woogiee
im sitting in my room at my computer around 2 pm when all of the sudden i hear a wierd noise. it sounds like crinkling (sp?) paper. i have a stac of magazines lying next to my desk, so naturally that was the first place i looked. i lean over to check to see if anyhitng is moving and the noise stops, i sit back up and it starts again. after doing that over and over about 5-6 times i look up at my cieling to see the plaster slowly breaking apart and coming down on me. now i a 3 ft by 5 ft hole in my ceiling with 2 trash bags taped over it until tomorrow when i fix it. i had to take everything out of my room as the plaster had covered everything in it. had to vacuum out my pc, stereo receiver, and xbox 360, and only just got my pc set back up so i didnt die of boreom before falling asllep tonight. today was not my day

The Doctor
Check the plumbing, before you patch the hole. If it's water damage, then it'll just happen again.
RC-1162
mix some superglue with the paint so it doesnt occur again anyway, im really sorry for you. especially when you have an X Box
HerbieZ
That sucks. We have a huge crack running through our house where the thing is splitting in two. You can put your fingers in the gap and see light outside
Char Ell
I second all those that said check for the hole's cause before you patch it. Make sure you don't have something else going on because if you don't and it happens again things might not turn out as well. Just my two bits. Good luck! stingerhs
something else to check for would be mold. where there's a dark space, such as a ceiling or attic, and moisture, there's mold. at least that's pretty much the way it is here in Southeast, USA. last time i checked, though, its not a regional problem. REDJOHNNYMIKE
If you live in an apartment building my first guess would be newlyweds. Of course water or something else could be possible. Is water leaking down? Was your ceiling ever discolored before it cracked? Does anyone live upstairs? (hippies love attics ya know;)) Do you have any other utilities running through your ceiling? (water heating pipes can hammer, but you'd probably have noticed that already) Does your house shift/settle often? Do you live near anything that causes heavy vibrations? Does the framing in your ceiling have any wierd marks in it? Stinger mentioned mold, but an infestation could be possible as well. Don't know what else might cause it. Have a handyman or professional look at it. @Herbie, I'd suggest buying one our fine "slightly used" houses, or lots of caulk and duct tape:xp:

You can put your fingers in the gap and see light outside You might just wanna check that.... from what I knoe thats a problem with the house's foundation.... can be a big problem if not fixed (ur house could *literally* split in two).... just my advice... lukeiamyourdad
last time i checked, though, its not a regional problem. Not a regional problem, more of a problem with how our houses in North America are made. Mold is very dangerous and can cause various health problems. stingerhs
^^^^ primarily wood and nails. usually, the framing consists of 1.5" x3.5" studs (technical term: 2x4). sheetrock then covers the framing. i forget the type of stone it is, but its the same stone used for making chalk. i remember somebody explaining to me a while back as to what about our homes makes mold and mildew such a problem, but i just don't remember the actual explanation. basically, i do understand that darkness plus moisture breeds mold. the actual mold isn't what hurts you: the spores it puts out to spread usually gets everywhere in the house. its those spores that cause all the problems. woogiee
thanks for all the advice everyone, its appreciated. luckily it wasnt water damage, an infestation, or hippies in the attic, sadly it was poor craftmanship by the people who built the house. the plaster seemed to have just started falling off the rafters and onto me. another good thing is 2 of my uncles have fixed stuff like this in current and previous jobs, so they were able to stop by yesterday and later today to help me fix it up. i had to tear down half the ceiling and put up sheet rock. all thats left now is platering the edges then painting it. hopefully i can get most of my stuff back into my room too, its getting kinda crowded in the apartment
Boba Rhett
Wait, was there not sheet rock up before? o_O Make sure you use 5/8ths sheetrock on the ceiling.
Char Ell
@ woogiee - Are you renting or do you own your residence? Cuz if you're renting then it should be your landlord taking care of your ceiling problem... If you live in an apartment building my first guess would be newlyweds. I'm sure woogiee would have noticed that...
woogiee
yea there was sheet rock up before, but alot came loose when it fell, so it had to be replaced. I rent, and my landlord never got back to me, and generally does crap jobs on anything.
Char Ell
^^^ Aw man, that bites the big one. You should talk to your landlord and work out an arrangement so you can deduct the cost of the repairs from your rent.
Jae Onasi
yea there was sheet rock up before, but alot came loose when it fell, so it had to be replaced. I rent, and my landlord never got back to me, and generally does crap jobs on anything. That's very likely a safety issue and your landlord is in violation of goodness knows how many codes. Google "Tenant's rights" plus your state (province, country), and you will be able to find out your rights. Don't just deduct the money from the rent without something in writing--he could come back on you for non-payment of rent and you would have zero recourse. If he's being a total turd, go through the courts to put your rent in escrow until he fixes the place. Keep copies of all receipts. Take pictures of damage and what you did to fix it so you don't get your deposit taken away, either. Lastly, if you can, find a different apartment and definitely a different landlord. If you are living near a college/university, try moving farther away from the campus if possible. You don't have to go too far to get away from the campus landlord sharks. REDJOHNNYMIKE
@Stinger, SHHHHHHHHH! You can't reveal the secret of the 2X4, it's a violation of Man-Law and several contractor codes:lol: Humidity will bring mold. I've got wicked allergies from living in a basement that flooded whenever it rained.
Jae Onasi
@Stinger, SHHHHHHHHH! You can't reveal the secret of the 2X4, it's a violation of Man-Law and several contractor codes:lol: Too late, Jimbo already inducted this girl into the Secret Manly Society of Construction and DITY Projects as an honorary member--earned it after I had to replace the kitchen faucet while I had the flu and Jimbo was still away on active duty. I never realized that membership in this Society involved so much sitting around drinking Diet Pepsi or beer (depending on age). Humidity will bring mold. I've got wicked allergies from living in a basement that flooded whenever it rained. A dilute solution of bleach water (I believe 10%, but I'd have to double check that to be sure) does a great job of disinfecting things and killing mold. Make sure to use gloves because it'll irritate your hands, and don't wear any clothes that you don't want ruined. And use eye protection.

REDJOHNNYMIKE
@Jae, It's not a law that prevents women from learning construction facts, it's designed to protect trade secrets and keep our work profitable. It's not female exclusive, just an agreed upon statute which happens to be recorded in Man-Law:) Personally I'd like more girls on the job:D and a little less of my mom and sister Don't live there anymore, but I do have to clean up bathrooms on remodel jobs, takes a lot of bleach and cleaning stuff. I get it on me all the time, you get used to it;)
