Agen Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 Scientists from the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) said that, after conducting the most accurate study of Big Bang radiation, they can confirm our universe is "spatially flat on a wide scale". The project, called Archeops, collected microwave radiation from the Big Bang with the help of a balloon that was sent to Earth's stratosphere in February. Data analysis made it possible to calculate the time of the Big Bang explosion - between 12 and 15 billion years ago. A map of the Big Bang will be prepared by European Space Agency's satellite Planck in 2007.
Boba Rhett Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 Suuuuuuure it is. In other news, still no cure for cancer.
mima kake Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 That's what they said about the earth to. But look what happend:D
acdcfanbill Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 So, the infinate space up to down is shorter than the infinite space side to side? or the side to side concentration of matter is higher?
Darklighter Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 If the universe was flat, the same rule would apply to every object in the universe, therefore we would be flat also...which is impossible...I think... *becomes lost in deep thought*
leXX Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 If the universe is flat, I'm not addicted to LF.
matt-- Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 he means 'disc shaped.' not flat I believe this is an faulty claim. You can't get an accurate measurement of something so large using two reference points a mile apart. The margin for error is astronomical
Agen Posted October 15, 2002 Author Posted October 15, 2002 That was so cheesy! lol BTW i just copied and pasted, i don't have a clue or any views abotu this
Arreat Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 well im no scientist or nething but the earth was believed to be flat loooooooooooong time ago...
Agen Posted October 15, 2002 Author Posted October 15, 2002 We're talking about the universe now Earth to Usetheforx, do you read? (rhetorical question, don't answer)
Wacky_Baccy Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 Posted by matt-windu You can't get an accurate measurement of something so large using two reference points a mile apart. The margin for error is astronomical *groans* That was an awful pun, matt... Did you really have to?

Clem Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 nothing is flat .... even a piece of paper has thickness ... but it is very minor in comparison to its other dimensions in this respect ... is how they say the universe is flat its DAMN HUGE ... but not very thick still dunno if its true
BCanr2d2 Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 Hey, we are SW fans here obviously, so what they are suggesting is a bang like that on the Death Star in the SE editions. What they are suggesting is that the universe is more like a discus rather than a ball. Think of our galaxy, spatially it is falt too. It has a central core, with rotating arms, which are, or believed to be a lot skinnier than the core, which fits the "spatially flat" theory. Then again, current science theory also has just as much proof about parallel universes too.

EDIT:until we found out it wasn't
Redwing Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 *gets distracted by topic title* "Universe inside of your heart You've gotta let me know so you can be free..." *snaps out of Savage Garden-induced daze* What was this topic about again?
Rogue15 Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 then what happens when a meteor hits the barrier? does it go on the other side like asteroids?
The Truthful Liar Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 I goes *bonk* :D Or perhaps it continues... maybe it's a never ending flatness... OR maybe it seems to never end but actually it's just a continuing loop... OR what about if it's actually going to the end however it's actually going backwards... OR the other way around... OR... *snaps* :D
CagedCrado Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 My theory is we are all little sims inside a big sim world, we ARE flat MWAAUUHAHAH!
Quotation Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 Well, individuals first determined the Earth was spherical by watching the declination of ship masts, as they travelled over the horizon. Now, seeing horizons are nonexistent in space...
CagedCrado Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 greeks figured out a mathematical equation but i dont know what it is. They figured out almost exact same answer we have now using gps and crap
