Barry Bonds: Will everyone STFU about him!!

Recommended Posts

Now, the title says it all--though in all fairness, this thread kind of contradicts the point of it. ESPN needs to just STOP! with this whole Barry Bonds crap. Yeah, yeah, yeah, he took some steroids, we got it. They have a TV show devoted to him! I mean, at some point you have to say goodbye to ESPN. They just simply aren't what they used to be.

No baseball fan can honestly say that they don't care about this, but I think that it's just too much. He's probably the most disputed man in the country right now.

The Mets are doing better than the Yankees, yet no one knows because we all are focused on BB. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Giants fan and I hope he gets it; but at I think that they should just let him play like a normal person.

Anyone agree with me?

It'll die down once he gets past the magic 714, (and flare up again as he approaches the record), and then we can all get back to the real game. If he was a nicer guy the press _might_ go easier on him, but the steroid thing is always going to haunt him.

I'm just glad he didn't hit it against the Cubs a few days back. :)

Like I said, it'll calm down once he surpasses the no. 2 mark and Life will go on. We have such a short attention span for news. :)

Maybe if they would pitch to him like they're pitching to guys like Pujols he'd have hit #2 already and be on his way to #1. (No offense jimbofett66)

The game is definately changed since I was a kid idolizing guys like Kurt Gibson, Robin Yount, Reggie Jackson Nolan Ryan. Rod Carew taught me how to hit by watching and enjoying. There was no shortstop like the wizard of OZ!

Even though the Cards beat my Brewers in '82, I still respected them.

I wonder what kids of today will think of players now when they get my age.

And if you think Barry Bonds is so bad with steroids and whatnot, know that baseball has survived far worse than the whole steroid thing.
Wow, I didn't know all of that.

Probably this seems so bad because it is all public. Sounds like most of the scandals mentioned in that article weren't common knowledge while they were going on.

While I think Baseball would be better off without all the cheaters, I still think it's a great game and I'll always be a fan.

Sometimes I wonder what is going on inside Bonds's head. I wonder if he's ever contemplated admitting he took steroids, or if he's lied about it so much that he's even telling himself that he is right. He has never failed a drug test anyways...

None taken. I'm happy they pitch to him. Of course, that has something to do with the fact that he has Edmonds and Rolen following him in the lineup.

Quoted for emphasis! The '82 Brewers were a great team, too. Four future Hall of Famers: Robin Yount, Paul Molitor, Rollie Fingers, Don Sutton, along with Cecil Cooper, Jim Gantner, Gorman Thomas, Pete Vukovich. My Cardinals had to play great ball to win that Series.

Jim Edmonds is a monster and I've been following Scotty ever since he was in Philly. They should have paid that man his money. Best third baseman in baseball IMHO. Pujols will continue to see good pitches. That line-up is ridiculous. We'll see how my guys can handle them. :eyemouth:

Back to Bonds, I'll just be glad when he hits a couple of more so this will all die down. The negativity has made more out of some issues than needs to be.

There are so many other great stories we're all missing because of this coverage.

Bye-bye Babe, Hello Bonds, onward to Aaron. It is his destiny.

Umm.....the steroids seem to have worn off....no homers in like 10 games!

Oi! Will you now, that all this years he's been hitting homers....he technically wasn't cheating. There was no rules on players not being able to talk steroids till recently. You never know....even the greats could've tooken steroids and no one knows about it....

^Exactly! Who knows? Maybe Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, all of the greats took steroids (or had corked bats). We simply assume that they didn't. No one really (publicly, anyway) believed that Bonds took steroids before his 73 homer season. They may have figured that he could have but no real allegations were made.

And even if he did--does?--take steroids, they do nothing to a person's eyesight. Barry has some of the greatest eyes that the game has ever seen. Didn't he also set the record for walks in one season, the same season that he hit 73?

Even if you take away the steroids, you're still left with one amazing player.

Do you want to expound a bit on your opinion?
Sure.

Define farse.
"A ludicrous, empty show; a mockery."

In your opinion' date=' was it always? or is it because of a few players who found a way to cheat?[/quote']To me, this is the latest of many events to re-enforce my view, which I suppose I have held for some years now.

It's not a farce. There are too many honest and talented players in baseball today for it to be one.
But that's my point. I'm sure there are a lot of honest players today. Perhaps the vast majority. That is why this whole Bonds affair, like other events before it, spits in their face and makes a mockery of them, the sport, and the record book.

And if you think Barry Bonds is so bad with steroids and whatnot, know that baseball has survived far worse than the whole steroid thing.
But how does saying, "look at all of this other awful stuff" that has happened to baseball somehow make up for what is happening now or make the sport better?

Well, yeah. But I think it's wholly unfair to those honest players to generalize the whole sport as a farce. Sure, Bonds gets all the headlines, but he's only one man. When I think of baseball, I don't think of him. I think of those players who have built their reputations on their actions on the field, not off. Players like Albert Pujols, Alex Rodriguez, Vladimir Guerrero, Pedro Martinez, etc. It's people like them who make the game worthwhile. To have one's whole outlook on the sport predicated on the actions of one man is quite a disservice to those I mentioned before.

But how does saying, "look at all of this other awful stuff" that has happened to baseball somehow make up for what is happening now or make the sport better?

It doesn't make up for it or make it better, it merely shows that baseball has been through a lot and has persevered through it. If baseball were to give up just because someone cheated or took steroids or what, once again, it wouldn't be fair to those who do take the game seriously and succeed by playing by the rules.

I take it that news in the US is pretty much dead at the moment?

Then again, we got over a week on the death of Diana.

No, there's still news in the US, but this thread is about Bonds. Who's Diana?

On Topic: Baseball is too big of an entity to be dissmissed by the actions of a few people.

Has Barry Bonds ever tested positive for steroids?

That is a simple, straightforward question. The answer is NO.

Here in America, it's innocent until proven guilty. I think some of us have forgotten that.

  • 2 weeks later...
He hits #715!Congrats to him.

It is quite an amazing achievement.

I'm sorry he's not at 714 for awhile longer. As long as everyone was focusing on Bonds, they weren't talking about just how bad the Cubs have played in the last month. ;)
