Nute Gunray
And i am quite surprised at the amount of hooey, superstition, pretentiousness, and bad advice that permeates the golf world.. i need waders to sift through it all I can putt better with the ridiculously expensive Odyssey putter I want than the $30 no name one i have. There is no science that can explain that to me.
Keyan Farlander
I used to play golf with my dad when I was a little kid. I hated it so much. I got to be somewhat OK, I guess, and my miniature golf game has been excellent in recent years, so maybe I'l give real golf a shot again now that I'm an old man. edlib
Last time I held a golf club, I caused someone's head to bleed. (True story...) It was a combination accident/ me being a dumb-ass... but I've since been reluctant to lift another out of fear. Survived the show. Ugh. It was WAYYYYY more complicated than it ever should have been,.. seeing as there were no mics or monitors anywhere on stage. Just chairs, music stands, and musicians. But it was moving those combinations around between every song that got ugly and stupid. But we pulled it off (again!) and look like the super-amazing geniuses we are (again!) Tomorrow night's concert is also an orchestra... but we have a play on stage in the morning... so we can't leave anything set up overnight again. Incredible planning on somebody's part. K_Kinnison
I can putt better with the ridiculously expensive Odyssey putter I want than the $30 no name one i have. There is no science that can explain that to me. Are you saying that you are unable to understand science? or is it more about confidance in hitting well with an expensive putter, over an inexpensive one? Or blaming the equipment instead of yourself? About as the same as people thinking a more expensive wine tastes better. I find it funny that I was able to shoot near 80% at curling with a cheap slip on slider, and then have people thinking they needed to buy $300 curling shoes to improve their accuracy
Zargon
I think hes saying a putter should be a putter and some more expensive wine does taste better, same with beer and tequila, scotch, whiskey...gin...etc etc etc etc
edlib
With very few notable exceptions, the same generally holds true for guitars, amps, and pro-audio equipment. The costlier it is, the better it sounds.

There was an actual study that found out people thought wine tasted better if it was more expensive... even tho it wasn't expensive, nor a quality wine
edlib
Psychology plays a big part. So does snob appeal. But the other side (at least in relation to music-related electronics, anyway...) is that superior craftsmanship and higher quality parts with better specs do cost more. I never drink... so the relative qualities of wine mean little to nothing to me. Work was easy. I probably shouldn't even have bothered going in... though I did get a good lunch out of it, AND I ran into an old friend on the subway. I'll probably take Friday off instead. (Gotta finish getting the cellar ready for the work next week.) Walked a pretty good distance home. It was the perfect evening out there. Actually made me feel good to be alive. If there's a paradise in the afterlife (if there's even an afterlife, that is...) I imagine it will always be a warm late spring evening, shortly before the sun goes down, when everything is in bloom, but there are no bugs flying around to harsh the vibe. That exactly what the priest at my parish said in his sermon last Sunday, (although he has no doubts about its existence, of course). On the subject of wine, I find that you can get a really nice bottle of wine for not that much money if you know what you're doing. As the price gets really expensive, I can't tell a difference in quality any more. I think you'd have to be an experienced wine guy with a really developed taste to pick out the differences at that point. Me, I just drink the stuff. K_Kinnison
Personally, I know what kind of wines I like. The spicy/tannis flavor of merlots I don't like, and I only drink rieslings or sweet wines if I have a lady over (so far the bottle has been sitting in my fridge for almost 6 months) but generally i like pinot noirs or Chardoney's. each wine has its only flavors and the good ones can be very distinct to the regions it comes from. The problem is, it takes a well trained sense of taste to really decern good quality wines. Most people are just as happy with a five buck chuck that tastes like grape juice or church wine. and have no clue what is the difference between Tucany and Napa Valley wines

edlib
Fall is nice too... but I was in a particularly sunny mood when I came in last night,.. so that's all I could see. Walked to the station this AM. Got a nasty blister out of it. Didn't extend the walk any farther. Spent the day putting on a party for our student work-study crew. Good times! Pizza. Soda. Snacks. Wii Sports up on the big screen. Cloverfield DVD playing on the TV in the corner. Good tunes blasting through the PA. Ate seafood on the beach with a friend for supper. Then blasted through a couple of levels of Gears of War when I got home. What else could you want from a day? Steve Winwood tomorrow. Should be great... except I've already had everybody and their cousin's best friend asking me to see if I can get them in to see it. Could be a bit of a long day too... but doesn't look too bad at the moment. They are fully equipped and self-contained. All I should have to do is point them to where the set up thier boards, and tie them into our speakers, and then sit back and relax, and enjoy the concert. Well.. that's the plan, anyway... Keyan Farlander
So I recorded a piano piece I have been working on. Took me like a hundred takes to get it just the way I wanted it. I recorded it with the built-in recording feature of my digital piano, so I could transfer it to my laptop later. When I tried to do it, there was some digital clipping. No problem. Just reduce the output from the digital piano. Except...you can't. There is no way to do that. I looked in the manual, and it said you have to reduce the input level on your recording divice. Except...you can't do that either. I looked in that manual, and it said you have to reduce the output level from the instrument. So apparently the only way to solve this problem is to record it again and play softer. I hate technology. I hate it so very, very much.
edlib
I feel you. My entire career is based around troubleshooting situations exactly like that. However: That's really the easy part. All the psychology that comes into play when dealing with musicians on stage having issues like this, who simply don't and will never trust me to know what the hell I am doing because I am just a "sound-guy" despite the fact that in many cases I have been dealing with this stuff since long before they were actually born... that's where it gets tricky. It's the end of the school year, and I am burnt-out to the point of feeling deep-fried. Does it show at all? Sorry... just spent the morning responding to a particularly outrageous e-mail that came through from the leader of a department complaining about our work. His department puts on 3 weeks of concerts. 7 days a week. All day (12+ hours a day in many cases.) In every available room on campus. Easily 20 or more shows a day for the better part of a month. (And this is only a small fraction of the shows they really want to do! They keep asking for more slots to fill...) A couple of these didn't go perfectly. He tried to use this to show how very incompetent our staff was. Didn't matter to him that many of the musicians were totally unprepared, uncooperative, or didn't provide us with any information. If we really knew what we were doing, that shouldn't matter... He also described some of our staff as being "rude and disrespectful to the players..." "Frustrated and tired" is how I personally would have phrased it. But we are apparently expected to work all day without any kind of a real break while being mostly ignored (or in some cases, actually sneered at...) by the "artists"... and somehow manage stay chipper the entire time. ... There are simply no words...

edlib
Yes. That is true. But for the time being, I have to be the politician,.. and put my side of the debate in logical, reasonable terms, and not get overly hostile or emotional about it... no matter how much I would like to at the moment. Nute Gunray
Sometimes I think things like "ok so I assume there will be football in heaven. But would my team always win? I mean I get really angry when they lose and that's never good. Plus I can't see 'getting angry because of sports' being something that goes down in heaven. But if your team always wins it would get boring. And that ruins 'paradise.'"
edlib
Work wasn't horrible. Wasn't great either. Music was good. Road crew was cool. But someone from our end dropped the ball and made those of us working the show look bad, making my day longer and more stressful than it needed to be,.. and that pissed me off. (And I was already in a fine, fine mood from dealing with that email this morning...) Could have lived without that. Oh well... time off now. Yay. Maybe I'll stop hating my co-workers and wishing people dead by the end of 3 days off... Maybe...
