Goodbye, and thanks for the fun time!

Hey everyone,

Well, this is it. In a press release on July 25, 2000, Lucasarts announced that, together with Bioware, they were going to create an epic Star Wars role-playing game, set 4000 thousand years before the events of the movies, and tomorrow, on July 16th, 2003, this game will be in the shops. The long period of waiting is finally over, the speculation can stop... those who live in America and Canada with an X-Box will be able to play the game and be immersed into this new era of the Star Wars universe.

As I've mentioned before, the day when Knights of the Old Republic is released on what kind of console whatsoever, is the day when I'm going into a self-imposed exile/hermitage until I've finished the game on my PC. Basically, this means that I'll be avoiding various Star Wars-related forums to avoid any spoilers for Knights of the Old Republic. This will include spoilers, as a quick peek at IGN's review already revealed one spoiler I didn't want to know. It might sound a bit odd, as I hunted down previews just like any other KotOR fan would, and speculated regarding the storyline... for me, it was all just that: Speculation. Everything I said and predicted can and will probably turn out to be false. But well, once the game is released, too many spoilers will appear, and that is the one thing that I don't want to see. I want to be surprised when I play the game, I want to be surprised when I see the first Force powers in action, I want to be shocked at the plot twists throughout the story, and I want to look back at a well-crafted, surprising storyline once the credits start to roll.

Before someone mentions it, I've heard about plans that there'll be "X-Box-specific" and "PC-specific" forums. Although I have full faith in the capabilities of the moderators on this forum, I am still afraid that a newbie/troll will come along, post a mayor twist on the PC forums, and I'll read it before any of the mods do. I simply don't want that to happen, hence a hermitage to avoid those spoilers.

To get back on topic a bit: as I've said before, I'll be leaving various Star Wars-related sites and forums to avoid KotOR spoilers. Unfortunately, this will also mean starwarsknights.com and its forums. It's kinda funny actually; I am more of a lurker at forums than a poster. Whenever I read a thread about someone who's announcing that he's leaving the forums, I always chuckled, because these posts were always filled with bitter sentences, and words to gain attention from other forum goers (ie. "DON'T LEAVE"), at least, in my opinion. Despite being acting as a hypocrite on my own accord, I will have to mention that I am not posting this thread to spit out any bitter words or pray for attention. Rather, this thread is meant as a "thank you"-note to everyone who frequent these boards for a fun time I had here.

Like I said, I'm no Forum poster... but Knights of the Old Republic compelled me to post. After lurking the forums for a few days, I made my first post. Ack, later on, I even made my first thread without a formal introduction or anything. Quite brash of me in those days :p I had tried to stay at several forums earlier on, but none really interested me much. I always posted in a few topics, maybe post a thread, and then got bored with it, mostly because of the many rude posters. Swknights.com was different tough. The visitors seemed really friendly, and the discussions intrigued me. I can assure you that 90%-95% of my LF posts were made here, at this site. And all the friendly discussions and debates were very fun to stay with, and I remember a lot of thing. I can remember going wild with various posters once they showed the first screenshots of Taris with a double-blade saber-wielding Bastilla Shan fighting a dual-wielding Dark Jedi whilst Carth Onassi was helping by fighting with two blasters, and the many screenshots that followed. I can remember being interested when information was released about Jolee Bindo, Bastilla Shan, and the many biographies that followed. I can remember getting goose bumps from Korriban's well-written entry and the entries that followed. I can remember being somewhat ecstatic when I discovered a few secret screenshots at the Lucasarts site. I can remember being intrigued by the Czerka Corporation when I noticed its name resurfacing throughout the entries. I can remember speculating regarding Bindo and Shan's destiny. I can remember playing the violin as people began complaining about the release date or the lack of Multiplayer/Toolsets :p

So many interesting and fun memories regarding a game that I haven't even played yet. Heck, who knows, maybe the game isn't all that cracked up to be (I know, I know: BLASPHEMY!). Regardless, the wait was a whole lot more interesting with everyone at these forums, and it has truly been a great experience. So my gratitude goes out to Jedi Apprentice, Com Raven, Leemu Taos, Jedi220, Eets, Padanime, Swat, Lord Glorfindel, GothicSith, Kabutar, and all the swknights.com visitors, both posters and lurkers alike, for generally making this forum helluva lot more interesting, and making the long wait bearable.

My only regret is that I didn't post at the Ahto Spaceport Cantina as often as I'd like. I would've liked to have participated with more discussions, but for some reason, never bothered to post.

In case anyone wonders, what can I possibly do during these months until the PC version is released? There is that thing called real life (vacation's about to start), and I have to prepare myself for teaching a few programming classes. When it comes to computer games, I guess that most of my time will spent on Bioware's other RPG, Neverwinter Nights. There are still several modules I wish to play, and I recently bought the Shadows of Undrentide add-on. The campaign of SoU is rather 'stay-up-till-4am' addictive, and I've heard that there might be a path for good and evil characters, so I've got my hands filled with that. There are the many MP games at neverwinterconnections.com that'll be sure to entertain me. Finally, being somewhat interested in DMing, I'm still working on perfecting my module "Prophecy of Ramola", and I am already planning on working on a new module with a certain hak pak in mind. Hopefully, with this and a few other games, I'll be able to pull through the hermitage.

Well, this post has certainly gotten a lot longer than I originally anticipated. I suppose, I can only give out a final THANK YOU to you all for the fun time I had here. I am certainly going to miss visiting the forums each day to see what kind of new developments there are. If anyone wishes to stay in contact, I can be reached via MSN at burrie24@hotmail.com, and via Yahoo Messenger as rvdleun. Heck, if you wish to contact me via e-mail, you can try ruben@vanderleun.com. Just be sure to never mention any KotOR spoilers, whatsoever.

I suppose this is it. Good day everyone, have fun playing Knights of the Old Republic soon, and I'm looking forward to reading your stories and sharing mine once I've completed the game on the PC.

This is Burrie signing off... for now. *hops onto swoop bike and speeds off towards the desert*

Sincerely,

Ruben van der Leun

Burrie, I know what you mean. I avoided the JKII forums (as a lurker) as well when the game came out.

This is a bit different however, since there may be XBox and PC forums. Hopefully, people will know the difference. ;)

On second thoughts. Why don't we just keep replying to this thread. Then Burrie will have to come back to reply. :p

:(

Burrie, you are a great guy and I have extremely enjoyed reading your posts and chatting with you on mIRC. The speculating times were great!

I hope you have a good time during your hermitage, stay sane and like Eets said, there will always be a nice comfy chair with your name on it. ;)

Have fun and I'm looking forward to seeing you back on here after you beat the PC version. :)

Burrie, I will truly miss you. ='( I completely understand why are you are avoiding the place though. I consider myself pretty spoiler free up to a certain point.

As soon as you've played the game, you better come back, or else! :fist: I'll have a nice jar of cookies waiting for you. ;)

Why exactly are we all posting here? Burrie is probably not reading, as he is not posting. I have to think, though, that he will return, at least to lurk, a few times between now and...November...at least I know I would...I mean I know I will...who am I? Where am I? Help!

Quit being unhealthy, Hannibal. Learn to release your emotions, you must. Teach you, I can.

Now everyone, group hug with Hannibal.

*hugs Hannibal*

@Boinga-- What, do you want the mods to close the post after Burrie made it? You can't do that to Burrie!

Burrie!

Burrie?!

Burrie????

*grabs more kleenex*
