Best Villains In the Movies?

Recommended Posts

This is one of those list threads but one that was inspired by a conversation i had with a friend that basically concluded with us saying 'It's more fun to be to be bad the guy'. So it's simple who are the best villains in the history of cinema, They can be from any genra but they do need to have been portrayed in the film as the bad one. We are concentrateing on the film versions so if you liked the book version of Sauron (Lord of the Rings) but thought Christopher Lee's portrayal of the character was a bit weak, don't put Sauron Or if you liked the Ian McKellen Magneto (x-men) but you hate the comic version do put him. I hope that's enougth explanation now on to my list, in no particular order.

Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving), The Matrix: The evil Programme Hell bent on killing Mr Anderson and all life. He also has the ability to copy and paste himself all over the Matrix.

Darth Vader (David Prowse/James Earl Jones), Star Wars: The lightsaber weilding, force empowered Cyborg with the ability to make your hairs stand on end only by breathing.

The Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Serenity: The beleiver who has no misgiving of how evil he is while trying to make a world without sin.

Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff), Blade: The Nightclub owning Vampire with dreams of becoming the Blood God to bring all Humans to their knees.

T-1000 (Robert Patrick), T2: A Robot of few words and made of liquid metal... and he can turn his arms into sharp pointy things.

Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban), The Wrath of Khan: As William Shattner would say "KHHHAAANNN!!!". He's the reason Spock died (but he is technically the reason why he was ressurected aswell, so not all bad).

Magneto/Eric Lensherr (Ian McKellen), X-Men: A Homo-supeior who has seen Humanity at it's worse, now he seeks the domination of all humans under the feet of Mutantkind. He can also rip the bones out of wolverines body if he ever has the inclination, which is pretty cool.

I really liked the Owen Davian character played by Philip Seymour Hoffman in MI-3. He turned what could have been a generic villain into an evil masterpiece. That's not my favorite, but I saw it recently.

Other than him I think Chancellor Palpatine is a great villain.

Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving), The Matrix: The evil Programme Hell bent on killing Mr Anderson and all life. He also has the ability to copy and paste himself all over the Matrix.

Never understood Smith... Is he a programme? Is he real? Are the other agents programmes or real?

The Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Serenity: The beleiver who has no misgiving of how evil he is while trying to make a world without sin.

"Better worlds..."

Great movie, great series, The Operative was alot like the Hands of Blue of Firefly, it would have been cool if Operative had blue hands too maybe.

Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban), The Wrath of Khan: As William Shattner would say "KHHHAAANNN!!!". He's the reason Spock died (but he is technically the reason why he was ressurected aswell, so not all bad).

I liked Dr Tolian Soran from Generations, "They say time is a fire in which we burn."

Smith was a programme, an Agent to be precise. In the end of the first part of the trilogy he was defeated and was supposed to report for deletion, but he didn't. He became a different type of programme, a virus. That's how he managed to copy himself in ''Reloaded''. In the second two parts his motive for wanting to kill Neo was revenge, for not being an Agent anymore.

Best Villans in SciFi Movies:

X-Men: Magneto

Star Trek: Khan

Best Villans in Horror Movies:

Scream: The Killers (They were way out there.)

Final Destination: Death (An unseen villan.)

Best Villans in Other Movies:

In other movies there are complex villans, which stem into more than one. I will have to think about this.

The best villans are those who believe what they are doing is for the greater good, but they suffer through complex cognitions to maintain control, carry out an agenda, and to bring their view of the world to everyone.

When it comes to Agent Smith, his character wasn't complex. He didn't suffer from a series of complex cognition, which allowed his beliefs to waver. His one goal was to regain control over the Matrix, and to see the end of Neo. To be honest, that is pretty dull. Plus you could just shut the computer off, and that will take care of him.

The killers in the whole Sream series were driven by a series of cognitions, which were interwoven by everyone involved. They related and lived upon those who were killed, tantilized to carry out thier goals, and meet the end in a way that gave the viewer and victims justice.

now this is a tough question. hmm, here's a couple of favorites (some of them classics):

Francisco Scaramanga played by Christopher Lee in the 007 classic "The Man With the Golden Gun"

Dr. Otto Octavius played by Alfred Molina in "Spiderman 2"

The Terminator played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie by the same name

Hannibal Lecter played by Anthony Hopkins in the Hannibal movie series

Dalton Russell played by Clive Owen in "Inside Man"

Darth Vader played by David Prowse and voiced by James Earl Jones

honorable mention (only because he becomes a good-guy in the end):

Richard B. Riddick played by Vin Diesel in "Pitch Black"

Well if we are going to talk about the 007 world we have to mention Bonds ultimate Nemesis.

Blofeld (Anthony Dawson/Donald Pleasence/Telly Savalas/Charles Gray), Early Bond films: The Classic megalomaniac with a white Cat.

Yes, the Witch King of Angmar from LoTR ROTK and Dr. Octopus from Spiderman 2 were both great villains. One more is that kid (I can't remember his name at the moment) from Sin City, played by Elijah Wood. Man, that was really sick and creepy.

Have to go with Vader as the #1. Palpatine gets a close second, "What the hell's an Aluminium Falcon?!"

I usually like movies with the antihero thing--

Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho

Eric Bana as Mark "Chopper" Read in Chopper

Michael Caine as Jack Carter in Get Carter

Gotta give major props to Anthony Hopkins for Hannibal Lector though. Definitely one of the most chilling baddies ever. Though an underrated but personal favourite is Brad Pitt as Jeffery Goile in 12 Monkeys. He's a lot better in his unhinged, weirdo roles. That, and my cousin once kicked him in the head. Seriously.

Christopher Lee has had some great roles, but he's had his duds. From the wicked Saruman to the neutered Count Dooku--that was hard to take. And I though his Count Whatshisface in the Wicker Man was so overrated it's not funny.

Give some love to the bad guy critters of the movies, though--

Giger's aliens in the Alien Series

The Predator

The Plant in Little Shop of Horrors

Gremlins

Zombies in Dawn of the Dead

well, Blofeld was your basic Kingpin type character. yes, he was a very important bad guy, but he was a bit of a 'cut from the mold' type character. Scaramanga, on the other hand, was really James Bond as an independant assassin. its really what made that movie such a great movie was seeing those two characters set against each other. that and Christopher Lee did a fantastic job of making that part as good as it was.

C'mon, who was more evil than Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon?

Runner's up are:

Darth Vader, Star Wars, episodeIV.

Sauron, LOTR

Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) from Conan the Barbarian.

Han the proprietor of Han's tournament. A Shaolin master turned evil in Enter the Dragon.

How about Cyberdyne Systems model 101? No conscience, just kill.

...and no one's heart is more black than nurse Ratchett.

(One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest)
