The Expanded Universe Novels

There've been a few threads about this, but I'll stick to my recommendation of the Thrawn trilogy. Legacy looks pretty good too, though I've not had a chance to read it.

Oh, no matter what you hear, do NOT read the NJO series. :xp:

Agreed. Ever since I heard of the untimely demise of a certain major character, I decided that NJO was certainly NOT canon in MY Star Wars universe! :swear:

[nitpick clarification]The name "Legacy" is actually the name of the comic series that occurs 130 ABY, and "Legacy of the Force" is the latest novel series with the Big 3. Just to avoid confusion.[/nitpick clarification]

K, thanks guys. I'll look into finding Heir to the Empire next time I'm out of my little good for nothing town. I have to travel 45 minutes to get to any store worth my while. LoL

No you don't, you have to travel here and get a cheap copy delivered within two days!!!

Only trust sellers with more than 90% positive rating though...

I have been ordering books on amazon for ages now, and it's never let me down, good reading copies and fast deliveries, that's all you need!

Trust me it's much better than going to a store only to find out they don't have it, and if they do they'll charge you a fortune for it!

I agree that you should start with the Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn (or his Outbound Flight), then the Hand of Thrawn duology and then...

They're both worth reading, you nitpicker. :p

The Vong I think are an extremely cool idea, but Star Wars was the wrong science fiction to introduce them to. Go watch ANH, and ask yourself if a race of Force-immune, organ-grafting, world brain-implanting, animal-using, crab-wearing, planet-terraforming masochists are true to Star Wars. :xp:

I'm interested in reading all the novels eventually, but I can't figure out where to start. -meep-
I experienced this dilemma as well. :) I started out with the Thrawn Trilogy, Splinter of the Mind's Eye and then read I, Jedi. Then I decided I wanted to read the novels in the chronological order in which they occurred in the SW universe starting with the prequels. So I bought and read Cloak of Deception, Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, and The Phantom Menace novelization. Now I'm reading Rogue Planet.

What I've found thus far is that the novels written before or even during the time when the prequel movies were released are of a different flavor than ones written later, say after 2000. For example, the concept of Jedi marriage in I, Jedi doesn't exactly jive with the same concept as portrayed in AOTC and ROTS. Considering that I, Jedi was released in June, 1999 then perhaps Michael Stackpole didn't have access to the AOTC script since the movie wasn't released until 2002. In other words, SW authors that wrote books prior to the release of the prequels probably didn't have access to the different facets of SW lore that GL developed for the prequels and it shows in their writing.

In any case, I recommend all of the books I've read thus far with the exception of Splinter of the Mind's Eye.
