'Ello everyone. I was just wondering if anyone else here does volunteer work.

Right now I do some work at the library, helping to organize events like an International Food Fair (it started 2 years ago as a multicultural fair, but everyone came for the food, so now its just food lol), and teaching small children (grade 1-3) how to read.

So what do you do?

You're all my charity cases. XD

We're all here to make you look good;).

@Everyone who doesn't volunteer: You should, don't forget that if you teach a child to read they won't drive their parents crazy. Actually, they still drive them crazy. Its fun driving people crazy. And if you give a homeless person a sandwich you give them a reason to smile.

You sure you don't want those cool points? *wafts cool points at screen* They suurrreee smell good. And yes the avy is in Victor Krum, he is the best character in the Harry Potter series. I think we should get back on topic, there have been a lot of locked threads recently.

Is it just me or is this thread quiet because people don't want to show their lack of brotherly love? ;)

@Everyone who doesn't volunteer: You should,

I take issue with anyone telling me what I should or should not do.

If I had to guess why this thread is quiet, it's because most people who DO volunteer or do charity work don't like to brag about it. Doing the volunteering/giving to charities should be it's own reward.

And anyone who doesn't probably doesn't want to be judged by you.

Best thing I heard someone say this month (at least). I applaud you.

I don't deserve that because I don't do charity work very oftn. Now that I think of it... I hardly even do it because I can't find a way to do it, and I don't have the time.

-10 cool points for proving me wrong in everything. +20 cool points for telling me what I did wrong, so I can correct it. ;)

Interesting, you dislike being judged but your assertion that Hallucination started this to brag is highly judgemental in itself.

Let me be the first one to praise Hallucination and the others here for their work. So what if he would like to share his experience with others. When people talk about about their volunteer work(unless theyve been forced to do it by school/court), its usually because they are *highly* passionate about the issue, or simply just community minded. Getting some recognition and praise from friends/family and peers is a healthy thing :)

Im actually doing part of my masters research project in conjunction with Amnesty International whom I used to volunteer for alot when I was in high school/uni. I'm lucky theyve taken me on board, but I guess my past with them contributed to that, so for that Im glad :)

Amnesty do some great work around the world to protect human rights across the globe - if you have a spare minute and care about human rights, check out that site - you too can help ! :D

and yes, any mod or staff member here is a volunteer, and we very rarely ever get any praise :violin: you all suck ! :p

ET never said he didn't like being judged himself. More that others might feel that way, and that's why the thread is quite. All ET said about himself was that he doesn't like Hallucination telling him what he should and should not do.

I also have to agree, some people are too busy trying to keep themselves and their families fed to be able to volunteer. Saying others should volunteer their time, when many are not capable of doing so, is cruel. Chances are a lot of people would like to volunteer but they can't. I'd also like to add the age restrictions for volunteer work that actually makes a difference, charities to help shelter homeless, battered wives, etc. You have to be 16 at the least, and that's only in a few states. Texas is (or at least was) 18 minimum to apply for a volunteer position.

So it's not just a case of people not volunteering, but rather they can't for many reasons and they don't need you (Hallucination) giving them a bunch of **** because of it.

lolz... interesting that a thread about benevolence can become tinged with ire! Only at LF !! AHTO is indeed becoming the next swamp..... where will I escape to next
that's only because we're getting all the ol' swampies migrating over here to Ahto. :p

anyways, to get back on subject, i've volunteered numerous times for Habitat for Humanity through my church. its great fun, and you actually get to go out and get away from the computer for once. :xp:

Who cares who started. It doesn't matter.

I don't see anything wrong with Hallucination saying :"@Everyone who doesn't volunteer: You should". He's not judging or insulting anyone anyone, he's merely making a suggestion. Volunteer work and helping other is generally a very satisfying experience. Anyways, time to get back on topic: "Do you volunteer?"

As for me, apart keeping you punks in line on the boards, I do volunteer occasionally for different organizations in various areas....from wrapping xmas gifts for an organization for handicapped children to paperwork to get financing/equipment for some schools in developping countries. It's always fun to help.

You people are taking this to a way different level. Volunteering is not bad or conservative (if anyone thinks that). It is progressive and a good deed that is required for the progress of the World.

We are not as perfect as you are, General.
