The Turok Series on N64. Played them for hours on end....from the age of 13-20. (turok dino hunter-turok evolution, and i beat them ALL including the legendary turok evolution, which ended up being the death of Acclaim Studios Austin) I still remember the screams and blood gurgles and my 13 year old mind going 'this is just too much...' and immediately after, pumping one of the Campaigner's thugs full of explosive shotgun shells...in slow motion.

Pong schmong. The first video arcade game ever released was Computer Space in 1971 by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney who would later (in 1972) found Atari.

The first home video game system followed in 1972 -The Magnavox Odyssey, which pre-dates Atari's Pong --The video arcade version of which was released in November of 1972, followed about 3 years later by their home video game version in 1975.

Matter of fact, Magnavox sued Atari since their home system already included a variant of Pong (which was where Bushnell got the idea in the first place), which ended in a settlement where Atari payed out $700,000 for the rights to liscense their version.

Erm, not that anyone but me probably cares, but there you have it. :D

But just reading this thread re-reminds me why really (even though I reluctantly answered Fallout) I can't actually pick a single favorite. Been far too many great ones over the last three decades. :)

What a great thread, it's always nice to take a brief trip down memory lane and recall the classics that got people hooked on gaming. In most cases, it's pretty easy to see how old people are by the era of game they chose. Well...time to date myself then ;)

Arcade: Dragon's Lair and Space Ace, too many quarters went to these games lol.

Console: Atari 2600 - Asteroids - I would play that game with my Dad for hours upon hours, the challenge being who could roll the score over without dying :). Also for the Atari - River Raid, Star Raiders (remember the numpad and the little plastic cover ;), and Yar's Revenge

Commodore 64/128: Ultima IV Quest of the Avatar, still the best in the series and the game that got me hooked on playing RPG's on the computer. Also, the first Deathmatch game I can recall, you played at one end and your buddy at his house played on the other end of the screen, the object was to get to the other end of the screen without getting killed by your buddy. Mom used to kill us for tying up the phone for so long with our 16 baud modems lol. For the life of me I can't remember the name of it, but I will never forget the game lol, lastly, Curse of the Azure Bonds.

PC - Panzer General, PG II, PAC GEN and the whole five star series by SSI - turned based strategy set in WWII, and, of course... Civilization

Honourable mention goes to the PS and Metal Gear Solid. I took a break from gaming for years and Metal Gear Solid was the game that got me back into gaming again.

I like Kitty can't limit myself to a all time favorite at least not prior to the Kotor series. I remember the good old days of Mario/Duck Hunt with so many hours logged on both that I could play Duck Hunt blindfolded shooting clay pigeons and never miss, or fall asleep after starting Mario Bros 1 and waking up having completed the game and was halfway through a 2nd playthrough with infinite lives.(It happened) When we got our 386 2 years prior to 98% of the household market and started playing PC games and got that first copy of DOOM I can't recall who spent more hours on that me or my dad I know I was faster at playing it. Then there was the Holy Grail that was "Myst" back to back with "X-COM 1 & 2". Around 2000 I was introduced late to the Fallout series of Fallout 1 & 2. Now the first games to see themselves installed on my computer after upgrades or crashes is the Kotor series, infact K1 has become my staple testgame if it doesn't run right after a crash then the computer is still broken.

Never heard of it...next! :p

Shame on you!

I can't believe nobody mentioned the magnificent Tie Fighter, the best space flight simulator ever made.

Hehe never thought someone else would remember the old Panzer Generals. Those games were so incredibly hard but so addictive at the same time.

Because I don't find that to be "old school" now a game like Pac Man or Asteroids or Pong is old school, Tie Fighter would be more of a recent game IMHO. But yes the game does rock! ;)

Of course this subject is relative to ones age... Darn I feel old! :(:xp:

I was 6 when it first came out

And people mentioned even more recent games like X-Wing Alliance. Even Chrono Trigger only is 11 years old.
