JediAthos
I know this is a Star Wars forum, but as a gamer and a Trek fan as well I couldn't help but be interested in this game. I've been following it since the original developer had it and more so after Cryptic picked it up. It looks to me like this game will be pretty cool if you're into Star Trek at all. I know it's an MMO and that will put a lot of people off... but the official release date is Feb 2. any others interested or planning on playing? swphreak
I'm signed up for the Beta, and will end up trying it out for a month on release. STO reminds me a lot of Bridge Commander, which is awesome. I'm actually looking forward to an awesome spaceship MMO that isn't EVE Online and that's actually any good. JediAthos
Yup I applied for the Beta as well but haven't been accepted yet. I'm still hoping I'll get in at some point.

Holy crap, if it's anything like Bridge Commander it is indeed awesome. Then again, I've seen to much of your old MMO features on the previews as well. swphreak
They announced the open beta dates and the release date. Open Beta: January 12th to 26th, 2010 (US) Release Date: February 2, 2010 (EU) Release Date: February 5, 2010 I'm actually reinstalling Bridge Commander as we speak. Ooooh! Kobayashi Maru v1.0! swphreak
Holy double post, Batman! The Open Beta has started! I still have 3 hours for this torrent to finish. Is anyone else in the Open Beta?
Jae Onasi
Here are some Screenies My son really wants to play this game--I'm dithering on it since I'm still working on Lotro, DA, and all the Rock Band games. Ugh, all the choices!
True_Avery
Watched some gameplay of the game and I must say... This looks absolutely awful. Looks like a few other terrible Star Trek games all put together into one combined awfulness. I'll wait to see a release version, but I think this game was heavy rushed out from what I've seen. leXX
Holy double post, Batman! The Open Beta has started! I still have 3 hours for this torrent to finish. Is anyone else in the Open Beta? I'm downloading the torrent now. I have no intention of buying it though, I'm just going to play the beta for podcast research purposes. I don't like the space based Star Trek games like Legacy, but I loved the ground based ones like Elite Force and DS9 The Fallen, and considering half your time will be spent in space, I can't see it being a game I'll enjoy, that is unless they have made the space venturing simular to Freelancer, then I might change my mind. Looks like a few other terrible Star Trek games all put together into one combined awfulness. As much as it pains to say it, I agree. I love Star Trek (don't lynch me, guys) but most of the screens i've seen don't really scream 'Star Trek' - yes, it's got Starfleet, and Klingons etc, but it just feels like there's something missing. The ground areas look especially awful. There's something about Star Trek that's always been difficult to translate into games, and this looks to be no exception. I'll give it a go when it comes out, but i'm not holding out much hope.
swphreak
Of the hour I've played so far, I'm liking it. Im liking it more than WoW or EVE anyways. WoW is WoW (sick of fantasy) and EVE is just too boring. Character Creator - Didn't really play around with it. Being in Beta, Cryptic didn't unlock everything. It is a Cryptic game though, so I fully expect the character creator to be excellent. Ground Combat - It's not as bad as I thought it was going to be. It's fast paced, and certainly looks no different than WoW or TOR. Space Combat - Sort of "arcadey". Turns out there is a Z-axis. I was afraid it was all going to be stuck on one plane. It's no Bridge Commander, but it's better than Legacy, in my opinion. Again, I only got to play for an hour before having to go to class. I logged in a few minutes ago just to get a message saying that they're bringing the server down for an hour to apply a patch. My character name is Skeith. I think Cryptic merged all the game chat services or something? So it's Skeith@swphreak or something like that. Been ages since I played City of Heroes. leXX
Anyone else having trouble downloading the client? I left the torrent downloading overnight and when I woke up this morning it had only done 11%! Cancelled that, started with another host, and I'm still only getting an avg 50 kB/s. Gonna take me 2 days to download this thing at this rate. It's not my speed, I tested that this morning and it's a good 6.80Mb/s.
swphreak
Are you sure you checked your firewall/router/ports and stuff? It took me most of the day at an average of 400 kBps. Are you using the .torrent with a program or did you download the game patcher? Someone told me the game patcher itself is just an inefficient bit torrent program. JediAthos
My character name is Jureth, and I'm enjoying it so far myself. As I said before the space combat reminds me very much of the Starfleet Command games. I like the automatic teaming for missions. I like the skill advancement system and the bridge officer system as well. There seems to be some lag and I'm not sure if it's their servers or my machine. I've also experienced some times where I can't connect to the game server. Other than that I don't have too many complaints about the game. My preorder copy is paid off already so I'll enjoy the beta while I can and look forward to the retail release.

Jae Onasi
I would expect a lot of lag and delays in being able to log in to the servers--this was a problem for Aion the first couple of weeks after the game went live, and I saw it happening when Siege of Mirkwood was released for LOTRO. swphreak
I've had zero problems logging in so far, and I've only experienced about 2 hours of total lag time so far. Those were at peak hours though, and the game is still in Beta / "Demo". Edit: Here's a ship chart I came across. Can't wait to get in an Escort Class. It speeded up after a while, and I've installed it now with no problems. Thanks Phreak. Had a chance to play around with it, and so far I quite like it. I'm happy to see they have handled space similar to how I wanted it be, like Freelancer. It's nowhere near as bad as I though it would be. As expected though, I'm enjoying the ground based missions alot more than the space ones. Still not sold on buying it. I'll see if a few more days playing it changes my mind. Taak Farst
This looks to be a game most people wont find very addictive to the extent that World of WarCraft is and it looks to be a game that will get boring after a short while, and subscribers will leave after an amount of time. I don't see this game being too successful.

JediAthos
So beta ends today with head start for preorders beginning Friday and the official launch on Tuesday. Those of you that have played the beta what did you think? I think the game can be fun especially the large fleet actions an the PvP portion. The solo missions are fun in their own right, but can be repetitive to the point of being tedious so I hope they plan on varying the content. I'd also like to see a bit of free exploration added i.e being able to just beam down to a planet and walk around such as maybe being able to visit Starfleet HQ on earth or the Science Academy on Vulcan. I'd also like to see a few more starbases added where supplies are available. Those are just a few of my thoughts. I preordered so I will be playing next week when the game officially launches.
