I picked up HeartGold the other day, initially as a sympathy gift for my kids. I found out they really wanted to have SoulSilver instead, and I thought the Pokewalker would be a really cool incentive for me to keep working on increasing my activity for weight loss. So, I plugged the game into my DS. I knew my kids really liked the games, and lots of people here do, too, but I didn't quite 'get it' til I played it myself the first time. I was at work and during a long break in the day, I spent the entire time playing Pokemon and having a very good time with it. I have a Cyndaquil named "Sparky". I've also captured a geodude, a pidgey, a caterpie (that one's kind of cute!) and some other thing I renamed 'Wormy'. I don't have the faintest clue what I'm doing in the game, but I'm having fun doing it!

Treat it like every other RPG you've played in terms of gameplay and you'll quickly end up knowing everything there is to know about Pokeymanz. Also, if you want more info about your Pokeymanz, there's always sites like Serebii and Bulbapedia.

The Serebii Pokedex is a good place to start if you're willing to look through some information that may look confusing at first: http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-dp/

Here's the entry on Cyndaquil: http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-dp/155.shtml

ITT we talk about HeartGold and SoulSilver ok go!

Having a baby Larvitar sprite follow you around is just about the cutest thing ever, fyi

Interesting...

You have about the same team I had when I played Silver and pwned school in a tournament.

Original Silver didn't have your 'Jed' though, so I had a Scrizzor there. And Umbreon instead of a Volteon.

Otherwise awesome party. Feels awesome to throw out one epic Pokemon after another huh? I always imagine Lance going slowly insane after losing yet another Dragonite to Aeroblast.

I don't have an DS though...I quitted after GBA. But I still discuss Pokemon with my students once a while. Apparantly most of them don't even know how to catch Lugia because they spill the Masterball early on and don't know how to manage using Ultra's and Fast Balls like you did. :)

Hmm, I need some advice from some of the pokeveterans around here. My team consists of: 1) Crocanaw 2) Heracross 3) Espeon 4) Nidorino and 5) Pidgeotto, and I'm having trouble deciding on a sixth. I could either add Red Gyarados or Jolteon, I simply love Gyarados and their cool, but Jolteon is also cool and complements my team better. Maybe I should kick out one of my current starters and add both? Oh yeah, and one downside to Jolteon would be me having to spend hours getting a level 1 Eevee to level 30ish + I don't have a thunderstone yet.

Edit: I'm thinking of just cutting out Pidgeotto since I like him the least, probably because he's been part of my starting team in nearly every game.

Your 6th pokemon should pretty much always be an HM slave unless you're talking about a player vs. player team. It is a waste to give most of the HMs to your main team, the few exceptions being Fly and Surf. I've got a level 10 Krabby as my 6th since he can learn 6 out of 8 HMs.

If PvP is battling is the case, I'd suggest you get an electric pokemon. You don't really need a Gyarados since you already have a Crocanaw for water.

I'd also suggest, if you're just building a battle team, you replace your Heracross with something like a Golem or Steelix. Herecross' stats aren't fantastic, and you team is lacking a rock/ground type which come in handy against things like electric types, which your team currently is weak to. Your Nidorino could also probably be replaced by some kind of fire type, but that's just me.

Just my casual opinion though. Lynk and Mav are the ones with character sheets detailing all this since they are the very best, that no-one ever was

Basically just a low level (usually) pokemon that can learn a bunch of HMs or required abilities like flash, rocksmash, cut, fly, etc...

I have an HM slave, but I want to train a 6th guy that I'll sit out everytime I have to go through a hefty cave or something, but bring back in for a gym or non-HM base.

I use Tropius and Golduck for HM slaves, combined they can learn all 8, and even Flash. Which works out great since you prolly wont need to have Golduck know surf since a team member usually knows surf since it's such a great move.

As far as your team goes, I'd recommend something along the following lines:

Croconaw-Waterfall, Ice Punch, Earthquake, Swords Dance (Dragon Dance would be better, but you'd have to breed that on)

Heracross-Megahorn, Close Combat, Stone Edge, Night Slash

Espeon-Calm Mind, Psychic, Shadow Ball, Signal Beam

Nidorino-Honestly I'd get rid of Nidorino, it's move pool is similar to Heracross and he's much weaker

Pidgeotto-Fly, Steel Wing, Quick Attack, Brave Bird

Your team's main weaknesses are the fact that you don't have an electric move, and you have no fire moves to use against Steel types. Also, Croconaw would be your only poke with an Ice move to use against Dragon types. Now it's not something I'd normally recommend, but a Tyranitar can actually cover all of those weakness, it can learn Fire, Ice, and Thunder Fang through the use of Heart Scales. You'd probably be better off getting 2 separate pokemon to cover those weaknesses than make a Tyranitar like that though. Another option would be a Starmie as it can learn Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Psychic and Surf, all powerful moves w/ excellent type coverage, but you'd still need something with Fire.

If you keep Nidorino and evolve it to Nidoking you can teach it Flamethrower, so that's an option. Lastly another good option would be to get a Dratini from the Game Corner for 2100 coins, Dragonite can learn several of the TMs and is just a formidable pokemon in general. Also the moves I'm suggesting can be hard to obtain through TM's, Ice Beam, T-bolt, Flamethrower they are all TMs from the Game Corner and at 10,000 coins a piece, ridiculously expensive, you you'll prolly have to opt for their less accurate but stronger counterparts, like Thunder, Blizzard and Fire Blast.

Thanks for the in depth advice Mav, but I'm really just playing for fun, yet at the same time, can't decide between gyarados and jolteon. I like jolteon but I kinda don't want to spend a lot of time hunting for a thunderstone and then leveling up a recently hatched eevee; yet on the flip side, I also like gyarados, but it's a pain getting the range of natures I want and I already have a water type.

After battling red gyarados a few times I just realized I didn't really care for one in my party, so I'm going with Jolteon (yes I'll have to sit at least one poke out when I go through caves and stuff =[ but still). Now... what's the fastest way to get a guy to level 30 (I have 4 badges so far, so no I can't run to the elite 4 + exp share)?

Ah wtf a wee update, why not. Not got much further in all honesty but oh well.

Bombflower - Quilava

Spr_4h_156.png

The only real big hitter in my team - for now. starting to learn some pretty nice moves.

Slowpoke (no nickname yet, i like it's species name enough :p)

Spr_4h_079.png

always liked slowpoke, and it has some cool evolutions and is hard to kill. and quite adorable of course!

Heracross (also no nickname yet, though considering 'Bugman' after the Blur song...)

Spr_4h_214_m.png

got really lucky with this. it's still in training after i caught it at level 3 in about my 5th headbutt. i was like  then i was like :D this thing will start hitting really hard soon.

going to challenge the 3rd gym soon. i always found it really hard, hence the training at the moment... >_>
