Det. Bart Lasiter
Has anyone here ever heard anything about the quality of ASUS' notebooks? My current one is dying (it's barely running now with my stripped down version of Server 2003 that has all of about 16 processes) and I checked of Newegg and found this notebook. The specs are all good (I'd defintely say it didn't have enough RAM if I were going to run Vista, but since I'm formatting it once I get my hands on it...), but I don't know anyone who's used an ASUS notebook and I haven't used one either. Any opinions?

Ray Jones
I'm ridin' a HP Pavillion Notebook with 2 GiB DDR2 RAM and a T5500 Core2Duo and nVidia GeForce 7400 Go 256 GiB (no share). I paid like €1000 for it (last year) and that's pretty much okay. Plus HP regularly supports Kernel.org with new, incredibly rockin' killer machines so it's a good thing to support them too. I'm feelin' veeeery comfortable with it *licks it* ^^
urluckyday
Alright. I have heard of these computers, and my friend has/had one, and it worked great. I recommend that if you are looking at this computer...get it...but add another gig of ram if you can. But for the price and the features...it looks great! Go for it! (dude...all I can say is Direct X10 support...that's all you need!)...

Astrotoy7
Ok. enough silliness. Asus boast the worlds first sideshow notebook.... sideshow is still being tinkered on but when more products come out and users get a handle on it - will take off in a big way. Sideshow is a Vista cpability that allows you to access stuff when a machine is off So in laptops - stuff like email notifications, access to music. With the Vista SDK its possible for clever coders to write their own sideshow gadgets(like widgets) that can be enable on these devices) In teh home theatre pc worlds, most of us are very excited about sideshow remotes tha will allow us to input recording shedules when the machine is in sleep or without exiting the interface on display. sideshow stuff is going to be huge IMO...watch this space In the context of laptops, they can be a great powersaving feature theres a vid from engadget, though the guy doesnt really know to much about it http://ces.engadget.com/2007/01/07/hands-on-video-of-asus-sideshow-laptop/ anyway, I dont really liek laptops... why = HOT TEMPS and NON CUSTOMISABLE... but if on pain of death I had to choose one.... it would be the Alienware aurora - the worlds first SLI notebook !!! Powered by AMD turion CPU and featuring a MOBILE 7950 Dual GPU !!! I have that in a desktop card and its larger than a dvdrw drive....making a mobile version was quite a feat for nvidia. easily the most kickass notebook in the world, until the DX10 mobile GPUs trickle out... I'd invest in a cooler pad though lolz mtfbwya
Jae Onasi
jmac, I'd still go for 2 GB ram if you can at all afford it, especially if you like to do 80 zillion things at one time like I do and have 800 windows or processes running simultaneously. I've got an HP dv9220 with 2 GB ram, 1.6G Centrino duo processor, and nvidia geforce go 7600 256 MB card. It also comes with Genuine! Windows Vista (like they'd advertise having fake windows products). I've played a couple games on it (JE, VtMB) with no problems at all. Right now I'm playing music, have the browser open with 6 tabs going, am doing an in-depth anti-virus scan, blogging, and have IRC on and Paint open with an image up. I think I heard my computer yawn. Astro--I finally got a lapdesk for mine. The laptop is nice and toasty on a cold night.

Det. Bart Lasiter
FYI, if anyone is considering getting the laptop I posted a link to before, or any laptop with a new Intel Santa Rosa chipset, you'll be stuck with Vista unless you want to slipstream drivers into an XP install or wait until the Linux kernel supports AHCI better than it does now. Q
Getting extra RAM for it shouldn't be a problem. Even laptop memory is uber-cheap right now. You should be able to find another GB for <$50.00.
Pho3nix
Why would you want a laptop? you could get a better PC for less money.
Jae Onasi
^^^ Playing Kotor in the following places a desktop could never go: 1. The van on a very long trip (yay for cigarette chargers!) 2. At work between patients or on lunch break 3. While sitting in the back row of a lecture hall of a continuing ed class taught by the most excruciatingly boring lecturer (not to mention I knew more about the subject than she did, and could have corrected the 2 mistakes she made) 4. In an airport terminal during a layover and during the flights themselves 5. In a hotel room the nights of various conferences. 6. Assorted other places only laptops could go
Astrotoy7
wow Jae, you seem to organise your life around KOTOR... when Im working in the field or on conferences, I mingle with the locals or party(sensibly or not) with colleagues... ie. something different to what I do at home. put the laptop down sista, and mingle ! mtfbwya
Det. Bart Lasiter
whats der prob? The BIOS is AHCI SATA mode only. No compatibility mode yet, though I have bitched directly to ASUS about this. Plus finding Linux drivers for my graphics card (8600 GS M) is a pain ;_;
Ray Jones
See, I said HP. ^^ Hm. Which Linux driver did you try? Which kernel?

Plus, an airport terminal is an airport terminal is an airport terminal, the only difference is the name of the town on the over-priced souvenirs. You can tell all us geeks, though--we've all found the electrical outlets in the lounges to plug our laptops into.
Det. Bart Lasiter
See, I said HP. ^^ Hm. Which Linux driver did you try? Which kernel? Latest stable version of the kernel, latest nVidia. The nVidia driver works in the sense that there's stuff on the screen that resembles the stuff that's supposed to be displayed. Meh, I'm probably going to have to use XP for school anyway. Ray Jones
Hm. You could give the -mm patchset at kernel.org a try, just in case you're somewhat bored and have no chick to dig on at hand. Then again, just go outside and enjoy the summer instead.
