I dont think I could have said it myself any better. I had this huge post all ready and then ..... oh what? they already said it <thank you InsaneSith, Darth333 and Prime>.

As some of you might be able to tell....I am a fanatic for electonic music. Ive listened to <I'm not kidding here I used to go out ALOT>almost a thousand live/mixed sets, and there is NO OTHER type of music that will ever rock my soul the way a good house set will. Oddly enough I was raised in a family of classicially trained musicians, and after playing my father some REALLY well done tech-house tracks even he is starting to boogie down! I'd like to think that after playing music for 30 years he would know what sounds good.

Cant teach an old dog new tricks? Thats only because he doesnt want to learn any. Sorry MKR but I think youre a little biased on this one.

Well, I have to admit, yes I am biased. But aren't we all?

I do not, can not, will not listen to rap or hip-hop. It drives me crazy no matter whether it is mainstream or underground. I know that people said/say the same thing about my music (mainly 80's metal), but that still doesn't change the fact that I don't like it. I like lots of music. Basically anything except for rap/hip-hop and country. I like techno, jazz, classical, new age, emo, heavy metal, death metal, soundtracks, stomp, etc. Rap is not music to my ears. When I was in high school, me and my friends even had a creed about it. It stated that "Rap is not music because...a turntable is not a musical instrument, a hyperventilating fat boy is not a musical instrument, a drum machine is not a musical instrument, and rap groups are fronted by people who can't sing. If they could sing, they wouldn't be rapping!"

In short, my opinion that a turntable is not a musical instrument may be out of date, but that is something that I may never accept. Live with it and move on.

I think he's right in that rap is not music. It's just a bunch of guys singing about getting high, describing how they had sex the night before, and shooting people they don't like. The lyrics are offensive, the "beat" is annoying and repetative, and I hate people who listen to it.

It's jazz all the way for me.

You hate the people that listen to it? :eyeraise:

Guess that puts me on your list...

However, this is getting way off-topic. The thread is about what instruments you play. So let's get back on topic before this starts getting out of line ;)

Stereotyping is bad for you, and gives you AIDS.

The argument isn't whether you should like it or not, just whether they are musicans or not. :)

Have you every listened to country, or 60's/70's rock? It isn't like rap is the only genre that has songs about that stuff. Not by a long shot.

Whoa. I wasnt even talking about rap in the firstplace. I was talking about turntablisim, djing, and scratching (with respect to electronica). I belive this was concerning whether the turntable could be considered a "playable" instrament. Since I feel that a perfectly valid argument has already been presented I'm not going to go too much further......however........

As a musician myself, I have alot of respect for anyone that can master the turntables. As for whether a person chooses to BELIVE that they are an instrament....I have this to say: The vocal chords are an instrament, regardless of our belif. The saxaphone is an instrament, whether we call it that or not. It is the same for a set of turntables. Belive it or not, it still does'nt change the reality of the situation. Had you the same experiences as I you would say the same. Since thats not possible...I say belive whatever you want :)

@ The Doc: I dont really appreciate that statement. Would you like it if I said, "I hate all people who listen to Jazz?" (I dont I'm just making a point)

Back on topic: I have a suggestion, why not add -woodwind- -brass- -turntable<or other electronic instrament> to your categories in the poll? Then you could include the people who might not play the more mainstream instraments without lumping them all into the "other" category. hehe.

Just a thoulght.

Have a nice day.

I apologize. I didn't mean I hate the people who listen to it, I was on a rant. I hate when people discuss it in public and loop one song to make it play over, and over, and over, and over, and over like some people I know. I certainly don't hate you. As a matter of fact, I look up to you and the other moderaters of the site. You guys have created mods that I could never hope to achieve. I just hate rap.

I realize that, but thankfully I don't hear much of that kind of "song" other than rap. Besides, not all songs from the 60's and 70's are about the same thing. THE BEATLES RULE!

I've played a little bass guitar, but thats about it... oh and sing a little, or rather used to.

my brother-in-law, plays piano (learned to play by ear first, then learned to read music), he also plays bass guitar, bango, drums, a little fiddle :D and some other types of instrustments that i can't remember all of right off hand... he also sings, he plays and sings for a christian music group... he has even writen a bunch of songs, so i guess that makes he a writer also...

he's multi-talented, i'm jealous :¬:
