News Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 ShackNews has reported that Star Wars: The Old Republic will feature an uncommon form of payment. Instead of being subscription-based like most MMOs are, paying a flat rate each month, EA has classified The Old Republic as a “microtransaction-based” title.EA CFO Eric Brown spoke on the matter today. “We are continuing to stick [...] Read the full story at starwarsmmo.net...
jrrtoken Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 >_< Well, we all knew that it would require a subscription, but this puts a bad taste in everyone's mouths. Hopefully they won't charge for every hour spent online.
Litofsky Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 I hate to be a pain, but... "So perhaps EA an BioWare are trying to move away from the traditional MMO payment plans as well as gameplay." ...the proper sentence should be "So perhaps EA and Bioware..." At any rate, we knew we'd have to pay, but it's never nice to hear that you'll have to fork over (even more) money to play.
Jeff Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 Yep, caught that just a minute ago, thanks. As for the payment, I suppose as long as it doesn't turn out to be any more expensive than WoW is for me right now, I'll be fine with it.
Mav Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 Sounds overly complex and stupid, I guess I'll wait until the whole thing is a bit more detailed, but right now I'd say am a bit dismayed.
Miltiades Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 >_< Well, we all knew that it would require a subscription, but this puts a bad taste in everyone's mouths. It does. At this moment, I'd rather pay per month, but we'll see how this system will be handled.
gstommylee Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 It was brought up that the business model has not been announced yet by Sean. So what ever it may be who knows.
SW01 Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 I did a quick search on the term and now I'm even more confused than when I started - is this a 'pay-as-you-play' type thing, or equivalent to the Microsoft points idea, or is it one of those dreadful in-game mall things that require you hand over money for pixels?
Tommycat Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 There was an overwhelming backlash about this on the BioWare forums. They have effectively said, "We have not decided on the microtransaction model. Seems like they were testing the waters and found them a bit too chilly. They have gone back on it. I doubt this is what we'll see.
Alkonium Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 My guess is this means it'll be free to play, but there'll be an item mall, like most "completely" free MMO's, such as ArchLord, RFOnline, Rappelz, and such.
Steve-O Kreesh Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Nothing like forking over cash for new Jedi robes or lightsaber crystals!
Jeff Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Make sure to see the newer post: http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=194427 Sounds like SWTOR will not be using microtransactions, or at least nothing has been officially announced yet.
HK-42 Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Maybe It will be like that runescape game, free then other things that are "Members" only.
The Doctor Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Maybe It will be like that runescape game, free then other things that are "Members" only. I sincerely hope not. Like everything else Runescape, such a server arrangement would be the pinnacle of lame.
