@TK: Are you *sure*?

I'm certain. If you look at this mod, most all of the material that appears, if not all of it, has been made by various authors and is already available for download if you search on the major file sites (PCGM, JK3Files, LucasFiles, etc.)

If he has their permission...

He might has permission for SOME of the stuff... but considering the vast amount of material he is using, it's hard to believe that he would have permission from EVERY author whose material he is using. A lot of pro modders in the JA community think that what this guy is going is unacceptable. Just look at the credits page on his site. Not a single author credited for their material.

Or if he has recreated their work without reusing their stuff...

That's certainly not what he's doing. I can recognize most all of this stuff just looking at screenshots.

If you read the page at the back, there's actually not that many people to gain permission from - it seems to be largely drawn from a limited number of people - furthermore, he may well have got permission from everyone - assumptions like that are unhelpful and only spread misinformation. Fact is, you don't know he doesn't have permission, and if he doesn't, I suggest you ask him about that :)

What are they gonna do sue him for making a mod that pwns?

No, but they will scream at him, for stealing their work.

It is highly unethical for someone to steal stuff (mostly because if everyone can steal other people's work, there is no incentive to actually make anything). Even if one can make a point that he didn't make the mod, he just steal from everyone else who made that mod that pwns.

Don't worry, I wouldn't be suprised if they DID get premission. And if they didn't, they deserve the screaming, since it would be quite easy to gain premission.

Even when this mod was starting off in 2003, there were already concerns over the legality and ethics behind it. A quick Google search of "kotf permission" comes across numerous discussions on different forums regarding the issue.

Well, if I create a Vader model, and another guy creates a Vader model, I think they'll look somewhat similar. I mean, modelling characters that have already been featured in movies is not like you have to apply your creativity and make up new stuff. There is only Vader after all.

Guy admitted that he "compiled" all the other mods together to make this uber-mod. My respect for this mod has dropped...very considerbly. If I had JKA, I'll download it, but I will state that it is not HE who made the mod, but rather, the Modding Community. Oh, and here's a quote from someone that adequately explain my position.

I don't post here much, but my fellow Massassians brought this to my attention, so I felt that I should post this.

TimFX. You can't just take other peoples' work without their permission... let me make an analogy. What you're doing is basically similar to ripping off Shakesphere... anyone in this community can tell you're doing it. Now, the way I see it, you have four options:

You can contact each and every one of the authors, asking for explicit permission to use their material in your game. Then, their name should appear in-game somewhere in a credits listing, or near the material they allowed you to use. If an author says "No", (which many might, seeing as you tried to pass off all this as your work in the very first post, and didn't admit it until confronted with the fact), you remove their material from your mod. I suspect from what I already heard you don't want to do this.

You remove ALL material not made by yourself, and make something yourself. I suspect you don't want to do this either.

Publish this without any changes, permantly losing all respect from anyone who downloads it, and having it immediately removed from all download locations by various people, including gothicX and maybe myself. You would also be permabanned from anywhere you posted it. This SEEMS to be the path you have been on...

Drop the whole thing. Somehow I don't think you want this one...

The choice is yours.

It common sense. If people are allowed to claim other people's intellecutal property, I have no incentive to actually make intellectual property. Growth stagants.

All I know about KotF is that most of the work isn't his own (so, in essence, what's all the hype about?) and the author has actively reaped profits from this mod, which is illegal. Due to such behaviors, I certainly won't be supporting this mod.

In that case, there is no excuse for what this guy is doing, and while it might take a while longer, I'd rather download the files individually.

I agree, its a shame he didn't just go and get permission really. But I won't download it out of principle especially if hes making a profit out of other mods work, which quite a side from being illegal seems quite un-ethical. Are LA not at all fussed about what hes doing considering he's been making profits?

Some models specifically are very distinguished, like HapSlash's Stormtrooper. And maps are also very recognizable, because very rarely is a map almost identical to another author's map.

What's that all about then?

While it's good to give the credits to the authors in the readme files, very few people read those documents anyway. That's why it's required to get the permission of the author to use their material. Maybe some of you wouldn't mind a skin or a mini-mod that you might make for a game to be used at will by other people, but the thing is, it's really disrespectful to these authors who make absolutely breathtaking pieces of work, like the detailed models and maps that are being used in KotF, to just claim it in your mod as part of your work. Especially when people don't take time to read the credits, and automatically assume that the guy behind KotF must have produced these things. Which would be a shame.

  • 4 weeks later...
If he asked them all for permission, he should list the names on his site. Instead he has given us the impression that he has done all that by himself, which is just plain wrong and mean.

There are 2-3 pages of credits. I noticed for 3d models he put in parenthesis' that he edited already existing models. Or that's just my assumption.

I looked at the trailer on Youtube and some guy posted that this is a scam that he's dragging out just to make money from.
