I think that 'good' game music is very situational.

From what I've seen, the majority of people here seem to like metal or pop, and fewer, rap. That seems to constitute the vast majority of people here. Yet some download the KotOR soundtrack, or enjoy the orchestral scores to various RPG games. Not because they are fans of that type of music, but because it works.

Conversely, the same music that works in one game would be completely wrong for another. Imagine the Painkiller music during KotOR.

Yet there is also much music that just falls flat. I can't really remember anything special about the music for many games. Doesn't mean it wasn't good or bad, it just didn't stand out.

So rather than 'best' music, perhaps it is 'best fit' game music:

- The music during Yavin Training in JKII

- During the Correlian tram level in JA

- Painkiller's music (so far as I've gotten) is fitting for the ripfest.

- Thief's non-soundtrack is very fitting.

- KotOR is just great ... anything by Jeremy Soule.

I agree wholeheartedly.

HALO (and every bit of music I've heard from HALO2 demos).

MYST game series music, very ethereal, very pretty, very fitting to the games. Especially for MYST and RIVEN, though...

Gotta throw in Age of Empires II, just because it's a nice background to what you're doing.

Freespace I and II, both of which had very nice scores.

And of course, any SW game in general that has John Williams music in it.

Can't believe no one's mentioned the Command & Conquer soundtracks. Some of the best beats ever composed for a series of games.Best one has to be C&C: Red Alert, with 'Hell March' and 'Bigfoot'.

Pretty much anything by Nobuo Uematsu is gold. My personal favorite soundtracks from the FF games are FFVI and FFX. FFX-2 also has a pretty funky soundtrack, but Uematsu wasn't behind that one. Noriko Matsueda and Takahito Eguchi came up with some good beats for that adventure.

Yasunori Mitsuda composed the soundtracks for Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. Those were awesome, especially Time's Scar, the opening theme to Cross.

The .hack games soundtracks were composed by Yuki Kajiura, the same person who did the anime soundtracks and she did not disappoint.

The collection of music from Madden 2004 was pretty damn good. I don't think that there was one song I didn't like on that list, and I don't normally like rap music.

The Ninja Gaiden soundtrack was kickass. Nothing like stabbing some demon ass to sweet techno beats and tranquil Japanese flavored music.

And finally, the SSX 3 soundtrack has to be my favorite music at the moment. Must go and find the CD...

Well, it's certainly... Fitting. But let's talk games again. I forgot to mention that, of the starwars games, MOTS had the best music... I forgot what KOTOR sounded like, but MOTS was Nice and Dark, very, very dark. Yes, the music was fitting indeed, as you crawled trough ancient sith catacombs and avoid deadly traps and creatures... It was like an ultra dark version of the Imp march, wich is my fav piece of music...

did i mention i'm obsessed with starwars AND especially if it's nice and Dark...

... Like ESB...

Yes - Dark Forces music was really good (thanks for the link! I put it on my iPod!)

Which also reminded me that they had given out the BG2 soundtrack some time ago ... so I loaded that up. Another wonderful set of music.

... oh, and sabretooth - Cool as a genre was already taken ~55 years ago ... see Miles Davis' 'Complete Birth of the Cool' for details ;)

I thought KotOR's music was exceptional, as well as Grand Theft Auto: Vice City's varied 80's music and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault's atmospheric music were excellent.

I might say Morrowind's music, but that just got really, really repetitive after a while.
