Arreat
Link A LAD who only ate chips, toast and baked beans was killed by his junk diet — aged just 20. After years of unhealthy eating, Scott Martin’s liver began to fail, he developed hepatitis and his blood would not clot. Sixteen-stone Scott refused a life-saving liver transplant because he was too scared and was so weak he needed a wheelchair. He finally bled to death after an op to remove three infected teeth. His devastated family told yesterday how they had tried to get Scott to eat proper food since childhood. His sister Gail Fairweather said: “Scott would never eat any fruit or vegetables. There were only a few things he would eat — McDonald’s chips were his favourite. “He would eat toast — but only if it was made from sliced white Danish bread, with a thin spreading of Lurpak butter. “ He would eat baked beans, but only Morrisons’ own brand and only now and then. “He was always like that, from being little. Finding stuff he would eat was such a struggle.” Scott, of Sunderland, fell ill last year and at first his family thought he had flu. Mum-of-six Gail said: “He was tired all the time and could not walk far. He got out of breath very quickly and could barely get across the room.” Medics discovered liver problems — although he rarely drank. Scott was sent to a dietician after refusing the transplant — but didn’t like nutritional supplements on offer. Doctors insisted on the teeth op, fearing Scott would be killed by blood poisoning — but afterwards his gums would not stop bleeding. Mum Margaret, 48, said: “The hardest thing is he was so young. I’d do anything to have him back.” Now do as your mom tells you and eat your vegetables!

IG-64
I love vegitables. I eat broccoli, spinach, carrots, corn, ect. and it's all good to me. I like fruits not so much but i'll eat stuff like apples, watermelons, grapes, and tangerines, and lemon is one of my favorite flavors. It confuses me when people refuse to eat stuff like broccoli because it's just good to me. *shrugs* Sucks for that kid though, I wonder why they didn't just put him on an IV? El Sitherino
The kid ate **** all of anything good for his body, an IV would've most likely made it worse. Either by his body not being able to process the "foreign substance" or his body would be incapable of staving off infection of the penetrated area. Cause apparently nutritional supplements wouldv'e helped. Maybe he had a healthy food phobia or something.
edlib
Too bad for his parents... but something tells me they failed in some way to educate him properly about the importance of proper nutrition. One for the Darwin Awards...
BongoBob
God, and I thought that I ate unhealthily : | This makes me look like a health nut : | Don't they have a treatment for eating disorders (or at least that's what it seems like to me) like that? manoman81
Yeah, I saw this yesterday. Pretty pathetic if you ask me. But, what do I know. I won't even say it sucks to be him because it was his and his parents own fault. Another reason why they might not have used an IV is because when he had that surgery they couldn't get him to stop bleeding. Poking a hole in a vein probably wouldn't have helped. toms
Surely cutting him open and giving him a new liver would have been tricky too... Unless they just served it to him with chips. I read somewhere that in 10 years the uk will have caught up with the US in the unhealthy eating stakes... and the scots are supposed to be more unhealthy than most of the rest of the UK, so they must have a head start. Mmm, chips... *goes off for lunch*

Jeff
If you're that stupid that you won't eat right even to save your life, you don't deserve to keep living. Thats the way I see it. Sure it's sad and all, but he must have known if he keeps eating like that, he's gonna die.
Mike Windu
Sucks for him, I know it's not completely the parents' fault, I'm sure they tried, like mine do, but teenagers rebel. I eat healthy for the most part, occasional junk food now and then. Just in this case it was a stupid rebellion.

Lady Jedi
Ugh. Junk food makes me sick. I get about two bites into anything loaded with 'bad stuff' and I'm out. Sure pizza, french fries, and other 'unhealthy food' can be really tasty, but not every day. I feel weird if I don't have at least one veggie in a day.... That's really sad that he died, though. People should have more sense.
toms
Its not entirely kids and parents fault though. Kids pallates don't develop properly until they get older, which is part of the reason why most kids (myself included) prefer sweets, chocolate, chips and junk food to anythign healthy. I used to be terribly unhealthy, but now i'm getting older i actually find it hard to stomach much of the stuff i loved as a kid/teenager. Also, the big companies have realised this, and most food that is mass produced is horrendously unhealthy and full of junk. I used to eat loads of "low fat" stuff, until i realised all the low fat stuff is high sugar and high salt - so its no better for you. Modern junk food is responsible for 90% of kids behaviour and learnign difficulties, and apparently for a lot of mental illness as well... but its damn hard to avoid. This case was a little extreme though....

toms
You got the facts to back that statement up, because I believe that's pure BS. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/health/healthmain.html?in_article_id=374214&in_page_id=1774 One high school in Appleton, Wisconsin replaced their regular poor-quality school lunches with healthy, fresh foods and water. The changes resulted in improved behavior and zero truancies. http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/XJ&sdn=nutrition&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.feingold.org%2FBluebook%2Fpage-09-wisconsin.pdf http://nutrition.about.com/od/nutritionforchildren/a/dietandlearning.htm I can't find a link for it, but the most convincing thing I saw was a programme on british tv (channel 4 i think) where they took a class of school kids and gave half a healthy diet and half their usual diet. Within a week the grades of the healthy lot had improved, they paid more attention in class, were less hyperactive, caused less trouble, etc... There was even one set of identical twins that they split betweent he two groups.. and the mother said that (after the initial tantrums about wanting sweets not apples) for the first time ever she didn't have to shout at one of the kids to go to bed or do his homework, and there was a huge difference between the behaviour of the "healthy" kid and the "normal" one. It was pretty darn impressive! But as far as i know its an experiment that has been repeated a number of times, and it seems pretty accepted among "the powers that be" that good food helps kids behaviour and learning... (there has been a big campaign recently in the UK to get the government to cough up more cash for decent school dinners on this very basis.) And mike, according to the article, he was like that when he was little as well, so it's not just so called "Rebelling" Its more like a weird habit that never got broken. I was watching (another!) tv programme a few weeks back were they got families with problem kids into a "big brother" style house for a few weeks and had a psychologist observe them and give them advice. There was one kid of about 7 who refused to eat ANYTHING solid. So he basicaly lived on about 50 or 60 yogurts a week! Give him anything remotely solid and he refiused to put it in his mouth or chew it! His parents were trying their best, but just eventually it just got easier to give up and give him stuff he would actually eat. But after a couple of weeks the psychologist had him eating thai chicken and rice! (ok, i wasn't watching it really, but i was ome for xmas and my mother used to teach psychology, so she had watched the whole series... and i just saw the last episode)
