I try to contribute to the conversation while having to put up w/ Black's smartass comments...

I havn't seen you contribute anything on this page other than complaints towards BlackDove's posts and an "I agree" post, which as most people know, I don't heartily enjoy seeing around here. What I've wondered is, if Jesus died for our sins, meaning that we can be forgiven for them, does that mean that everyone who sinned before Jesus died was sent to hell, no questions asked? They couldn't be forgiven?

Because, if you say no to that, and say that they could be forgiven, then jesus' death was for no reason at all, as nothing would have changed from then til now. Or are we forgiven of a greater amount of sins now that he's dead?

I'm really not clear on how this whole 'died for our sins' thing worked. Someone wanna straighten me out?

The way that i've always believed it, is that before jesus, any man who did not follow God was sent to hell when they died, but after he died, it gives us purgatory as someone mentioned.

And i believe that every person when they die is given a chance to stand before God and get judged on how they lived their lives. And if they lived a good life, and were kind people, then God will allow them to live with him in his house. :D

So it doesn't matter at all whether they believed in him during their lives?

Anyway, it's a pretty rubbish deal. I could make up a better religion on the spot, which ensured anyone would go to heaven.

PS: What about my take on the Genesis? Do you find it appealing? And the part about interpreting the Bible yourself?

Well, if you believe in God your entire life you don't have to goto purgatory. and there are a LOT of souls that go to purgatory, because a lot of people don't believe in God, and so you could get stuck there a long time....which makes believing in God much better IMO.

But i do agree about interpreting genesis for yourself...and deciding what it really means to you. If you want to believe he made the earth and everything on it in 7 days, then you can. I personally think that since God is immortal, a day to him could be 250 million years to us.

Yeah guys... blackdove, lose the nasty humor. It's funny to begin with, but it can get old... Break, dont let yourself get riled up so easily...

I hate the idea that anyone would take old or new testament as literal historical fact.... but I know people do it, and thats pretty durn sad....

I see.

Read this. Thoroughly.

Read every subsection. Read every last paragraph of it. Gorge yourself on every little letter and punctuation.

If you still take the Bible as fact, after doing exactly this, you're free to go - with a label on your back. Don't worry, you'll never be able to read the label yourself, but everyone will easily spot it.

So then how would you respond to this earlier post by me which states the fact that the Bible hasn't always been the Bible?

Also do not forget that the Bible as we know it today is not how it has always been in the past. I forgot what the "convention" was called but many of the most versed/read scholars on the Bible got together and voted on what the Bible should be comprised up of. They then looked at all the available books and voted them in or out. Some books were not included due to religious inaccuracies or that it didn't contribute anything spiritually. Such examples of books that people used to believe were part of the Bible were the Books of Maccabees, Books of Esdras, Tobit, Ecclesciasticus or The Wisdom of Jesus Son of Sirach, Baruch, Daniel, Bel, and the Snake, and The Prayer of Manasseh are just a few books not to make it in to the current 66 chapter Bible. This is all just food for thought and there is more I could say but I do not want to take up a whole page on a thread to say it.

So in conclusion is the Bible really the true Bible? Sure most Christians believe that God used men to write books of the Bible but did he also use that convention of men to put the True works in and keep the UnGodWrtitten (<-- Stupid Moment) ones out.

So this could also mean that the Bible used to have the entire OT without Ruth Amos, Malachi, and lets say Ecclesiastes but had in it the books The Prayer of Azaraiah and The Song of the Three and Baruch in its place. Would you still accept this as God's word even though more intelligent and learned scholars before you denied them a place in The Good Book (I am assuming you are not as learned as they. Heck you could be the Pope himself for all I know).

Just curious.

I am a Christian, I was Baptized in a Baptist church when I was 13. For the moment, I don't belong to a church, because I have little time to commit, but If I had to choose, I suppose you could say i'm for the New Life Churches. And for the record, I enjoy New Life Services.

Also... Threads like these don't turn into wars until somebody comes in and says something that contridicts everything that everyone else has already said. ;)

I've said it before.. and I'll say it again....

man I love being a turtle ;)

Nah, the fact of the matter is....

IF us atheists are RIGHT, when we die, we wont know

If we're wrong, we'll know about it, and life a fiery painful eternity.

If christians are right, they live in happyness and crap with their 'god'

If they're wrong, and there is no god, then they never know.

So athiests, unfortunetly get the short straw.... but I suppose die-hard cruel atheists can make up for it by laughing at christians for their whole life, thinking how stupid they are to believe in a higher power.

Me, I'm an atheist... I'd like to think there's something bigger out there waiting for us.... but it just doesn't seem feasible in this world bound by rules of physics.
