Windows XP has been a good companion over the years, but now its getting old and rusty. A new guy's coming and his name is "Windows Vista".

Man I can't wait until it comes out, I've seen rumours on the net that said it should be arriving about 7th December this year.

Can anyone verify this? and whats your views? :D

meh I don't know when it is arriving. but I'm not gonna buy it. any and all software you currently own WILL NOT work on Vista.

as its 100% NOT reverse compatible

tis my expectation that this is gonna be a ME repeat.

and I'll go 100% linux before I buy vista

Vista got delayed a while back to 2007.

I'm not getting Vista. though, my dad will since its necessary for his work...which means i'll prolly have to get it :(. i'll prolly just dual-boot XP and Vista.

problem with Vista is that your gunna need to get a new vid card for DirectX 10 and some old-ish hardware won't work with Vista. and like what Revan said, lots of software will not work with Vista...

i'm not going to bother moving to Vista for quite some time. since the only reason for me moving to Vista would be for games, i'll probably wait until PC games start to require DX10 before i make the jump. as of now, though, most games are still being designed for DX9c, so its going to be a long time in coming.

I'm no marketing genius, but it sounds to me like it'd be economic suicide to design a game that requires DX10, since the customer base would be so small for quite some time yet, requiring an expensive new OS to run.

I'm not too keen on running out and buying Windows Vista (or downloading it from MSDN AA for that matter if it becomes available there) unless I absolutely have to.

While I haven't tested it myself, a few people I know who have tried the beta has said that the thing requires enormous amounts of computer resources, to the point of very noticably slowing down their computer when using it, compared to XP. Granted, this may be a beta thing that will be addressed for the release, but it hardly encourages me to make the switch. I prefer leaving system resources for applications to use and not have the OS use up it all.:)

Windows XP has so far proven to be by far the most reliable OS I have tried. It rarely crashes or requires reboots, and if a program crashes you can just terminate it and continue working without problems. When my OS for once is working this well I am reluctant to replace it with another, unproven one.

that is precisely the point: nobody is going to be developing games that require DX10 probably for at least 9-10 months after the initial Vista launch. ;)

If it's free....sure. If not, probably not.

Nothing is free with Microsoft :p

Vista is not on my list. I have no money for it. Besides, it already sounds like marketing suicide to make an OS require a better then average computer. Do they truly expect people to just fork out 3000$ for a computer so they can run Vista? Or gamers? Gamers won't follow since most games won't be DX10 for quite a while anyway and adding to it the factor that it's a ressource whore, it might take even longer for people to make the switch.

It frankly is weird, from pretty much all standpoints, to make an OS that forces you to upgrade that much. Sure, you can disable all the goodies, but then, what's the point?

In my opinion, it will take much longer for people, in general, to make the switch then Microsoft thinks. When will they stop forcing crap down our throats?

I don't know if I'll get it, if I do it'll come with a brand new machine.

I'd say it's life will depend on providing features that are worth the extra hardware for hardcore gamers, and stability, efficiency, and adaptability for business use.

I'd say the most important issue is not being able to use KOTOR TOOL and the other moding utilities. We might have to start a fund drive so the holowan heavies can take a few months off work and combine all current utilities into one vista compatible program:thmbup1:
