Fans can look forward to a September filled with classic Star Wars nostalgia, led by the premiere of LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game and the long-awaited DVD release of the original theatrical incarnations of the classic Star Wars trilogy.

In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.

This release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st. International release will follow on or about the same day. Each original theatrical version will feature Dolby 2.0 Surround sound, close-captioning, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish for their U.S. release. International sound and subtitling vary by territory.

"Over the years, a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. "We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we're very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars. Topping it off with a new interactive adventure makes September 12 a red-letter day for Star Wars fans."

That's also the day fans will be able to experience the LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game, the action-packed sequel -- filled with tongue-in-cheek humor -- to one of the best selling video games of 2005. Meh. I know for sure I won't get them. They're limited edition, they will most probably be unavailable in India and they'll be overpriced.

Way to go, Lucasfilms. Woo.

$50 - $60 USD for the whole set, like the Original Trilogy was went it first came out on DVD.

Sweet! I really can't stand Lucas' endless tinkering with the originals. They're classics, and it's great they'll be out there, if only for a limited time. Even if I don't grab them, I know my dad will.

And I'm sorry, but they really should've given David Prowse a shot at being the unarmoured Vader at the end of Jedi. The guy spent three whole movie sweating away in that suit, and they never even used his voice. Give the guy a break...

Boy, you said it. You listening Kurgan? ;)

I've already seen complaints about that. Mainly from those who bitched about not getting them in the first place.

"Oh noes! Lucas is making money! He must be eeeevil!!"

His voice is terrible and I'm sure there's a good reason why he didn't play the "real" Vader.

One does not have to buy it.

That's one of the reasons I didn't understand why they wouldn't release the originals, easy money. This was probably the plan all along, drum up demand, do a limited release and make a bundle. Either way I'm not concerned with what Lucas earns off their release. I'm happy to have digital copies of the originals to go with my updated OT box set.

no, not evil, LUCKY :D SW is a license to print money... remember we all used to think it'd be over after ROTS...

GL needs to finance "Howard the Duck 2"(featuring ahmed best and CGI Howard) somehow :p

Also, why the heck should David Prowse be shown in such an important scene. He wasnt in the suit all the time. He just used to walk around, wave his fists and speak in his ridiculous accent. There was another stunt suit guys who did all the jumping/cool stuff in ESB and ROTJ. If youve seen the docus of Prowse's real voice coming from inside the suit, its no wonder the actors and producers were anxious about how ANH was going to turn out :p He sounded terrible ! BTW, Dave Prowse is dead, so filming such a scene would be impossible anyway...

DAMN THE ADDICTION!

But seriously... I was never really too bothered with Lucas' tinkering with the films - they are *his* after all. The only thing that annoyed me was the change at the end of ROTJ (I'm not going to speak it out loud lest I am consumed by rage). If people want to go out and buy it, it isn't Lucas' fault. As Astrotoy7 said, he got lucky one day when he thought up Star Wars. Somebody has to be rich and famous in this world. If people are whining about this being a way for GL to make money then... they shouldn't buy it.

Prices are different in different countries, and India isn't exactly the richest country in the world. ;)

I won't be getting it, I'm still doing fine with my Special Edition on VHS.

I am just going to sit it out until they release all 6 episodes (hopefully with the updated Trilogy) in a DVD box set. I really don't have any interest in seeing the original versions again. Before its released, I just wish they would take the time to go in update the sabers effects to look more like the prequels.
