Oblivion [warning: contains some spoilers]

...does it have the kind of story that will confuse the crap out of you if you haven't played the whole series?

I can't speak for Oblivion but MW. You don't play MW for the story, you play it for the games-mechanics (and I'm not talking about gameplay because the gameplay is... weak). You will not understand anything about the storyline, not because you haven't played the previous games, but because the story-progression, story-presentation is so weak and horrible that after a while you just won't care. As I said, you don't play these games for the story (read my first post near top of the page).

As I said the story isin't related to the other games. Bethesda even said they do this on puropse. I didnt play any of the other games , and I had no problem understanding the main quest storyline. On that note I doubt you'll see any of the same characters <or even hear about them > from Morrowind in Oblivion. In my opinion the storyline in morrowind was fine. It was'nt as in-depth as the main quest storyline for games like TSL or KoTor, but there are so many faction quests and random places to explore! They left it so open so you could choose to be whatever you want and do whatever you want. Dont want to complete the main quest thread? Dont have to. This is simply a matter of opinion, but I dont really think the MW storyline sucked.

Who would'nt want a giant cat for a girlfriend?

On another note: Yesh D333 help us out! Heh I played morrowind ALOT and I did <almost>all of it w/o mods.........Darn....now I have to go back and play it again.

Oblivion looks great, I've been keeping an eye on this games since it was announced. The only problem with the graphics that I can see is that they look to good, I have to wonder how modders are going to improve on that ;).

I've been a fan of Morrowind Since the first screens I saw before it was released. I've played through that game with atleast 6 characters, once you get to level 50 it gets pretty boring ( walking around with no clothes on killing Demi gods isn't fun for very long ;) )

I Played through again last year before Xmas, I don't have it installed now but I saved my fav mods, but Darth333's 200 beats my 90.

The mods I would reccomend as must haves are :

All of the Official Dev plug-ins

Better bodies new skin mesh's. huge improvment over the the games models.

A great mod hunting resource is TELESPHOROS' LIST o'MODS

These mods can all be found at Morrowind Summit: http://www.rpgplanet.com/morrowind/modcontrols/mods.asp

RealSignposts

Scrollsv1.1 or Scrolls icons(sorry not certain

Vivec_Expansion_v1.1

Balmora Expansion v1.4

Windows Glow: adds alittle color to the cities at night.

Npc Replacer 3.50 (there could be a newer version ;) all this one does is change the heads of the npc's to add more variety ( I think you need Better bodies installed)

Enchantment Color De-Enhancer (reduces the strenth of the enchantment shader)

OR

No-Glo( eliminates the enchantment shader)

This is not a mod but is very helpfull if you want to make some potions but are not sure what ingredients you need. http://morrowind.melian.cc/potionmachine/

And here are some modders personal sites:

http://www.deffeyes.com/morrowind/index.html

http://canadianice.ufrealms.net/Morrowind/Index.html

Sorry I would have more but my morrowind knowledge is outdated again ;)

Yah, I have the "Better" line of mods (Bodies, Beasts & Heads), Real Signposts, the NPC replacer (still at v3.5), No-Glo (weapons looked way too much like plastic wrap for my tastes)... the Ranger's Tent which is completely awesome (portable "house" with storage) & the Giant's line of mods (giants, dragons, etc.)...

Also, I've got Vampire's Embrace & Werewolf Evolution, but have yet to be infected by either to see if I got the merge to work right ;)

One thing about Holowan, explaining the user-made Tools (not MW's Construction Set) and how to use them is much more 'friendly' here... took me forever to to learn MW's user mod tools. Learning how to 'clean' them, merge them, level list, blah blah.. was all Greek to me and almost more intimidating to try and learn them.

I have all the great folks here to thank for strengthening my skillset to understand MW's stuff ;) Thanks Guys/Gals :D

I tired that Giants mod in my last play through, but I had to remove it because of several quite horrible creature models included with it. my enjoyment of the game was being dragged down by that one, there was another reason why I removed but I don't need to mention it here. if you like that mod then that great. Just be aware that if you want to remove it you will get a ton of error messages calling for missing models and textures, it won't damage the save but it took me like 20 minutes to click through all the errors and resave the game.

I never tried that portable tent though it seemed to much like cheating, although I did make my own Packguar fast travel system to fill in some long distance hikes on the Island. If you can believe it I got tired of using my 400+ levatate potions that would last a couple game days. With high enough intelligence you can make anything uber in the game.

Thanks for the heads up T7. Yah, I "ran into" one of the Mountain Trolls last night and frankly the model (or perhaps the horrid skin), well ...it blew... hehehe... ;)

I did an .ini hack and recovered the "Yes To All" button on the GUI though ;) Should take a few seconds to "clean" it with that little treasure :D

I am enjoying the alchemy system though... my potions tend to outdo anything I could ever buy, plus it gives me a reason to "explore" the scenery and go ingredient hunting (buying them is way too.. meh)...

