One of the best features of Star wars is the lightsabers, especially the duels. But which i your favourite and why? My fav is Yoda v Dooku. Seeing a strange green gnome leap around a seventy year old weilding a small green einstein defying saber of light has never been quite so fun.

PS. If I havent included a duel just mention it in your post.

My favorite duel would have to be the one with Qui-Gonn Jinn & Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Maul. I think that it was one of the most intese duels with out using CGI and it was also very action packed. Duel of the Fates playing while they were dueling was also very good as well.

I have to go with Episode 6: Return of the Jedi Luke vs. Darth Vader saber duel.

VADER: "You cannot hide forever, Luke."

LUKE: "I will not fight you."

VADER: "Give yourself to the dark side. It is the only way you can save your friends. Yes, your thoughts betray you. Your feelings for them are strong. Especially for . . . "

Vader stops and senses something. Luke shuts his eyes tightly, in anguish.

VADER: "Sister! So . . . you have a twin sister. Your feelings have now betrayed her, too. Obi-Wan was wise to hide her from me. Now his failure is complete. If you will not turn to the dark side, then perhaps she will."

Luke ignites his lightsaber and screams in anger.

LUKE: "NOOOOO!"

Luke rushes at his father with a frenzy we have not seen before. Sparks fly as Luke and Vader fight in the cramped area.

Luke's hatred forces Vader to retreat out of the low area and across a bridge overlooking a vast elevator shaft. Each stroke of Luke's sword drives his father further toward defeat.

The Dark Lord is knocked to his knees, and as he raises his sword to block another onslaught, Luke slashes Vader's right

hand off at the wrist, causing metal and electronic parts to fly from the mechanical stump. Vader's sword clatters uselessly away, over the edge of the platform and into the bottomless shaft below. Luke moves over Vader and holds the blade of his sword to the Dark Lord's throat.

Now that's drama! This scene just gives me chills with John William's final duel theme playing in the background, the sabers clashing and sparking, the rage in Luke's face as he swings and SWINGS and SWINGS until Vader's hand goes flying and Luke stands there realizing how close he came...

GAWD, that's just awesome! :D

Man, the Luke/Vader fight in Bespin is just incredible, and unbeatable in my opinion. You could actually feel the incredible Darkness pouring from vader, and the futility that Luke felt. And when Vader had his saber pointed right at lukes face ("you are beaten"), You can actually FEEL how deadly those things are. All in all, a great battle.

OK, I've come to a conclusion:

They are all brilliant, each one containing something unique and spectacular. However, to put them into some kind of order...

1: Anakin Skywalker versus Count Dooku.

2: Yoda versus Count Dooku.

3: Luke Skywalker versus Darth Vader (Episode V).

4: Obi-Wan Kenobi versus Count Dooku.

5: Luke Skywalker versus Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine.

6: Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi versus Darth Maul.

7: Obi-Wan Kenobi versus Darth Vader.

As I say, this was very difficult, and each one comes so close to the others. It was meerly based on classic quotes (like "I am your father!"), lightsaber skills and swordsmanship, computer graphic techniques and impressiveness.

the duel of the fates music and seeing awesome jedi moves and stuff.....hey!!!!!! wait a minute....where's the Qui-gon vs Darth Maul on tatooine!!! that's my favorite since it's the first lightsaber battle that takes place outdoors. (other than in esb, but that's not on a planet) i have to say the final duel in tpm was the best lightsaber battle EVER. it was the first time i saw a real saber battle on the big screen (my parents wouldn't take me to see esb or rotj :( )

I voted for the TPM duel of Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon vs Darth Maul because it is beautifully orchestrated and stunted. Visually awesome. :)

Off course nothing compares to the RoTJ duel Luke vs Vader, while not as visually stunning it has that deep emotional and psyhcological battle and impact. :)

I gather they're all pretty awesome in their own way. :)

Question:

What's the music got to do with how good a lightsaber duel is? Surely it's the skill, technique and power displayed by the Sith / Jedi that counts? Well, I wouldn't know what the music is doing in any of the lightsaber fights anyway, so maybe that's why I find it hard to believe that everyone is voting for Darth Maul versus the Jedi just because of the soundtrack.

I, too, forgot about the duel between Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul in the Dune Sea. It was very short, though, and all that sand clouded my vision. Still, it's a lightsaber duel, and they are all fantastic.

it's not just the soundtrack, it's the acrobatics and stunts that were used, in the OT you don't see someone fall 30 feet and then force jump onto a catwalk, use force speed, and watch his master get killed and then go on an all-out saber-assault and get force pushed over an edge, force jump out of it, force grab lightsaber, slash bad ass in half! :D

The music doe do a lot. For example Qui-Gon vs Maul in Tatooine, last less than a min as is Vader's Luke final scene. But the music in them is so powerful that they seem greater.

I cannot decide, really.

I'm sad that the Final battle in TPM has messed up music :( But duel of the fates is powerfull too. (the alternate version of it very even better)

Granted, the duel between Darth Maul and the Jedi was quite good, however we still had not been introduced to someone bringing the ceiling down on a two-foot dwarf, Force Lightning being deflected around a room causing massive explosions, a combatant using two lightsabers in combat, an opponent being disabled with something different than having your arm chopped off (Anakin by the Force Lightning and then Obi-Wan), Yoda in lightsaber combat, using flips, jumps and sommersaults to his advantage, a Dark Lord defeating two Jedi before holding his own against a third, complete darkness while Count Dooku and Anakin Skywalker duel, casting eerie red and blue glows across their faces, throwing objects using the Force and seeing what happens when they don't strike their target and the best conclusion to a duel ever: a massive pillar being ripped from the floor and thrown onto a pair of defeated Jedi, a jump into the best ever Star Wars spaceship and Yoda's expression while saving Obi-Wan and Anakin.

The only amazingly new thing for the duel from Episode I - The Phantom Menace was Darth Maul's double-bladed lightsaber, but even that wore off at the third time of watching. Fair enough, Darth Maul was a great Sith Lord, and his death (being chopped in half and falling to his doom) was rather spectacular, but, in all fairness, the duel from Episode II - Attack of the Clones was much better, for all the reasons I stated above.
