Jae Onasi Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 You can taste without smelling, but not nearly as well.
tk102 Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 I have don't have a very good sense of smell so I guess I could do without it. I have fresh batteries in my smoke detectors. Sidenote: I feel like I got tricked into reading this thread. In the future could you please use a more descriptive thread title (Forum rule 10c).
Windu Chi Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 You can taste without smelling, but not nearly as well. Do you know of anybody or ever seen medical evidence of anybody born with no smelling ability, Jae? I'm just asking you a question I'm not being a smart-ass, here, Jae
Jae Onasi Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Do you know of anybody or ever seen medical evidence of anybody born with no smelling ability, Jae? I'm just asking you a question I'm not being a smart-ass, here, Jae Kallman syndrome. Loss of smell does happen with some frequency after certain brain surgeries, head or facial injuries, or with certain tumors or Alzheimer's, because the Olfactory nerve (cranial nerve I) gets damaged. Anything that can affect the brain can affect the olfactory nerve, and if that nerve (or pair of nerves, to be precise) doesn't work, we don't have a sense of smell.

I really, I'm not kidding, I really appreciate it, Jae.
lukeiamyourdad Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Smell. I just went to the Duc de Lorraine which is a bakery near my university. Had a tiny custard pie with raspberry for 3.71$. Costs an arm, but damn, it's like an orgasm in your mouth...no it's even better. I can't live without good food. Just shoot me then.
Darth333 Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Smell. I just went to the Duc de Lorraine which is a bakery near my university. Had a tiny custard pie with raspberry for 3.71$. Costs an arm, but damn, it's like an orgasm in your mouth...no it's even better. you forgot the tax btw! Unless you are like me and buy six units instead of one ...hehe I used to go there too when I was in that area... I voted taste earlier today but now you just convinced me thatit was a mistake...so I change my vote to smell! (assuming that for the purpose of this thread you can loose smell without loosing taste ) ...now this post just makes me remember that I have to stop at Première Moisson on my way home...they have great pastries too. I shouldn't have voted taste
Jae Onasi Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 I wish I could get some good pain chocolat down here. I got very spoiled in France. Yumm! @Godslayer below--I could have done without the sense of smell while my kids were babies. Whew! I'll never understand how something that small can create an odor that big.
Negative Sun Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 France is great for everything but the French... I voted smell, some things smell good, but most don't really, i could totally do without it...
St. Jimmy Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 If I could lose smell without ditching taste, Smell. While it can be important (especially in the military) It's probably the least vital/pleasurable.
Commander Obi-Wan Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 You can't taste with out smell. According to a student teacher, who has no smell, so he doesn't taste anything. I can't live with out taste, since the tastes of some foods are irrestible. I am not obese, btw, so I have no worries of getting overweight. If I can't see, then I can not watch movies, use the computer, or play some sports. It's just nice to see. Touching, well, I just can't picture what that would be like, so NO. That leaves hearing, which I like, but that's what I would like the least of the chooses given. So, basically what Achilles said.
milo Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 I'd choose smell. There aren't any scents worth giving up any of the other senses for. I'm surprised some people could go without taste. Food would become extremely boring. It would work wonders for the obese.
Darth InSidious Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Hmm...On second thoughts, I'd get rid of my extremely erratic and very useless precognition...
Rabish Bini Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Smell isn't only connected to taste. It's also connected to memory. (Even though it's not a sense) And sight is also connected to taste. If you want to know how, just ask.
HerbieZ Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Hmm...On second thoughts, I'd get rid of my extremely erratic and very useless precognition... Saturday night's Lotto numbers and i won't take no for an answer.
Jason Skywalker Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 @HerbieZ--LOOL, Lil' Herbie. yeah, that little kid all those beautiful, grown up women ditch. @AkumaSF--I'm asking, so say please. @Darth InSidious--Yeah, EuroMillions numbers please.
Darth InSidious Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 ^Ha! If only...How about somewhere you might visit in the next six months?
Jason Skywalker Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Hum, that's a good prediction Herbie, hope it's a future girlfriend. But let's stray off the topic and onto it's topic...
