As long as it fits with the type of game and doesn't interfere with gameplay, I have no problem with advertising. Pepsi can fine in a sports game or in a game which is set in a modern city but not in KotOR or Oblivion.

As long as the advertised company, product, etc. could reasonably exist in the game's setting and story.

A Pepsi machine in New Mombasa: YES

Air Jordan's with +5 dinosaur kicking: NO

A Pepsi machine on Halo: NO

Kotor XI in New Mombasa: YES

Unless the ingame billboards and signs used to make an area seem more realistic have some sort of comic value I'd preffer true companies to fake ones, HummerH4 over MegatruckM4.

@samnmax, Right on, right on!

"If your erection lasts longer than four hours you should visit your padawan.":thmbup1:

@Venomtyrant, So what? It's believable in that reality. The soldiers who survive probably go home and play video games. :xp:

@Stoffe, Of course a corpse smasher would be appropriate...

"Death Metal kids love Pepsi! Support your local moshpit zombie-demons, drink Pepsi!":D

@Stinger, BRILLIANT!!! Now we just have to motivate Mac:lol:

Depends, really. For Sports games, I suppose it'll add more immersion and realism. On the other hand, advertising in most other other games might be distracting. However, real-world-based games will be just fine. Say, a game set ten years in the future - Pepsi wouldn't be so bad then, or say, McDonald's, etc.

On the other hand, they add some meaningless commercials during the game such as when loading/playing, that'll just distract and piss me off.

More news on this topic. Microsoft is poised to acquire Massive Inc., an in-game advertising comapny. I'd imagine rotating ads appearing in Xbox-Live! games where in-game posters, billboards etc. get updated from time to time. On the upside, the advertising could reduce the cost to play games online.

It's a must in sports games, to add realism. In other games, it's iffy.

It'd be funny to see a Coke vending machine on Taris or something. If they could creatively add an ad in, like, say on a billboard that is far away from an accessible area but still viewable, then it's ok. If it's blatant like on all of the loading screens, then no.
