Arreat Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 At least, that's what scientists think. In April of 2029, they thought, there was a good chance that an asteroid the size of the Rose Bowl would collide with Earth. In fact, the date was April 13, or Friday the 13th, of that year. However, they now know it's going to miss, but will go in between the Earth and Moon. Talk about "near miss." It will, according to Nova, be closer to Earth than many of our own manmade satellites are at that time. However, in 2036, seven years later, the asteroid (named Apothus) will return. And scientists now know that if it goes through a particular stretch of space which they've named "the keyhole" on its first trip near earth in 2029, that in seven years it will return and strike the Earth. They even know where it would hit - the Pacific Ocean. You can watch the segment from Nova here.
Dagobahn Eagle Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Didn't an asteroid go between Earth and the Moon already only a few years ago? That is slightly spooky. Oh well, let's begin laying mine-fields between Earth and the Moon so that it doesn't survive to return for a second pass.
generalvaklu321 Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 I thought the Mayans said an asteriod would hit in 2012? Good, i prefer 2036, by then they will have made another KOTOR (hopefully)
Elijah Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Dude, everyone knows it TOM CRUIZE who will save the world.... sheesh.
Davinq Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 I thought the Mayans said an asteriod would hit in 2012? Good, i prefer 2036, by then they will have made another KOTOR. (hopefully) But yeah... Outer space rocks scare me. Especially the ones with the giant worms in them.
Arreat Posted October 4, 2006 Author Posted October 4, 2006 Dude, everyone knows it TOM CRUIZE who will save the world.... sheesh. Wrong, Bruce Willis will, again.
Samnmax221 Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Must have have as much sex as possible from now on, Chase what are you doing tommorow?
Writer Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Bruce Willis will save us from evil asteroid but where will Elijah Wood fit into alll of this? He'll wear a perpetually sad (and sometimes angry) face and murmur about the burden being too great
TiE23 Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Who knows. With the thing flying so close they may plant a nuke or two on it just incase.
Samnmax221 Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Who knows. With the thing flying so close they may plant a nuke or two on it just incase. They talked about this on 20/20 a month ago, blowing it up is the last thing we want to do. Unless of course we rigged it to blow on the other end of its orbit.
Det. Bart Lasiter Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 I SHALL DESTROY IT WITH MY MIND POWERS.

Tinny Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Wouldn't blowing it up be bad but better than having a big chunk hit us?
TiE23 Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Better than nothing Tinny. Anyway, seeya then babes.
The Seeker Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 There's no problem that can't be solved with the use of high explosives.
CapNColostomy Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Right now they're working on a spacecraft that can fly close enough to the asteroid to change its course using the gravity generated by said spacecraft. Best of luck with that. I don't think I'll stop smoking afterall.
MrWally Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 I thought the Mayans said an asteriod would hit in 2012? Good, i prefer 2036, by then they will have made another KOTOR (hopefully) In fact, it's December 23rd 2012. We won't even get a Christmas!!!
Elijah Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Wouldn't blowing it up be bad but better than having a big chunk hit us? Im assuming its the same effect as a shotgun vs a gun that shoots a solid bullet... Shotguns do a whole lote more damage
MagnaGuard Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 True, but if we use an explosive powerful enough, the blast may alter the asteroids momentum sending any remaining pieces in the other direction. Actually, a disintigration beam would be much better than a big explosive device, considering all that will remain of the big rock is little pile of dust.
BongoBob Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 If they were able to blow it into small enough pieces, a good amount of it would burn up in the atmoshphere.
MrWally Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 But they'd have to be REALLY small pieces. Or else you'd have flaming balls of fire reigning down on earth..... ...Actually, that'd be effing sweet. Except for the dying part.
generalvaklu321 Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 In fact, it's December 23rd 2012. We won't even get a Christmas!!! *Gasp* Will we Ramadan?
