Gamasutra compiled a list of some of the more distinguished video game writers of the day. It gets off to a tremendous start with Chris Avellone, but after that, it sort of hits the wall, especially with Karpyshyn. Either way, Avellone's photo reminds me of an odd cross of Kirk and Ben Linus; Awesome, yet mysterious.

Eric Woplaw, who wrote the majority of GLaDOS' dialogue in Portal, is present, along with Marc Laidlaw, who wrote for the Half-Life series. Tim Schafer is thankfully there.

All in all, it was pretty good, except for Emil Pagliarulo from Bethesda. He needs to be put in a time capsule.

Heh, Chris Avellone looks sexier than I had thought.

WTF is Far Cry's writer doing on that list? >:[

Hey sweet, Eric Wolpaw

Kazushige Nojima look so much like me, I think he's my alter ego

**** yeah, Tim Schafer! \m/ Is it just me, or is Tim Schafer actually Jack Black's long-lost twin brother?

fffffffffff, no Sheldon Pacotti? Seriously, you have writers for Gears of War 2, Far Cry 2 but not Deus ****ing Ex?

That is what I've thought. :p List would be fail if Schafer was not present.

Why does one Emil Pagliarulo's notable projects include Oblivion? Oblivion's storyline was garbage. Even the Dark Brotherhood quests and Arena quests could not give it a saving grace as they had only a slight amount more to do with the main character. They should have put Morrowind's Bloodmoon expansion as a notable project

Dan Houser definantly deserves to be on that list. The Grand Theft Auto series and Bully mostly had compelling plotlines and characters. Tim Schafer as well. Grim Fandango remains my favorite adventure game.

All in all I have noticed a slight bias to this list. An obvious sign would be Oblivion being included as a notable project. I was very surprised that writers such as Sam Lake (Max Payne) or Amy Henning (Legacy of Kain, one of the most complicated plot lines I have yet to see recreated in more then one game of a series) were not mentioned. There was generally more of an emphasis on more modern games on the list. Like Far Cry. Far Cry was an okay plotline but it was defiantly overshadowed by a lot of games. Where is Warren Spector, he should have been on that list. Creating Deus Ex's plotline was a major achievement in video games.

Spector is a designer not a writer, I think. In any case, Pacotti was the lead writer and responsible for the whole plotline. Agreed on the Far Cry point though, the plot was quite obviously an afterthought and its only saving grace would be if it considered a parody of 80s Rambo-rip-off B-movies. :p

No Tim Cain = List Sucks
Bethesda is trying to make people "forget" about the previous Fallouts. They don't people to realize that they're better RPGs than F3.

I agree completely.

At least they left off David Gaider (AFAIK). He's not a bad writer, but he's not very good, either.

There are some missing, yeah, and some shouldn't be in there. I have no idea what a Oblivion or Far Cry writer is doing in that list... There are far better written games that that!

I don't see how the people who wrote Gears of War got on the list. The game barely has a story - it's just 'SHOOT SHOOT! CHAINSAW!'

This.

I also lol'd a bit at Hideo Kojima. Each MGS game has become more a story and less a game, so I think it's a case of a writer doing too much. I mean, MGS4 was about 70% cutscene and 30% actual game.

Also, I wished whoever wrote the new Prince of Persia game had been on there. The banter between Elika and the Prince had me in stitches the whole time I was playing. :)

I can't say anything about the new PoP game (haven't played it), but Jordan Mechner, who wrote the script for the Sands of Time, would definitely be on my list.
