Based on this, my own experience, and thousands of other experiences made by other people, it's very, very safe to say Americans have some exceedingly lacking World Social Studies curricula, yes. Whether that qualifies as idiocy or not is up to you to determine - I'd say no.

 

There was a serious study done that showed that 11% of young Americans (18 to 20-something) can't find the USA on the map. There was a kid in my class in Houston who asked if Hitler was still in power. There was another one who didn't know we were Russia's allies, and yet another one couldn't find Russia on the map, search throughoutly as she did all of Europe, Africa, and the Americas (she was on her way to the right continent when I pointed out the location of our budds the Russians out to her).
