I have both DVD's, but only saw Harry Potter in the theater. Why? I have two small boys, 4 and 5.5. Too young for LotR, but perfect for HP.

Which was the better movie? LotR, no question. Tolkien set up a detailed universe - his books are more like history than fiction. Rowling tells a nice tale with nice characters.

But ... for the next few years, HP will be the dominanant fantasy theme with my boys. So, since I love sharing with them, I'd have to say I'd sooner grab the HP DVD off the shelf.

Lord of the Rings of course. The books started a phenomenon (D&D.. countless fantasy spinoffs, not to mention three beautiful movies). Can't really say Harry Potter's done that (aside from kids dressing up as the guy while waiting for the maivie & buying random innana HP merchandise. :)).

First of all I wanna say that Harry Potter film is crap. Its crap cause theres no character development in it unlike the books and they cut vital stuff out of it. Theyre not so inocent in the books, not made out to be perfect kids cause theyre not, they just made it like that so I can hardly blame most of you for saying its childish.

This also goes for the first book aswell in ways as if you look at it she had to write it in a way in which its gonna apeal to poeple, in the form of a tragic kid whos lost his parents having adventures, not about the proper story line of the books as much. Its not really like that if you read the later books Prisoner of Azkaban and The Goblet of Fire as the theme gets much darker and develops alot more into a theme of death and betrayal.

S please, dont judge off the film or the first book, theyre of really the bulk of the series. By all means, read it but dont judge solely on it or the film.

P.S.

As for Harry Potter being based off LotR, are you MAD?! Whered you hear that?

One could argue that LOTR spawned the modern fantasy genre, but I don't see it as a direct influence for Harry Potter.

Theres no way it could have spawned from LotR, even indirectly. Its not like it in any way, and there have been fantasy stories before. Alot of things in Harry Potter are actualy taken from Legends and Folk Tales, the earliest forms of Fantasy genre. Nothings taken form or influenced by LotR.

Maybe a few *SPOILERS* here...

And what about the troll in Harry Potter (i.e., the cave troll in LOTR)...or the stone in Harry's pocket at the end, where Quirrell is trying to find it (i.e., the ring in Bilbo's pocket in the Hobbit, where Golum is trying to find it)...and the human form of Voldomort looks surprisingly like a Black Rider...just little things like that...if anyone can think of anymore familiarities please post them...

The trolls were way different...and trolls aren't unique to LotR or HP...besides the HP troll was a "mountain troll" and it looked like it had come from humans while the cave troll looked like (similar to orcs) it had come from elves.

HP doesn't really remind me of LotR...more than say Star Wars of course but still I wouldn't compare them. I like em both. ^_^

I don't feel bad being the only other person that voted for Harry Potter. I watched the film with much skeptisism, then when it was finished I caught my self playing it over again. It's not that I dislike LOTR, I enjoyed it too. Keep in mind I never read the books for either one, but LOTR had alot going on, and sometimes was difficult for me to follow. The thing is though is that these two films were designed for two completely different audiences in mind. Potter was made for kids, but adults can have fun watching it too. LOTR is not for kids at all, but I had a bit more fun watching Harry Potter for some reason, I wish his books had been out when I was little.:(

Yeh, it was good, but I didn't really get it. Harry Potter was easy to understand, but uh example

"Wow! A troll! Lets go in the bathroom and get it!"

Actually I may understand that LOTR was a bit difficult to follow, because they had to have all of the main story in LOTR movie, but they left out much of the details

Did you know:

That it was 17 years between Bilbos party and Frodo leaving the Shire?

That Galdalf, Sauron and even the Balrog is of the same race?

That it was an elven lord named Glorfindel, and not Arwen, who saved Frodo from the Black Riders?

That Aragorn was about 80 years old at the time of the movie?

That Gollum was a former hobbit named Sméagol?
