ChAiNz.2da
GENEVA, Switzerland (AP) -- A global competition to name the new seven wonders of the world is attracting widespread interest, with more than 20 million people voting so far, organizers say. Source Vote for your choices here: http://www.new7wonders.com/ Pretty interesting little read, and a nice list of candidates (21). It does require e-mail or phone registration in order to vote, but if you want to be a little piece of 'history' (whether it's officially acknowledged or not we'll see ).... I voted for mine

Jae Onasi
Hmph. The list seems to be incomplete. I'm not on it. And neither is LucasForums. Or Ahto. Or the Hotel Asylum. That's because Hotel Asylum is in a class all by itself.

Emperor Devon
A few things were excluded, but there was a pretty good selection. I ended up voting for the Colosseum, Eiffel Tower, Hagia Sophia, Kremlin, Petra and Taj Mahal. Thanks for the link, ChAiNz!

Darth InSidious
Just out of curiosity, how come so many of you put ancient wonders in your lists? I'm not attempting to do down their importance, but I thought this was about wonders from the last 2,000 years...? I'm also just a tad bit annoyed that some modern wonders have been left off to make room for them. St. Peter's Basilica, for example, springs to mind. Or Nelson's Column. Or the Empire State Building or Notre Dame, as jimbo mentioned, or Tiananmen Square, or the Forbiden Palace or a whole lot of other things worthy of the list. I think there was a much wider list, perhaps the UN Heritage Sites list which was toned down by an earlier series of votes, or something. While I agree a lot of modern structures deserve to be up there, I don't think that the Notre Dame or the Empire State Building are really worth it. Look at it this way - Thousands of people worked for several years to create masterpieces like the Pyramids, or the Acropolis, or Chichen Itza. The more modern structures seem to be made with far more ease. While the visual impact on the viewer does matter, the wonder itself and its construction are a very important deciding factor. Darth InSidious
I don't deny that. But I do question why the Pyramids should be in both lists. Also, I thought this was a list of the seven wonders of the modern[/i] world?

Sabretooth
Yay, five of mine came up too. Honestly, I don't support the whole Taj Mahal thing. There was heavy lobbying going on here with mobile companies sending slogans like "send an sms! support the taj!" There was stuff with words like "national heritage" and "respect for the nation" and all that crap. Every SMS made a vote in the big place, and that's completely illegal, coz you can vote as many times as you like. Also, the Taj was out of the top 7 about a month ago, which is around the time all the campaigns start. Greedy *******s. And I don't like the idea of 7 Wonders anymore either. In the ancient world, people knew only 7 Wonders, and hence the thing popped up. In the modern world, there are hundreds of wonders. 7 is a ridiculously small figure. Astrotoy7
I agree in most part with the final 7, except the 'big Jesus'.... No one even mentioned any of the remarakable Buddha statues in China, Thailand, Japan etc... Im glad the Hagia Sophia and stonehenge got a mention... My vote would have gone for Stonehenge, and Sultan Ahmet Camiisi, or "The Blue Mosque" to you dullard westerners(see pic). Ive been to Hagia Sophia and Sultan Ahmet, both are amazing feats of architecture, and repositories of Christian and Islamic art and artifacts. The Hagia Sophia was of course built by the Byzantines, the Sultan Ahmet by the Osmanli Turks. mtfbwya
Commander Obi-Wan
^ no image Petra, Jordan... wasn't that the place that appeared in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? I wasn't surprised by many of the other choices, most of those listed should be there.

Jae Onasi
Cool. I've seen one of the 7 wonders then, Chichen Itza. BTW, it's not pronounced in a way that rhymes with 'chicken pizza'. The accent's on the second syllable, Chi-CHEN It-ZAH. Your Mayan/Mexican trivia for the day. Now I want to see the other 6 wonders, and the runners-up, too--all of them look like great places to visit. Totenkopf, no matter how 'realistic' they want to make them, the men still always look fake.

Im glad you are learned enough to know that Jae. 100% of the Americans in our tour group last year were calling the pyramid the "Temple of Kukulkan"....which is how it is listed in many US travel guides. Our Mayan guide was visibly grinding his teeth mtfbwya
