Darth Nihilus

decalibron

Recommended Posts

hi all, i just joined lucasforums, and although most of u guys probably know this, there was just something interesting i picked up and wanted to point out: the name given to Darth Nihilus isn't random at all, or even Star Wars related! It's from the word annhilation, which as y'all know means total and utter destruction (katarr ring a bell?) so really, there was meaning behind Nihilus, not just a name that i can never figure out how to say. So call me lame, but i thought that was very interesting. A lot more thought went into the character's name than i previously thought.

Pretty much what most know, even though some might think him a "cool" character by looks alone. Though there is also the Nihilistic connection, likely referring to the fact that his continual lust, or hunger for power, has no purpose, or no meaning. Along with his own life, when considering that he lost something the Exile didn't: his sense of self. Unlike Traya and Sion, he didn't leave a body behind, in any form. Only a mask.

I actually hadnt figured out the "annihilation"-connection, I was just like "oh, a guy whose name comes from the word nihilism, very original" and that was it. I never liked the character enough to start thinking about the name.

And if someone hasnt figured out,

Vader=Invader

Sidious=Insidious(this should be pretty clear for any of us users here :xp: )

My point is, all the sith lords have names that are poorly "camouflaged" words depicting them, so there is nothing extragavant about Nihilus.

Let's see you work with Malak then.

The Yezidi "Peacock Angel", Melek Taus is one possibility. Melek Taus is often identified by Christians and Muslims with Satan.

The Mal'akhim are the messengers of God in the Tanakh/Old Testament. As has been said, Satan in the Christian tradition at least is often identified as a fallen angel.

One could also connect the name Malak with the Latin "mala" which means "jaw", but onl in the sense that Malak doesn't have one, in which case he might as well be Darth Restraint.

According to Leland Chee it derives from "malice", but that's just ridiculous.

Besides, a better question is why

his old name was Alek Sfiftierth in Latin. :p (And yes, the misspelling of "fiftieth" does reflect the acutal misspelling used. If you prefer, his name could also be rendered Alek Sash Wednersday. :p )

Then there wouldn't be any interesting sense with his name, and Malice... yeah... cool... jaw? cool... malak just have a name without any interest.

But I see your point about every sith having some meaningful name.

Actually you are wrong, Nihilus come rather from Nihilism, or Nihil.

Nihil meaning "nothing" in Latin, so it also make sense.

And Nihilism is a philosophic point of view, that the life, the world, is meaningless, that there is not any goal in the life, there is "nothing".

So Nihilis is "nothing" or rather I would say he bring "nothing" by destroying every thing that exist. He is like a black hole that eats everything he reaches.

So, what about Revan then? any connection there? if the lucas arts people are philosophical as we are, then it may have something to do with redemption, or something along those lines. And yes, I knew most of you would've drawn the connection between Nihilus and Annhilation, but it was an interesting point for me, since im relatively new to lucasforums and the kotor series.

Edit:

hmm, i did find one about revenant, meaning one who returns after death, or a long absence. It works, but it's not all that great. Anyone have a better one?

hehe. I've always been a fan of revan, but he lost points in my book because of the apparent lack of thought in the choice of his name.

Edit:

MERRY CHRISTMAS Y'ALL!!!

Edit 2

Hmmm, I don't think it has anything to do with annihilation. He's Darth Nihilus because he's nihilistic, as others have stated.

I think it could be either. THe end result of his power would be the annhilation of the jedi, the force, and all life.

Actually, I won't ban you for double-posting decalibron, like Sabretooth says below, but I will tell you to please read the rules (click here) and avoid double posting in the future. Thanks. --Jae
