It seems every Star Wars fan I talk to hates Star Trek and vice versa. Personally, I love them both. They each offer something different. What do you guys think? As a family we used to sit together and watch ST:The Next Generation and there were some very good episodes. But(you knew that was coming) to me, they rely to much on time travel to resolve story lines. Almost every major story line would have something to do with a temporal anomally. Darklighter Posted April 14, 2003 Share Posted April 14, 2003 I love them both:)Voyager will remain one of the best TV shows I have ever watched; I loved the characters, the stories were intriguing (and often hilarious), and I always wanted to know what happened next in the plot. On the other side of the equation, the Star Wars films (well, the OT) are some of the greatest films ever made IMO, and my personal favourites (pretty obvious, since I'm a dedicated member of this place lol). I don't see why there is such rivalry between SW and ST fans. They are both completely different stories set in completely different universes. Perhaps they use the same story lines to save money by using old CGI fotage. I was really suprised when I saw Star Trek: Nemesis. It had a much different atmosphere than any other StarTrek movie or episode. I still loved it though. I think one thing any half intelligent person could appreciate in the Star Wars movies, even if they hate it, is the dedication a complexity involved in creating each one (especially ep2). I really have no problems with the Trekkies at all. I am here at LucasForums because I love Star Wars.....I don't know how it happened, but I just can't get enough. I am not a Star Trek basher (heheh), and I respect other people's opinions (most of the time) . Star Wars on the other hand, completly engulfed me, and turned me into the psychopath I am today. Star Wars just has much more to offer in my opinion and so uptight like ST. The movie story's are also very intricate. I mean we have been wondering stuff since the 70's like what was the Old Republic like and the Jedi Order when they numbered in the Millions or Thousands. The scene where they stuck the insect thing in the men's heads scared the poo out of me. Thus said, I have no problem with ST, but I'm a straight up SW and LoTR freak. StormHammer Posted April 18, 2003 Share Posted April 18, 2003 I watched the re-runs of the original series of Star Trek in the early 70's, when I was a small boy, and they made quite an impression on me. But then again, so did Dr. Who...and U.F.O... Of course, when Star Wars came along, it blew me away, ad basically re-wrote the way people approached SF on the big screen - and pretty much spoiled all the sad little special FX on the small screen. ST:TNG was quite good, but I think it went downhill from there. The major problem between Star Trek and Star Wars is that Star Trek was a series, and they had to keep trying to come up with interesting storylines. The simple fact is that you can't consistently come up with great plots all of the time, week in week out. This is one of the reasons why I'd hate to see Star Wars turned into a long-term TV series, because then it would likely go the same way - pretty much how the EU novels went downhill after a while. It's a bit ridiculous having the same set of people saving the galaxy week in week out - well, downright preposterous actually. A Star Wars TV series might work if they took the bold step of following one set of characters one season, and a completely different set another season... or even just limited it to a serial, like Band Of Brothers. In fact, that would make more sense in terms of giving a nod to the old Flash Gordon serials that seem to be part of the inspiration for Star Wars. Anyway, my wife really likes Star Trek Voyager, and she watches Enterprise...so they must be doing something right for long-term fans of the series. I'm the Star Wars nut in my house. Maybe so, but even the best writers must be hard-pressed to come up with something fresh and innovative every week. I too find a lot of Star Trek episodes are basically rehashes of what's gone before. It could've worked, but time-travel seems to be more frequently used and easier to work out in Enterprise, which is set before all the other series, so they aren't be very loyal to the timeline. For a while they resorted to showing episodes of Enterprise back-to-back on Sky One; not sure whether that was because ratings were going down, and they wanted to finish the series quicker or because something else was coming on, but I think it's safe to say that Enterprise hasn't been everyone's cup of tea. I agree with you that they rushed into another series way too quickly, and made quite a radical step setting it at the beginning. Still, I don't have many faults with the new series. I enjoy watching Enterprise, just like I enjoyed watching Voyager when it was being showed.
