Scummbuddy
Anyone else think it's kinda eerie that the last update on infinite-machine.com was the day before September 11th last year. Yea, I know the company doesn't exist anymore, but when they were around, didn't they want to tell more about their game New Legends? Where was their company located anyways? Swordmaster
I think it's just a stupid coincidence. Everything in the world is not connected to what happened a year ago, even though the U.S. media tries to prove otherwise.
elTee
I thought this post was about Ireland.
The Adventurer
You want to know whats even more eery? On Wed (9-11-02) the pick 3 numbers for the New York Lotto was (9-1-1) Creepy.
Remi
Kinda eerie, but they said the odds of it happening was 1 in a 1000, so it's really not THAT strange.
Scummbuddy
Yea, I saw that lotto on the news, and come on that is very weird. They said that they had to stop people from selecting those numbers because so many were choosing it. I'd hate to be that girl that pushed the button to get those numbers. I'd probably just cry or something. Maybe something more manly.
Gabez
Numerologies are all around us. Look at a simple street kiosk. The length of a typical kiosk is one hundred and forty nine centimeters – in other words, one hundred billionth of the distance between the earth and the sun. The height of the rear, one hundred and seventy-six centimeters, divided by the width of the window, fifty-six centimeters, is 3.14. The height at the front is nineteen decimeters, equal, in other words, to the number of years in the Greek lunar cycle. The sum of the heights of the two front corners and the two rear corners is one hundred and ninety times two plus one hundred and seventy six times two, which equals seven hundred and thirty-two, the date of the victory of Poitiers. The thickness of the counter is 3.10 centimeters, and the width of the cornice is 8.8 centimeters. Replacing the numbers before the decimals by the corresponding letters of the alphabet, we obtain C for ten and H for eight, or C10 H8, which is the formula for naphthalene. Those measurements were taken by Jean-Pierre Adam. My point is that you can find mystic “coincidences” from anything, and that the universe is a great symphony of numerical correspondences. scabb
So wait...people WEREN'T allowed to choose those numbers....and they came up? The rollover is never -double- the previous weeks non-winner... Although that is speculation based on a vague comment. Ih. In 50 years time, you never know. Aeroplanes will probably be strapped to fireworks, and people will be burning Bin Laden in a bonfire. Remember Remember Septermber 11.
Remi
They were allowed to choose the numbers, but there's a limit of 5000 per combination.
elTee
The biggest coincedince is that the moon is just the right size to competely block out the sun during an eclipse. Basically, the moon is something like an nth smaller than the sun, but is so far away that from earth they both look exactly the same size. But really odd things happen all the time. I mean, there's a random button on my calculator. It makes a 3 number decimal, like 0.123. One boring maths lecture I said to my friend "I wonder if it does '0.000'" and pressed the random button. It came up with 0.000. Another time, my friend turned on his video camera because he thought it was broken, and was playing around with it. He pointed it out the window and a bird flew into the window, so he caught it on tape. It had never happened before, so what where the odds that the one time it does he films it? But theres always this analogy: "A fly sits on the minute hand of a clock. Every time the hand points directly upwards, the clock makes a chime. The fly mistakenly assumes that this is a miraculous coincidence." We know that the clock is chiming to let you know it is the hour, and not a coincidence. Spooky... The wierdest set of coincidences I came across is the Abraham Lincoln / JFK one. Maybe I'll post a link sometime, or one of you lot can.