Sorry all for the "diverted topic", but with the mention of Oblivion (which I'm definitely looking forward to now).. I thought it might be best to keep the MW stuff together. Seems there's renewed interest in the game this thread caused.. hehehe

One thing I've yet to be able to find reference to however... is there a Level Cap in this game? Come to think of it... is there a cap on anything such as Abilities, etc.?? My character is leveling like mad (because I'm using my major skills alot) but I know I haven't even scratched the surface of this game... I'd hate to find out I'll cap without even finishing half of the game ;)

I didnt really see any level cap in MW. Seems like there should be as there comes a point when you can pretty much waste anyone in the game <including Vivec> without blinking an eye........Once I got those spiffy swords from Tribunal I found that I quickly tired of killing anything weaker than a vampire....... Fighting the fabricants was fun as heck though.

Yeah they alchemy was my fave thing to use...fighting with swords get boring after awile.

I'm glad that this thread has been so popular...hehe everyone thoulght I was a total freak for plaing MW so much....good to know Im not alone in my freakyness...haha

The sites and mods listed by t7 are pretty good. Better bodies is definitely a plus.

Another site I like for mods is this one: http://www.thelys.org/index.php

Note that some of the mods below conflict but with a little bit of patience, conflicts are generally easy to solve with the toolset. One thing you have to know is that mods are loaded according to their time stamp and sometimes, just changing this can fix compatibility issues. I have a small utility at home that allows you to change the time stamp of any file in a few clicks. I don,t remember the name but I'll verify and post a link later on.

Warning: people with low end systems may experience slowdowns if they install too many mods adding new npcs and towns.

ChAiNz for the vampire mods, Vampire's Embrace is pretty good - makes the vampire experience more interesting as the original one it is pretty boring as no one talks with you - but I like to combine it with Vampire Realism: http://www.rpgplanet.com/morrowind/modcontrols/mod.asp?modid=2404

With some races or after a certain point in the game, you can't really get infected normally so you may need an item to give you 100% weakness to disease. I made one if you need it. Note that if you pick the quarra clan, the quest is bugged. I have a patch too but I suggest another clan anyways.

My favorite heads: http://home.wnm.net/%7Ebgriff/MW_Home.html (included in better bodies if I remember well)

If you are looking for side quests, the Constance and Laura Craft (nothing to see with Lara Croft) companion mods and the The White Wolf Of The Lokken Mountain are pretty good: http://lovkullen.net/Emma/quests.htm. The children of Morrowind mod is also excellent but it's more for atmosphere than anything else. It looks like you can also have your dog or cat now but I didn't tried those mods.

There's another excellent side-quest mod but since it has adult oriented themes I won't post a link here . I can PM it to you if you want (or anyone else who has the legal age). It's a 394 meg download.

Nice armors - the Knights of Tamriel armors can be acquired through mini quests: http://www.rpgplanet.com/morrowind/modcontrols/author.asp?name=Jeremy%20McGuinn (the nicest armors I saw on the net - there are a couple pages - check them! )q

If you look for houses, the houses here are nice and cosy but not out of proportion: http://www.morrowind-mod.com/Abu%20Manor%20Information.html

If you want to go extravagant, then Solsteim Castle is for you: http://korana.elricm.com/Housing.htm :p It's pretty well done. Even if youa re not a fan of huge houses, when you get bored, give it try.

And finally, if you like to be able to cook, get drunk, make weapons etc:

the COmplete morrowind mod is more oriented towards crafting: http://www.elricm.com/nuke/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewdownloaddetails&lid=470

or

Necessities of morrowind is more oriented towards "real life" stuff such as obligation to eat, sleep, you can also get drunk and end up being caught in a bar fight :phttp://www.thelys.org/mods.php?a=Taddeus_and_Nymeria

(I use this one but with some modified some features)

If you made a fighter character and do not intend to invest to much in lockpicking skills, Lock Bash Enhanced allows you to open doors and such by bashing into them: http://www.thelys.org/mods.php?a=TheLys#Lock_Bash_Enhanced

Edit: I forgot the Reign of Fire mod which adds dragons to the game: http://www.rpgplanet.com/morrowind/modcontrols/mod.asp?modid=4548 - you can even ride them :D

and Morrowind comes Alive which adds tons of new npcs to the game: http://www.rpgplanet.com/morrowind/modcontrols/mod.asp?modid=2235, including people you can hire.

There's no level cap. You can raise your attributes normally up to 100 but you can also get some bonuses at some places to raise them higher.

