I went with Jim Cameron. He directed my all time fave Sci-Fi movie Aliens. As well as other classics like The Abyss, Alien, Titanic, Terminator, and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Also he's Canadian so that's always a big factor in my vote lol....

There's some other good directors you missed to like Atom Egoyan and Jerry Bruckheimer. Some race car fans will like movies from Rob Cohen. Plus everyones mentioned Peter Jackson (all he's done that's gotten international attention is the LOTR trilogy, but damn that's all yo u really need lol), so no need to bring him up, oh wait.....

Out of the ones there, I'll definitely have to go with Tarantino. He made Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Jackie Brown, is working on Kill Bill and he also wrote True Romance and Natural Born Killers(He wrote the first four drafts, then gave it to Oliver Stone, who massacred Tarantino's drafts to create the fifth and final version of the screenplay. From what I've seen of the fourth one, the movie was nowhere near as good as Tarantino's version.)

Adding to the "why aren't they on the list?" list, where's M. Night Shyamalan? He did direct The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, after all.

Didn't Shyamalan do "Signs" also?? Cuz that movie was great.

That's a good point, he is one of my fave directors as well. Yes he did do the amazing Signs as well Darth Yoda. It's impossible to please everyone with a list of directors, I just went for 10 of the top ones I could think of off the top of my head. I have to admit I'd have put him in if I'd have thought of it :)

I think George Lucas co-wrote an original script of Apocalypse Now, I think so but I'm not sure.

Speilberg.

Indy movies, ET (as much as I hate it, he made it standable), Saving Private Ryan (best... war movie... ever) Band of Bros (he directed one episode I think), and of course....

Well, they're better directed than the new SW movies, as much as I like them both.

Im loyal to Lucas. Spielberg, Cameron, Jackson and Scott are up there with him. Can one of the mods edit the poll and put Peter Jackson up there? He needs to be on the list.

It's my poll and I'll cry if I want to!!!

Erm....I mean I personally don't think it needs changing, especially if that means taking one of the others down. I'm not gonna call it anything like a definative list of great directors becase it isnt' not sure if that's possible, and certainly not just 10. I think LOTR is absolutely great film mkaing, but other than that, I have no idea what Peter Jackson has done (not that I'm saying his other stuff has been bad, I just don't know anything about it). I think all the directors in the list have had consistant success over a number of projects, I don't think Peter Jackson has anaged that yet personally, but I sure hope he will!
