whats the meaning of it all?

Right, so I was watching Angel Sanctuary (which happens to be a very good anime) and I was struck with the thought that the general consensus of what America thinks anime is is Pokemon and Sailor Moon. Both animes I enjoy watching, but arent half as enthralling as Rurouni Kenshin for instance. Most anime I've come across has at least a bit of philosophy that the show is built on, most have a great deal of it. Chobits centers around mans obsessive interactions with technology and how perhapes someday A.I. technology will become more desireable than human contact. Gundam Wing: The stress and thin alliances quickly broken in war; Kenshin: the devestation of war on the human spirit, and its ability to continue; Neon Genasis Evangelion: has way too much going on to explain.

*Gets kicked by annoyed people*Sorry. The point? Americans whine about Anime being for kids and call us immature for watching it. But look at the American films: They are mostly either slaptick comedy, cheesy romance or blowing sh...tuff up. Wheres the meaning? I'm trying to compose a list of movies that have a philosophical basis.

So far I've got:

Star Wars

Lord of the Rings (Which isnt by any means American, but its popular here...)

Being John Malckovich

Stigmata

Gattaca

Harrison Bergeron (Which was actually based on a short story by Curt Vonnegut)

Matrix

Dogma

Dr. Strangelove

and Fight Club (Which is pretty rudimentary)

Can you think of any others? Beyond the cliched good vs. bad...

A-ha! You decided to post it! Kewl :D

I think I'd add Bladerunner (:p:D) to your list :)

Why don't we make a list of recommended anime watching? It seems like it'd go hand in hand with the intent of this thread... ^_^

I don't know anything about anime.

But as for movies with a philosophy behind them... To this list I would have to add:

2001: A Space Odyssey

Full Metal Jacket

Dr. Strangelove

A Clockwork Orange

Apocalypse Now

Platoon

The Fisher King

12 Monkeys

Brazil (hell, any movie by Terry Gilliam...)

Taxi Driver

Schindler's List

Amistad

Saving Private Ryan

Magnolia

American History X

Traffic

The Contender

The Deer Hunter

The Godfather (I and II)

Chinatown

October Sky

The Shawshank Redemption

American Beauty

Changing Lanes

A Simple Plan

I'm sure there are many more that I'm not thinking of right now.

Have to agree with Skate Boy, I hate anime, but most American movies suck.

Minority Report was good tho.

Back on topic, I think the reason people look down on anime is because most American cartoons are made for young children. They assume it must be the same everywhere else, too...

"anime" like Dragonball Z doesn;t help much either.

that, and they censor everything out of them Cowboy Bebop was this edited, even though it was in "adult swim" on cartoon network. DBZ is HEAVELY Edited. Escaflowne was RIPPED TO SHREADS. cut entire episodes out of the running.

No, america is NOT ready for Anime. they probably never will be.

Outlaw Star, quite edited

how ever Cartoon network said that episode 23(?) (hot springs of planet turgi(?))that it didnt have much important plot to it, how ever it did explain why caster shells were created. HELLO!?

dont you see the big blunder in that one?

The only anime I've ever really seen (aside from if my little cousin is watching digimon or something) is Princess Mononoke and it was pretty good.

A good real life movie I've seen though is Donnie Darko.

That pretty much describes my feelings. Although I am opening up to it.....a little bit.

Anime is very strange, it gives you a wonderful, foriegn feeling.

Watch an untranslated ending theme and think about it, you'll understand. The Core of Anime is something wonderful I know.

Leemu, watch the series Neon Genesis Evangelion, or the movie Ghost in the Shell. Great anime right there. nothing that they'd show on the networks State side.

What they said ^__^

@Leemu: You shall be sucked into the world of [proper] anime, whether you like it or not - I'll make sure of that :p:D :D

NGE rules. Nadesico too.

And yeah.. Any Kubrick movie would fit perfectly on Wasserla's list. Especially 2001.

2001 is, and always will be one of my favorite movies. I did my English thesis on it's allegorical meaning. I watch it at least once a month.

It's not that the US is not ready for anime... it's just that some of these companies that acquire the animes SUCK!

I mean the only really good companies I can think of would probably be ADVision and Manga... a lot of the others don't do translations, they do a freakin cut n paste job and hope for the best.

(I just got Death and Rebirth and the End of Evangelion, see the End of Evangelion or die an incomplete Eva fan) :D

oh! oh! oh!! Isnt death and rebirth cool!? Rule #1: Any anime seen on cartoon network is not anime. Its a cut 'n paste job (as lynk said) And certainly there are anime for kids (Not LA Blue Girl. Oi! ^^;). You have to go out and rent the dvd's or Dl a fan-subbed version to realy know whats going on.

I used to sell bootlegs of a fansubbed EoE. Made a healthy profit too, then Rogers came to town and gave my target group high-speed internet. Then it all went to hell when they released the DVD.
