Holiday props!

I just wanted to send a shout out to all my fellow swampies that work in retail at this moment. The busy season actually kicked off for me a few weeks back, and it has pushed my mind and body to the absolute limits. Starting tomorrow, we head into one of the busiest days of the year. Keep your heads on streight, and remember if you survive it, you survive anything. Whatever doesn't kill you, can only make you stronger. I've done retail for about 11 years going on 12, and I have been in some form of management for about half of that. The trick to getting through it is maintaining a sense of humor. Crack a joke once in a while, imagine that things could always be worse.

For all of you who do NOT work in retail, please give us a break over the next few months, and realize that we are human beings, not miracle workers, and NEVER judge our performance during the holidays, we are under an extreme amount of pressure.

And to all my swampies, have a Happy Thanksgiving, and a Happy Holidays!

Warmest regards,

The Groovester

Arg, so annoying when people get angry at us at the grocery store because the lines are so long, like it's our fault. "Lines are long because you're so slow." Nope, it's "Lines are long 'cause you're here!" :p

He actually has a good point. Nobody has any control of how many people decide to check out at once. People have all the time in the world to shop around, but when it comes to lines, suddenly they are in a hurry, or have a kid out in a car that is running. Today, don't expect to be anywhere without waiting in a line. We want nothing more than to get you checked out as soon as possible. Managers don't like lines either, because people get pissed and leave. Tomorrow I will be showing Christmas DVDs to all customers waiting in line. My experience is that it tends to calm people down who are waiting in lines, despite going against corporate directives. I will fight it every year and I usually win, because people often appreciate little things like that. They really do.

Don't worry, I read the comic strip. I can sorta guess what it's like.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm getting QUITE sick of people giving me **** because we are out of stuff. I can't produce a Wii for somebody and suddenly I am the Grinch that stold Christmas?! 12 days to Christmas, and my sales have been 3 times the normal number since late October....so yeah I am out of quite alot of stuff now... Stop assuming that we are just hording stuff in the back room for ourselves. As store managers, nothing makes us more happy than to sell every damn thing we have, and fast. Even if we were hording stuff in our back rooms, we are NOT hording it for ourselves, we are hording it because we are told to do so. Also when you call me 50-100 times a day for Nintendo Wii, realize that the conversation needs to stop at "no I don't have any". Pressing on and fishing for tips on our next shipment is futile. Most of the time, we don't know either, and even if we did, we don't want a mob scene in our store. Also, we are NOT holding any Wiis, we CANNOT hold any Wiis and WILL NOT hold any Wiis, so please stop trying to bribe and pester us to do so.

As much as I love you, Grooves, dramatically speaking, you were all that stood between me and my Wii. I harassed store managers every day. Eventually I landed the tip that snagged me my Wii.

Though, I was nice about it. I chatted for about 5 minutes with one manager about the craziness. (Two mothers came in looking for one while we were talking about it, heh.)

Just tell them it's only "three easy payments of $99.99!" Probably get rid of most of 'em, and if not, you'll make a nice little profit for yourself. ^^
