How large is yours?

Your vocabulary, that is ;)

I found an interesting little testing thingummy here.

We estimate that there are 82127 words/phrases which you fully comprehend and might potentially use.

There are 4649 words/phrases which you would find familiar whilst not actually understanding.

There are 3099 words/phrases which are not familiar to you, but which you would nevertheless be able to understand.

This is out of a sample of 150,000, but you are only tested on 100 randomly chosen.

Seems to be very random results depending on what words are picked. I got guesstimated 77861 words, which sounds very high for someone who isn't a native English speaker.

We estimate that there are 134,812 words/phrases which you fully comprehend and might potentially use.

There are 13,946 words/phrases which you would find familiar whilst not actually understanding.

I got a list with a bunch of medical terms, flowers, and birds that I knew. :) The insect ones threw me for a loop. Never have been the entomologist type.

Whoo, I almost got confused while filling the form, the checkboxes aren't placed very precisely, but I managed and got the following results:

100721 words/phrases which I fully comprehend

29442 words/phrases which I would find familiar but not fully understand

24793 words/phrases that are not familiar to me, but would be able to understand.

I think that's pretty good. :D

I would never have guessed you weren't a native speaker stoffe, neither am I...

Here's my results:

114667 fully use & comprehend

26343 familiar with

15496 not familiar, but would understand

Indeed seems to vary quite a lot depending on what words you get. Tried it again, this time I got 106920 known words, 34090 familiar words and 13946 not known but understandable words. Seems even more unlikely than the first result, so the test probably doesn't say that much about anything. :)

Some of the "words" are pretty odd for a test. Two I got this time:

revolutionary armed forces of colombia

federative republic of brazil

I got a list with a bunch of medical terms, flowers, and birds that I knew. :) The insect ones threw me for a loop. Never have been the entomologist type.

I got a whole bunch which sounded like Latin that I didn't know what they were. Perhaps the flowers and medical terms? :)

Stoffe did better than me and my native language is English. Guess I should have taken other science classes in college besides Chemistry. I like numbers and math more than the written language. Chemistry made more sense to me as I was an Accountant/Finance major.

99,172. Words/phrases fully comprehend

37,189. familiar with

18,595. not familiar with

I forgot the other numbers 'cause I'm that amazing.

Latins and Greek make my head hurt, no offense meant. Move on.

So you make a mistake whilst trying to point out someone's (someone who happens to have English as a second language!) non-existent mistake, then go and make an error in your next post. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

Yeah, thank you. At least I'm not on your grammar hit list.

Where is the "check all" box for the left hand column? ;P It took too long to check all of them manually. :D

We estimate that there are 154956 words/phrases which you fully comprehend and might potentially use.

There are approximately 0 words/phrases which you would find familiar whilst not actually understanding.

There are about 0 words/phrases which are not familiar to you, but which you would nevertheless be able to understand.

Then if you check every single box you see...

We estimate that there are 154956 words/phrases which you fully comprehend and might potentially use.

There are approximately 154956 words/phrases which you would find familiar whilst not actually understanding.

There are about 154956 words/phrases which are not familiar to you, but which you would nevertheless be able to understand.

And what I really got...

We estimate that there are 77478 words/phrases which you fully comprehend and might potentially use.

There are approximately 13946 words/phrases which you would find familiar whilst not actually understanding.

There are about 60433 words/phrases which are not familiar to you, but which you would nevertheless be able to understand.

Meh. So my English sucks. *shrugs* And I'm a native speaker too. :xp:

Some other questions I had for this little exercise:

- Where in tarnation was the column for "I have no frickin' idea what this word is?"

- Who is/was Alfred Habdank Skarbek Korzybski and what significance does he have in the annals of world society that justifies him being on a test like this?

- And who would name their child Habdank?

My eyes hurt now...

I got:

99172 Known words

46487 Familiar words

9297 Unfamiliar words

I have exactly the same question as cut: Where is the "I don't know" column? For all the alien words to me I had to pick "I've heard but dunno." The test sucks.