And btw, about Oblivion, anyone saw this? http://www.fileplanet.com/157380/150000/fileinfo/The-Elder-Scrolls-IV:-Oblivion-Gameplay-Footage-%5B20-Mins%5D

WOW! Thanks Darth333:D

Of course, I play mostly a Rogue type character in any RPG... so I made a Custom Class (a better rogue/agent called "The Wayward") right off the bat starting Morrowind. I can pick a 100 level lock like it was child's play.. not getting caught however is a different story .. hehehe (telekenisis kicks arse)...

I'll look into the other mods you mentioned, though now I'm torn because I'd like to get through the add-ons relatively soon before/after the Oblivion release. But again, I'mnot going to sacrifice my gaming experience just to beat a timeline.. I'm patient enough ;) hehehe...

Yeah! I saw the footage last night and was amazed! Oblivion is going to be Super-Sweet!

I easily spent 100+ hours on morrowind. I loved it so much(got the GotY edition for Xbox). However, my only regret was that I was never able to complete it fully. But me, being a completist and perfectionist, just never got the chance to finish(I restarted too much). :(

I'll definitely be picking up Oblivion though. :)

Arise ancient thread ..."Arise!"...

Well, rather than start a new thread for this game, since I only have a tid-bit of info on it..

Bethesda Thanks tk! ;) finally released Oblivion's system requirements :emodanc:

Start saving your pennies cuz' this game is hungry for some major processing if you want their "Recommended Requirements" Otherwise, looks like it's going to be 'playable' with human-level specs.. still.. I can only imagine what this game will be like if you do have the recommended :D

Concidering that the FPS in Morrowind tend to drop below 20 on a regular basis (and often below 10 while in Balmora or Vivec even with low FOW setting) on my computer, which is way better than the Recommended requirements for that game, chances are Oblivion would be nearly unplayable on the Minimum requirements. (Unless they have made the Oblivion engine a lot more efficient.)

Not that this would stop me from getting the game anyway, if I become convinced it's good enough. I played KotOR1 for about a month on a computer much slower than the minimum requirements (until I bought my current one), average FPS was about 5. Rather frustrating experience, but that game was worth it. :)

Well I'm hoping I'll be able to upgrade my Video card before the game comes out, but even If I can't I'll suffer the low frames until I can afford to upgrade. I first played Morrowind On a 600Mgz Pentium 3, I would get about 5-8 fps in cities and 15-20 in the widerness but it was still fun.

I suspect Oblivion will be an even better game, so I'm will to suffer low pfps for a little while. ;)

I found this video on Google video, it shows alot of great footage. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-80675935532902762&q=oblivion

Its a high res video so it will take a few minutes to DL for cable users

Sweet Vid! :D

I'm definitley looking forward to the ability to cast spells while still armed.. will definitley enhance my personal style of playing.. and yah, FPS be damned, I'm getting this game for sure! I'll crawl around at 2 fps if I have too.. hehehe..

I saw that video a few days ago. Pretty sweet.

...and the map looks big: "vierzig quadratkilometer Fläche" ! (a surface of 40 square kilometers) cool! :D

I'll see how it runs first but maybe I'll purchase an additional gig of ram. The recommeneded video cards requirements are pretty high too! (luckily I already took care of that part)

Edit: Here's a small teaser made by a guy at the official Oblivion forums, I thought it was funny especially if you are have seen the official videos and played morrowind:

- Large Detailed Version (7 minutes, 56 MB)

- Puny Weak Small Version (26 MB)

Pete Hines (Vice President of PR and Marketing), gives a sneak Peek at what's going to be included in the "Collector's Edition" of Oblivion :D

Click here for more details on the "Fluff" version .. hehehe

http://www.elderscrolls.com/codex/team_obliv_cediary.htm

One thing to note, is that Oblivion will be released on a single DVD.. Wow, I would've thought more than that, but considering pressed DVD's can hold anywhere from 4-17gb of data... niiiice... (dvd capacity determined by "sides & layers" combination.. look it up if you don't believe me.. hehehe)

though I know it's pretty much a "standard" nowadays.. better be sure you have a DVD drive on your compy ;)

One DVD for either version. Yes, it all fits on one. Yes, it's only available on DVD for PC users. While we're on the subject, I should note that we are doing a number of localized versions for Europe. There will be fully localized versions in Germany and France. That means the whole game — voice and text — are fully translated. We are doing semi-localized versions in Italy and Spain, which means all the text (including dialogue) is translated, but the voices are in English. Hopefully that will make a lot folks very happy as I know we get asked that an awful lot, or at least I do.

It's about time more Dev's started releasing games on DVD. There really isn't any excuse not to have a dvd-rom nowadays. I wonder though how long it will take for developer's to exceed the capacity of one dvd.

Personally though I don't see the point of buying the collector's edition.
