This is horrible...but I wonder if foreign aid is going dry with all the disasters happening. Too bad most of the deaths happend because of the poorly built houses in the area..at least the leader of Pakistan accepted aid from India. Maybe this could stop the feuding between them...I hope. It could very well be an automatic mechanism, where nature periodically becomes worse to keep the total population in check. Natural disasters are not new but we tend to forget them pretty quickly when they don't affect us directly: some of the worst natural disasters in history. Damn! China sure has it tough, most of their disasters near the millions. 1959 - China In July 1959, massive floods in China kill at least 2 million people. Earthquakes don't kill people, collapsing buildings do. Asia: lots of people crammed together in buildings of mostly inferior quality. Result: tombstones. Result: tombstones. Exactly. Even in the most terrible earthquakes, the worst that the quake itself can do is make you fall on your bum. Perhaps the rare falling into a fissure. And the people who say this is "God punishing us" usually can't even agree on what exactly we did to deserve the punishment or why "worse" people were untouched, etc. If one wants to attach philosophical significance to diasters, one could say these are opportunities for us to realize our own mortality, and the stupidity of our internal squabbles, and focus on helping each other and sharing each other's burdens in life. Nature Diasters simply happen. That doesn't mean you can't try to make the best of it. Sure, we can minimize stuff by building our houses away from coastlines and fault lines and volcano craters and away from places were avalanches can happen, etc. but we can't entirely avoid nature disasters. We can take safety precautions, and try to follow early warning signs, but you get the idea. And yes, poorest people are hit hardest because they have less to fall back on, less means of escape and less means to get the best protection in the first place. It's hurrican season. Katrina's devestation was mostly a result of the weakened levies that lead to flooding, and deadlock and lack of transportation a lot of people had, lead to many of the deaths. In a poor country with a large population clustered in one area and crappy homes, as was said, leads to more loss of human life. Anyway, donate, pray. toms Posted October 18, 2005 Share Posted October 18, 2005 Most of the huge chinese ones were from a long time ago, I'd suspect a lot of the deaths came from famine and disease afterwards, as I doubt there were particularly good ways to deal with either in 30s to 50s china. This one in South Asia is looking pretty bad, but I haven't noticed anywhere near as much "hype" about it as the tsunami or the new orleans flood. I think its partly because its more distant, with less westerners affected, and partly because with so many disasters in such a short time people are experiencing a kind of "sympathy fatigue".
