Astor Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Well, kind of. The official name of the new planet is Kepler 16b, but astronomers are already referring to it informally as Tatooine, after the home planet of Luke and Anakin Skywalker in the George Lucas “Star Wars” movies, which also had two suns. Indeed, a representative from Mr. Lucas’s production company, Lucasfilm, expected to participate in a news conference at NASA’s Ames Research Laboratory in California, Kepler’s home office. So, seeing as we've now found where the Outer Rim begins, would that mean that Earth is in the Unknown Regions?
Lynk Former Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 You mean it was never in a galaxy far, far away?!
mimartin Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 So, seeing as we've now found where the Outer Rim begins, would that mean that Earth is in the Unknown Regions? We are the True Sith.
Miltiades Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 You mean it was never in a galaxy far, far away?! I know! George has some explaining to do!
Trench Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 A long time ago in a galaxy just over there. . . .

I had an astronomy professor in college who said that kind of thing was impossible. I would love to email him this article and read his shocking response, but unfortunately he passed away from cancer over a year ago.
Sabretooth Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 I'm pretty I read about this 4-5 years ago when it was discovered and named. Well thank you, Wikipedia.
purifier Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 If you go, pack to wear layers. Because those suns move back and forth all the time, temperatures on the planet can change by 50 degrees or more over the course of a few Earth days, from minus 100 to minus 150 Fahrenheit. So the weather is like “a nippy day in Antarctica at best,” as Dr. Doyle put it. Well this odd, sounds a lot like Hoth instead of Tatooine.
Q Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Wanna bet Lucasfilm demands a licensing fee for the use of the name?
Lynk Former Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Wanna bet Lucasfilm demands a licensing fee for the use of the name? Plausible considering they tried to get the original Stormtrooper helmet designer to stop making replicas of the helmet... but failed.
Prime Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 We are the True Sith. What a colossal disappointment that would be...
ChAiNz.2da Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Wanna bet Lucasfilm demands a licensing fee for the use of the name? Why not? Worked on Google for Droid™ Considering Tatooine is one of the most iconic planets in the SW universe.. you could bet if I were Lucas I'd jump on it.. hehe
Lynk Former Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 What a colossal disappointment that would be... Clearly we're the descendants of the protoculture
Pho3nix Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Wanna bet Lucasfilm demands a licensing fee for the use of the name? Eh, they could always name it after the numerous misspelled ones... Tattooine, Tatoine etc.
