  1. 1. Which console?

I'm not sure if I'll bother to buy any next-gen console... but the 2 that interest me the most are the Wii and PS3.

Of the 2 of them I'm really most interested in seeing the PS3 in action... though I suspect I might end up with a Wii in the end. The Wii looks amazing, but I'm really trying to reserve judgment until all 3 are on the market and I can do an in-person head-to-head comparison of features and titles.

The PS3 price still doesn't seem all that outrageous to me... considering you get a Blu-Ray player in the price (seeing as the stand alone Blu-Ray players are still up around $1K American.) It's a little high,.. but I can easily see spending 2 or 3 times (or more!) as much buying a PC with all the latest, greatest hardware to play games on as well without ever batting an eye about it. Why not get a console for games, and a cheaper PC for internet/ email/ office functions? That combo even might work out to be cheaper than a "Gaming" PC...

Still, until I can try them all, I won't truly know for sure if I even want any of them.

About the whole Bluray issue... I've already talked about this in a thread in The Swamp... the Bluray capability the PS3 has will matter jack all when it comes to movies, etc since DVD is still going VERY strong and there are no Bluray discs to be seen on store shelves. Sony will definately try to push for the standard but it's a different method than the PS2/DVD success. DVD was already successful, the PS2 just took advantage of the trend. With the PS3 Sony will have to create the trend themselves and get as many nongaming Bluray discs out there if they want to see it flourish.

And take into account that thePS3 will be a first generation Bluray player, it will become inferior to what you will get in the future if Bluray does take off.

The only real advantage Bluray has for the PS3 is the fact that you're gonna have plenty of room to screw around with for games compared to the Xbox360.

The first Blu-ray titles are scheduled to hit shelves this week. More entertainment companies are backing Blu-ray than HD-DVD, it's far from just Sony, so I think Blu-ray really stands a fighting chance.

As far as it being a first gen player... well, so what? After the tech has been around a while, the prices will come way down, and I could (and probably will) buy a additional player (and maybe burner) or 2 down the road anyways. I currently have 5 DVD players in the house at the moment (2 stand-alones, 2 in PCs [1 a burner,] and one built into the TV.)

Right now none of my TVs are fully HD capable anyways... I'll need to upgrade additional hardware in order to take full advantage of it, so it's all kind of a moot point at the moment.

Again, when I see them side-by-side I might just say "The heck with it..." and not get any of them. Or get the Wii just to have around for those times that realtives with kids visit.

I honestly haven't been doing all that much gaming recently, anyway. And at that, most of my gaming time has been spent playing ports of old arcade games from my youth (Tempest, Pac-Man, Defender, Joust, Galaxian... ) And those hardly take state-of-the-art equipment to play. My cell phone probably has better specs than those old game machines probably had. ;)

Maybe I'll just take the money and get a new guitar and/or amp, or upgrade my pedalboard.

@Herbie, You really should check with some people who use Alienwares. I play Counterstrike, Day of Defeat, and other MP games on 16 different AWs and they're allways having problems (screen tears, audio issues, excessive load times[2-5 mins to load Call of Duty 2 menu], etc.). They go from insanely fast to lockdown in a hurry.

The way I see the consoles...

XBOX 360... It exists. There are great games out for it. Buy it now.

wiiRevolution... Seems to be the most revolutionary. It's cheap. Buy it with the chump change you've saved up since your 360 purchase.

PS3... Long term processing power advantage. $ = Arm + Leg. Play 360 and wii for a couple years until the price drops. Buy the games, the early PS3ers raved about when you were waiting, when they come down in price.

I won an X-Box 360 a couple of weeks back (I know I'm a Lucky B... Bloke) anyway it's got great graphics but all the games seem to be a hit or a miss. The main problem with the console at the moment is that all but a few games are on the current gen consoles anyway and are about 60% of the price compared to the RRP of the 360 versions.

But i think it can only get better as the prices will drop and we'll get some more 360 only titles (like Halo 3).

I am getting the Wii. No question. Have you guys seen the stuff about the first-person shooter game for the Wii, called Red Steel? AWESOME. You can use the controller as a sword, etc. Just great gameplay.

@Bob Lion: I agree wholeheartedly. Zelda, at least to me, is one of the best game franchises in game history. And I think you may be right about Nintendo planning this for years.

The 360 is really nothing new, other than the graphics and online stuff. It's still button mashing gaemplay. Same with the PS3. And the PS3 logo is a ripoff of the Spiderman logog.

Actually the version shown at E3 was said to have very disappointing gameplay, however recent claims by a magazine, which I forgot the name of right now, has said that Ubisoft has GREATLY improved the gameplay over the E3 version. I really do hope that it turns out to be a really kickass game cause it's a perfect concept for Wii for the more experienced gamer.

I saw some footage of a playtest, and I couldn't tell wether it was the system or the game that seemed wonky. From watching the gamer (and their descriptions of it) you couldn't really swing a sword the way you naturally would, you just flick the controller around with your wrist.

If I was going to by a wii and a sword fighting game, I'd want to be able to do awesomely massive sword fighting moves while playing, which would be much less embarassing than rotating a remote while shouting battlecries:lol:

So my question is wether it's a game limitation or a system controller limitation.

I hope it isn't the latter, because freedom of movement would be the whole point of having it in the first place.

*daydreams about super smash bros. with included scaffolding*

Well, I would think (read hope) most games should have the option of setting the senstivity of the Wiimote. Actually, it would be better if it was set by the system itself or in a user profile. If you want to just sit back and flick your wrist, then you could set the sensitivity high. If you wanted to pretend the remote was a sword, then you would set the sensitivity low.

Kinda like you set the sensitivity of a mouse.

Depends on if the game needs sensitivity, according to Nintendo the Wiimote doesn't need to be "tuned" in any way, however I would think that an FPS game would feature that kind of option. I do know that Retro Studios will be including a sensitivity option for Metroid Prime 3 Corruption.
