The Doctor
Alright. So I'm sitting at the computer, browing through the forums, and my MSN drops out. I sigh, since this keeps happening a lot lately, and go to sign in again. I can't. It says it can't retrieve my contact list. No biggy - it's done that before, too. So I reboot, which usually fixes this problem. When i get back, MSN still isn't working. On top of that, Firefox seems to have re-set itself. Completely. My homepage had been re-set to the Firefox Google thing, and my bookmarks were all gone. So my question is: How could this have happened? I mean the part about Firefox - I could care less about fixing MSN. I haven't been impressed with it at all lately. Live Messenger blows. Hard. Speaking of my current IM being ****... is there any other IM program I could use that lets me talk to people signed on to the .Net Passport thing? I have GAIM, but... I don't like it that much. I can't even close the main window, or it signs me out - that irritates me to no end. I would also prefer something that lets me set up a display pic and use the standard MSN emots, at the very least - the ability to set up my own doesn't really matter to me. Can anyone help me with either problem?
Davinq
Not really, since I had no interest in the MSN beta, and deleted the e-mail. Can't help you here Doctor, but I'll offer my sympathy. But on the firefox thing... The same thing happened to me too! No idea what to do, really.

Maverick5770
Well, as for another .net passport IM, I believe google talk uses the .net passport. I can't help you with Firefox, I hate that browser, almost as much as Netscape.
Jeff
The new beta version of gaim fixes the msn problem, I had the same problem on my windows machine, everybody did apparently.
stoffe
On top of that, Firefox seems to have re-set itself. Completely. My homepage had been re-set to the Firefox Google thing, and my bookmarks were all gone. No idea why it happened, I've never lost any settings with Firefox. However you can check to see if the bookmarks file backups still are intact. On your harddrive, browse to: C:\Documents and Settings\<YourLogin>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<lettercombo>.default There should be a folder called bookmarkbackups there containing backup copies of your bookmarks.html file for 5 days back. If you can find a good one there you can move it back out of the folder and rename it to bookmarks.html. If it's not there then your whole profile might have been deleted for some reason. Never had something like that happen so I don't know why. Are you using the latest version? Any extensions?
Char Ell
Could it have been an automatic Firefox update that reset your browser? I got the 1.5.0.7 update recently. Of course I didn't lose any bookmarks or any other of my Firefox configuration. Also, I use Trillian for what little IM'ing I do. I use it on the MSN and AIM/ICQ networks and it works fine for me but like I said I'm not a heavy user by any stretch.

Negative Sun
IE rules, don't like IE 7 though, conflicts with my windows blinds thing...just use IE is my advice, it's been good and stable for me for several years now, never had too many problems with it... MSN sucks, but you can't live without it, well I can't...That Beta has been behaving quite well for me though... Alternatively, Try that Trillian program, I used to have it and it was quite good I think... Download it HERE

ChAiNz.2da
@The Doctor, you can probably import your MSN bookmarks with FireFox if stoffe's suggestion doesn't work out for you. However it is odd that it just "reset" itself. Is your homepage set to FireFox's site.. or was it just the splash page that states that FireFox has just updated itself? Well that depends...It's okay if you just check your email now and then and browse youtube for example. But for porn it's a no no. I also use Firefox because I'm against the Microsoft monopoly in the computer world. (and yes I do use MSN Messenger though )

Diego Varen
Yeah, why is IE terrible? I used to have an Avatar with the logo. Besides, every Computer I've used has it on the Hard Drive.
Pho3nix
Yeah, why is IE terrible? I used to have an Avatar with the logo. Besides, every Computer I've used has it on the Hard Drive. Maybe that's because every computer you've used has had Windows as OS? Anyways I blame it on poor marketing, if Mozilla would advertise more and target different companies who mainly use office staff, maybe more people would start to use alternatives to Windows' own software. Negative Sun
Yeah, but how is that Microsoft's fault that other companies can't do marketing properly? Face it, the reason Microsoft is the leading brand is because it delivers what people want, affordable and reliable hardware and software, what more can you ask for? stoffe
And why is Firefox so much better, besides the fact that it's not IE? Personally I prefer Firefox rather than Internet Explorer for these reasons: No annoying popup windows, haven't seen a single one in more than a year. Being able to make annoying Flash banners go away with a mouseclick. Similarily, being able to block annoying images with a mouseclick (like those rapidly blinking avatars some forum members seem so fond of). Being able to easily block cookies for certain sites, while allowing it for others. Tabbed browsing, having 12+ IE windows open was driving me (almost) mad. More useful/easier to use search, bookmark and history functions. Allows you to tweak more settings to fine tune things to your liking (by typing about:config in the address field) At least those are the largest reasons I can think of now. Some of these not so important, even though they make a difference. Some I can't do without now that I've gotten used to them (the popup/flash banner blocking and tabs mostly).
