I think we have probable cause to knock the TSoMI count back to 5.

Ah, but it was pointed out to me the tails are a different thickness. Look closely!

Smirk monkey + Banana monkey (Jojo Sr.) + Three-headed monkey + Bride monkey with thicker tail than Jojo Sr. = 6 monkey heads

The black one wears a hat so it's obviously the same as Smirk's, but the gray one could be a different one. Elaine ostensibly could have smuggled the Monkey Island one onto the ship -- or it could be the same type of monkey picked up elsewhere.

Escape establishes that the grey monkey swung on the totem until it starved to death so the one in the wedding dress must be a different one.

She must have collected them from somewhere at least. It might not be far fetched to think of the monkey cast as an ensemble. Elaine could have collected Smirk's Monkey and the one she found hanging around the great monkey head. And those blue eyes ... maybe we should wait for official word (it's pretty obviously the same monkey in the Special Edition, but by my own rules, the SEs don't count 😬).

On that note, @Jake can surely rectify our ailing ToMI monkey count?

Related topic: is the parrot in Booty Boutique the same as the one on Dinky Island?

Monkey+Island+2+-+Parrot+Hint+2.png

ARGUMENTS FOR:

1. This is the same breed of parrot: red head, yellow belly, purple wings with green tips.

2. Both are called "Polly" or "Mr. Polly".

3. With the MI2 ending, these locations might be very very close together. The amusement park looks a lot like Booty Island, right outside the store.

If this is actually the same parrot and his name is Polly, then is "Polly the Squawker Lives in Davy Jones' Locker" about him? Is this parrot undead??!!!

Probably not. Probably not.

Also while we’re here we might as well clear up if the scumm bar seagull is the same one that died on flotsam island. I vote no because why would it be.

pretty sure the men of low moral fibre and the gopher repellent are one in the same though.

Objection!

Please take a look at these two excerpts from the "Monkey Head" script and the "Church" script.

Both clearly refer to the monkey as Jojo!

EXCERPT FROM THE MONKEY HEAD SCRIPT:

(...)
script jojo-open-gate {
		cut-scene {
			class-of nose-up is UNTOUCHABLE
			sleep-for 1 second
			stop-script jojo-follow
			walk selected-actor to 699,126
			walk jojo to-object nose-up
			wait-for-actor selected-actor
			do-animation selected-actor turn-left
			break-here 2
			wait-for-actor jojo
(...)

EXCERPT FROM THE CHURCH SCRIPT:

(...)
do-animation jojo turn-seductively-around
break-here 11
sleep-for 1 second

do-animation jojo eat-bouquet
break-here 26

sleep-for 1 second

do-animation jojo disrobe
break-here 8
draw-object wedding-dress
do-animation jojo jump-up-and-down

sleep-for 1 second

say-line selected-actor "What?"
(...)

?imw=5000&imh=5000&ima=fit&impolicy=Letterbox&imcolor=%23000000&letterbox=false

How can Jojo hang at the totem and be in the church at the same time?

Also...

Does this script indicate that the two monkeys, together, are collectively named "Jojo"?

Or, is the hat monkey so insignificant that it doesn't get acknowledged, with all of the false bride's actions being attributed to a different monkey named Jojo? If the script for Smirk's machine doesn't include that hat monkey, is it arguable that the hat monkey doesn't actually exist?

It is also entirely possible for Jojo to have gone to Melee with Elaine and then traveled back to Monkey to hang from the totem pole. This is just science, people. :science:

If that happened, Your Honor, then Guybrush Threepwood is cleared of yet another civil charge.

As a well and truly respected Monkey Island researcher, I would be doing a disservice by not involving myself in this debate, and throwing my nonsensical opinion into the ring.
My answer? Escape from Monkey Island. Yeah, I said it.

I secretly believe none of the Monkeys are real in that game. Do I have evidence? No. But I have a hunch, and those pay off.

OBJECTION! There are AT LEAST 5 named monkeys in the franchise--Jojo (MI1), unrelated Jojo (MI2), Jojo Jr. (EMI), Timmy (EMI), and Jacques (TMI). The series' JPI (Jojo Percentage Index) has just dropped from 75% to 60%, and I have a feeling it may drop further!

Not if you trust the back of the Escape From Monkey Island box. Though for whatever reason, the promise of "more monkeys than the three previous Monkey games combined!" was toned down for the PlayStation 2 version.

They likely changed that because the preceding games never hit the PS2, hence the vague reference to "the hit adventure series." So, in that sense, the back of the PC box's claim stands.

But: Is that mere hubris not rooted in fact?

Even as a preteen I remember thinking the marketing listing "more monkeys than ever!" as some sort of selling point was really bizarre. Like, did they think that to this point I'd been playing these games because of the monkeys?

Unless the wedding dress monkey is in fact a seperate monkey in which case there are 4 jojos out of 6 monkeys bringing the jpi up to a solid 66.6 recurring. With statistics like that it’s only logical to assume that every simian in caribbean is called jojo and that jacques and timmy are foreign visitors. Timmys got a clear boston twang to his ooks and eeks and with a name like jacques, he’s probably a norwegian.
