elTee
If you read the recent interview (can't find link) with Ron, you'd probably share my opinion that Ron probably wouldn't want to make MI5. He wants to buy the rights and make his version of MI3. But he can't.

Scummbuddy
I would love to know why you two think that Ron sucks? Would it be for all the great games that have come from his companies? Would it be for him doing what he wants? You know what? You Suck. (ala Billy Madison)
TheKiller
Personally I would really like to see the original idea he had for MI3 made into a game...
manny_c444
I really like MI3 as it was--I thought it was funnier than the first two. Ron is the man.
Jake
I think Ron Gilbert is awesome (creating Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion and whatnot), but I think its a little silly to say "Ron should come back and therefore Monkey Island games would be good." ... What's probably the best things about the Monkey Island games? The writing (jokes and story), and the atmosphere (art and music). Not just Ron wrote the game. Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman were co-writers. And Tim Schafer was credited by Gilbert in one of the Scummbar interviews as writing "the funniest parts." Also, Peter Chan (I think for MI1, definitely for 2?) and Steve Purcell had massive contributions by means of the backgrounds and character design. Also the 3 music guys, Michael Land, Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian etc etc Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah same old same old... Anyway, just saying "they need Ron!" is silly. While it would be nice if the whole team could just come back ... that will never happen. What LucasArts really needs for Monkey 5 is any group of people who just "get it," and care a whole lot about the game they're making. That seemed to be missing from EMI. Also they need money for Monkey 5, another thing that was lacking from EMI.

manny_c444
If Lucas Arts could score a license with Calvin and Hobbes I'd prefer a C&H game over a MI game anyday...think of the possibilities................................................
sultan12
lol, dream on, Bill Watterson has said that he will never license Calvin and Hobbes for anything. That is why you see no C&H mugs, or t-shirts or anything. He is a very convicted man, you try to convince him to sell the rights, just try it! manny_c444
I bet if Bill Watterson played through Grim Fandango he'd license it to an adventure game. I could also threaten him into submission......

Ben Whatsisname
What they need is to keep just the programmers and graphics artists on the project and bring in the original team (via contracting) to write/oversee the game. That way we don't wind up with more craptastic plot holes, gripes comparing mi5 to mi1, or fans "orphaning" it like they did with CMI. I, for one, include CMI in the "trilogy", but exclude EMI. EMI was fun and all, but it should have been titled something else with the subtitle of "Based on the characters from the Monkey Island trilogy", imho. manny_c444
That would be a good idea....but those ex-Lucasarts guys all seem pretty bitter and probably wouldn't want to get back together now that the7y run there own game companies. (everyone from the original is working somewhere else, I think). What about Purcell does he work at Lucasarts anymore?
Ben Whatsisname
I know the most of original team is bitter and/or involved with their own companies. The thread is called "What LucasArts really Needs" though... Not "What LucasArts really could do for MI5 if all parties agreed" Hehehehe... You gotta admit, for Monkey 5 to live up to what die-had fans want, my suggestion is truly what LucasArts needs! LOL
elTee
I also think of MI as a trilogy, really. EMI doesn't fit in - mainly the whole Herman Toothrot thing. At the time I thought that they hadn't played the first two games, 'cos that'd explain how it doesn't work. Then I thought, maybe they assume that everyone has only played CMI... as it wasn't called 'Monkey Island 3' or anything some people might not have known of the other two games.
