Pirates of the Caribbean

Remi

Recommended Posts

Anybody checked it out yet? I dragged my wife to see it this afternoon ("It has ghosts?!" "It has SWORDFIGHTS?!!") and I found it quite decent. They re-created a lot of the scenes from the ride, which I admittedly only have seen pictures of, which were very cool. Also a lot of Monkey Island-ish stuff in there like ghost-ly pirate kidnapping governor's daughter, cursed jewelry, and almost "I am rubber you are glue" with "Sticks and stones can break my bones". All in all a decent action flick, with a few laughs.

It has been getting surprisingly (well, surprising to me anyway...) good reviews all around.

Looks like fun, although I don't forsee seeing it in the theaters. Seems more like a DVD rental flick to me.

I don't see much in the theaters anyway... I was an usher at the local Mega-Cineplex all the way through high-school,.. and I have a hard time even stepping in to one of those places these days. The smell of movie popcorn and artificial butter-flavored grease has a bad effect on my psyche. Brings back things I'd rather not think about...

... Too many repressed memories of the stuff I found between and under the seats when cleaning...

Oh! The horrors! THE HORRORS!!!

:joy:

It does look extremely good. I've seen a few trailers/clips of it and it seems to have a great style. It's nice to see the pirate movie genre have a breath of life pushed into it after it was seemingly doomed.

I'm so there! Any movie with pirates and swords in it has my movie-going dollar...

As long as it's better than that Pirates movie Roman Polanski did. I've never made it through that movie without falling asleep.

I do think Walter Matthau played an excellent pirate, though. :D

I was blown away. I had the joy of seeing it the opening night. It was everything a Monkey Island fan like me could hope for and more.

I had seen the previews and thought, "OK, it looks like it has potential. I hope Disney doesn't blow it." They didn't. Far from it. I found myself greatly enjoying the movie through and through. For Monkey Island fans, let me describe it:

Pirates, huge cast, great characters, insult swordfighting, creepy skeleton pirates, goofy skeleton pirates, making opponents argue with each other while you steal their ship, pirate curses, talking parrots, monkeys, humor, pirate hero, walk the plank, marroon on island, escape from island, outrageous "stories" of previous adventures, and on and on and on...

This was as close to a Monkey Island movie they could do without calling Orlando Bloom's character "Guybrush Threepwood." (except the music wasn't as outstanding. It was still great, but not as beautiful as MI)

This movie is a keeper! Finally, a great pirate movie! And it just happens to come from the same attraction the immortal Monkey Island series was based off of. Maybe other filmmakers will realize that great pirate movies can be made...

I saw the trailer and thought it was crap, but after those comments I might reconsider. Especially the insult swordfighting thing sounds interesting. Anyways I'll have to wait for a while, since it's not out yet in Finland.

It has pirates. It has dead pirates.

DUH THIS MOVIE'S GONNA BE GOOD!

I'm gonna see it tommorow with a bunch of friends. I'm gonna see if there's some obsecre Mi refrence (Image: Dead pirate with a striking resembleance to Bob...(who is now my avastor!) )

Also, its going to be good because of....

Johnny Depp, a god:monkey4:

though i can't see Depp as anyone from Mi...definatly not Guybrush....

Has everyone here seen the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl yet? If you haven't, you are a fool (or live in a foreign country where it has not yet been released) because the movie is AMAZING. It is probably the closest thing to seeing Monkey Island on the movie screen yet. Jack Sparrow is an amazing character, and although he is not like our hero Guybrush in every way and manner, it doesn't matter. Johnny Depp's character just steals the whole movie and is one of the most amazing pirate characters I've ever seen on the screen. You NEED to see this movie. Multiple times.

Elaine Marley, I mean, Keira Knightley gets kidnapped by Lechuck, I mean Geoffrey Rush, an undead pirate captain (MI 1)...

Prison scene with dog with keys (MI 2)...

Only things missing are three headed monkeys and cannibals...

It's a really cool movie, too! Johnny Depp is great and finally some real stunts instead of the usual stupid CGI crap. Go see it - maybe we'll get more piratey movies! ARRR!

That was a scene on the Ride and was taken directly from the ride and put into the game by ron gilbert (why was the dog in mi2 named Walt I wonder?). disney completely had the right to put that into their film if they wanted to.

Very true. The cool part about this part of the movie though, was that the scene was identical to the one in the ride, all the way down to what the dog looked like. Yet it didn't seem like something they pasted on to the movie, it fit seemlessly with what was going on.

There were lots of scenes from the original ride in the movie, though it's been many years since I've been to Disney World and can't remember many of them.

One's I remember:

Dog/Key scene

Guy with pigs scene

Skeletons dressed in disguise (I won't say as what 'cause that was a great part and I don't want to spoil it for those who were cursed to not being able to see it yet)

"Drink up me hearties yo ho!" song

I'm sure there are many more. Anyone else recall any?

I just saw it! johnnyjohnnyjohnnyDEPP!!!!!!!!!!!3heart :spin:

I don't wanna spoil nothing, but did the pirate whose wooden eye kept falling out look like the Head of the Navigator from Mi1?

And did the captian of the Black Pearl, Balastor(is that spelt right?) remind anyone of LeChuck, in some bizzare way?

hmmm....dumb question...if Depp could be someone from the Mi seires, who?

"Barbossa", and he was indeed similar to LeChuck. ;

Other than that, I think Depp's character was one of the few in the movie that didn't remind me of any of the MI characters. I have a feeling MI5 might have a similar character in it though. :¬:

whoops...i think blastors are those stone things in a ship...:p

hmmm...it must be very late, but this thought entered my mind....

In Mi5, Depp's character, Jack Sparrow, should be simliar to Guybrush's daughter...much smarter, much faster, and more "savvy" then Guybrush.

Was anyone else dissappointed at the fact that the undead were shown...well...not many times?...perhaps i am the only one :(

No, oh, wait, i haven't seen it yet. But in the trailer, it showed clips of skeletons walking in slow mo towards the screen, it looked cool. Don't spoil it for me, but I'm guessing this is a very short scene (but very powerful).