scabb
It just goes to show, that nobody has a clue what "This" is. "This" being everything. To believe that everything can be explained by Science is a very narrow minded view on things, as there are many things that defy explanation. Or is it that this is all just an illusion? That 'you' are the only thing there is. Everything else is an illusion that either you or some hilarious God created. The coincidences are just clues. This would be true if you deny that quantum mechanics is a true science. Paths are opening that will allow us to break out of our circle of limited awareness. Consciousness is totally beyond space-time--what may in essence be the real "I." We have come to know that consciousness and energy are one; that all space-time is constructed by consciousness; that our normal perception of reality is a composite of an indefinite number of universes in which we coexist; and that what we perceive as ourselves is only a localized projection of totality of our true selves. therefore our energies are devoted to the study of consciousness. there is no other task. -- Dr. Fred Wolf, PhD in physics. http://www.transpersonal-web.com/wolf.shtml http://www.stardrive.org/fred.shtml http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/2606/wolf.htm http://pw1.netcom.com/~fawolf/ In essence, quantum physics tells us that it is our minds that make reality. This allows for a collective energy that would make those lottery numbers come into existence. Quantum mechanics shows us that it isn't mind over matter ... it is mind = matter. If you gather enough people in a room with a table and get them to believe that the table doesn't exist, that table would not only disappear ... it would NEVER have existed in the first place. It is not at all hard to see how the numbers "911" came up in the lottery. The bush administration has worked hard to keep those numbers in our heads out of fear. The collective minds of a lot of frightened people made those numbers come up so--according to the precepts of the quantum. Of course, there has never been a valid theory that unifies quantum physics with general relativity, so you might make the argument that it is not TRUE science. But if it were a phony science, there would not be so many physicists that make the attempt to incorperate it into the science we've accepted. Reality is more than you are taught in grammer and high school. scabb
Quantum Mechanics is possible, but it's still just as valid as any other theory, including any theory that anyone decides to create. Nothing can be proven, and even if you believe something is proof, arguments can always be made against it. Quantum Mechanics perhaps brings in a 'fourth dimension' to reality, so to speak, but what about the fifth dimension? The sixth? etc. It's all a very complicated argument that can never, ever, EVER, be settled, and involves a lot of typing.

scabb
Sultan: Shut up. The coincidences are interesting. You always pop up on threads, sprinkling them with your unwanted cynicism and sarcasm, and it's starting to wear a bit thin. You should try to be a little less argumentitive, what do you have to prove? Intelligence does not come in the form of sarcasm.
sultan12
Yeah, I never detected sarcasm in games like Monkey Island or DOTT, it has no place in this forum. Also, like you scabb, I come on here to flaunt my intelligence, cause I'm so gosh darn smart and I need others to tell me so!
Alien426
Ho now, mates! Don't make me spill this grog of mine. Thar be plenty room for both of yee on this here vessel. Sultan, the sort of humor that be used in the games does not justfify or even encourage you to use the same on this ship. I don't care for mystical forces that be formin' numbers in the lottery or kiosks. It's a mighty heap of rubbish if you be askin' me. Arrr! Drunken_Sailor
raVen - thanx for all the info, especially the links. I liked the ones on star - drives. I wouldn't disparage Quantum theory or deny that it may be a true science. My point is that at present, it seems more of a mathematical than a physical science. And as such, other than a possible application to computer technology, it offers little in the way of practical value at this time. Moreover, invoking it in the context of psychology or philosophy is an epistomological stretch of imagination to say the least. You wrote : Originally posted by raVen_image In essence, quantum physics tells us that it is our minds that make reality. If you gather enough people in a room with a table and get them to believe that the table doesn't exist, that table would not only disappear ... it would NEVER have existed in the first place. I disagree entirely. This is mystical nonsense. No tables, or anything else for that matter, exist simply in the minds of people. If what you perceive does not exist, then you are not perceiving --- you are hallucinating. "Our minds make Reality" was a drug culture concept championed years ago by advocates of LSD who believed it would expand their consciousness. Many of them died in their dreamworlds. If a bunch of people delude themselves into believing a flight of stairs exists leading out the window of a tall building and then attempt to walk down it, objective Reality will prove itself nicely when they hit the pavement below. Similarly, "collective consciousness" is a myth propagated by spiritualists and other charlatans who pretend illusions are real. "Believing" doesn't make it so. Because people believed for thousands of years in the Geocentric model of the heavens, did that mean the Sun really moved around the Earth? The molecules for human life were manufactured in stellar fusion cycles long ago, so we are essentially made of "star stuff." As a philosophical concept, I offer these words from the late great Dr. Carl Sagan --- " WE ARE THE MEANS BY WHICH THE UNIVERSE CAN KNOW ITSELF " In a sense, objective reality has evolved a mechanism for intelligence and self discovery. So the Universe has created Consciousness --- not the other way around.
