Nintendo Wii?

However, although I'm really finding it hard to take this name seriously.. it's pure marketing genius...

Yeah, most of us joke about it, gripe about it (me included).. blah blah.. but man, give it to Nintendo for spreading the hype... word-of-mouth is the best advertisement.. and albeit some negative, their name is getting out there by the droves... gotta give'm props for that..

I agree. Hopefully this gamble by Nintendo is worth it....

Only plus side:

Conversations with youngsters could go like this:

Mom: "Are you doing your homework?!??"

Kid: "Not at the moment... I had to take a short Wii break!"

Mom: "Uh... OK then."

But... that's about it as far as I can see. :dozey:

BOO!!!

I agree, this is nuts. One can only hope that they will pack in some of whatever the marketing guys were smoking when they came up with this one...

Two points i've seen brought up elsewhere that might rescue this renamed system: One: Treat it like the Powerbook (MacBook Pro? O_o, nonono), and Two: This name might be unpopular (might? pft) but the system itself will still do what it says it will, and sell well. This will lead to people returning to the use of Nintendo as a verb, as in ye olde NES era.

Myself, i'm calling it the Revolution til I die. I predict many sheets of stickers being printed to put over the name-which-shall-not-be-named. If the Revolution name doesn't take, god forbid, i'll be calling it the Nintendo. And if they ask at the store if I mean Gamecube or the filth-to-end-all-filth, i'll just say I want the newer one. If the newer one is still the GC disk, rock on, instant backwards compatibility. (I'm looking at you xbox360 and PS3.)

Wii sucks, Revolution sucked harder, but Nintendo sucks hardest. I thought the gran-pappy of console gaming wouldn't have gone senile this early... I bet the official logo is going to be adorned by hello-kitties, pikachus and all those dumb, "cuddly" things Nintendo makes...

So i have to walk into a shop and ask for a wee?

Then ask if they have any wee games? (in a bad mike myers scottish accent maybe?)

Parent: Hey kid, what would you like for christmas?

Kid: *i want a wee - omg i can't bring my self to say that* I'd like a PS3 please. *grr*

[edit] how come none of those interviews have asked NOE "Why have you named you console after pee?" Surely that is the obvious question?

[edit2] On the other hand... they sure have made Nintendo Go seem like an appealing alternative. Hmmm... though even that has similar problems in that it is messing with the english language structure and can't be used in a correct sounding sentance... not that that is a problem for a lot of kids these days [/grumpy old man mode]

I think they should go with an Apple / MS style i/x prefix and call it the nSomething. nGage would be great... shame its already taken. nGO would work with the right logo. Or nPlay or nGame.

"Just pick it up nPlay"

"Just pick it up nGo"

"Just pick it up nWee" *snigger*

OT, anybody else think this is just a marketing stunt. I really hope it is :(

^Apparantly Nintendo of America had a lot to do with this name.

But the people in both countries aren't liking it.

Wii is one syllable and misspelled, and even if you do get used to saying it properly it doesn't make any sense.

And it doesn't really fit in the family line...

Nintendo

Super Nintendo

Nintendo 64

Nintendo Gamecube

Nintendo Wii (WTF?)

I would have been fine with the Revolution, it's a little long but it made sense, tryed stuff that was really never thought of before. But Wii... I just leaves people scratching their heads.

Also,

Last time I checked, I didn't call the retarded 12 yearold or the middle-aged guy who was hacking and spawn killing or some noob is whining that shooting at him will make him leave,- part of my family when playing online.

And being "Together" is kinda cheesy when you play video games that kill people in very violent ways.
