Deciding on a car to buy.....

I've narrowed my type of car down to 4. A Chevy Cavalier, Pontiac Sunfire, Chrysler or Dodge Neon, and or a Dodge Stratus. All aged between 1995 to 2000.

Why those 4 kinds? Because they are cheap. Although Stratus' are gas guzzlers instead of mizers. OK scratch Stratus I narrowed it to 3.

I would've liked a Honda Civic (between a 95 to 98 year model) but they are pretty much outta my league. For the same Km's it costs about a grand more in Canadian dollars.

SO i'm askin you guys the forum members if you know ANYTHING about these kinds of cars what's their strengths and weaknesses? Pro's and Con's?

All are obviously gas misers, cheap on insurance (which is what i'm going for economical), and low km's. I'm looking at 4 doors too. Also is it really better to get Manual instead of Auto? Lots of ppl have said Manuals are better. The only problem is I can't drive a Standard lol.... And i'm not getting racing models like Z24's or Gt's because I hear the insurance is sky rocketing on those models espicially if you're male (which sucks ass).

My one friend has a Cavalier (he drives one although now it's quite old and falling apart at the seams) and says to go with that. A lot of people suggest them. But the 2000 neons I was looking at were nice with lots of amenities and they actually look quite sexy on their own (no modifications), and was wondering if anyone knows about Neons? One of my co-workers drives a Neon and another drives like a 2001 sunfire. Although my sunfire will be a few years older can anyone tell me about these 3 cars?

THANKS A LOT O!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had a Cavalier... hated it. Will most likely never buy Chevy again. Or any GM.

Hell,.. I may never buy American again after that experience,.. plus after that car I managed my way into an Audi 5000CS Turbo (fully loaded) that ruined me for everything else.

Get a VW. :D An old Jetta should still be cool.

Seriously... The Cvic would be first on my list. Out of the other ones you listed though I'd have to go with the Stratus. I've heard mixed things about the Neons,.. plus they're kinda wimpy looking.

Well if I had the money I would get a VW. But i'm going for economical and reliability here. Hence why I chose those three cars. I already took the Stratus out because it eats gas like crazy (damn V6).

I've been hearing mixed things about Neon's as well edlib, but I hear a lot of good thing's about Cavalier's and Civic's.

I am personally an SUV guy so I would have been able to help you a lot more if you wanted an SUV...

However, the Cavilier is not that great of a car. I am not impressed and they are not rated very high.

Something that will help you a lot is if you do a google search on Car Consumer Reports. They will give you a lot of details about those models and maybe some others that you have not considered. You can look at their performance ratings and their reliablity.

Hope this helps a little. Let us know what you find after the consumer reports.

I'm thinking of buying a used car one of my friend's neighboor is advertising for sale.

Its an old classic beattle by VW. Its in great condition and the car itself is cool in my opinion. Nobody has it on the road so its a plus. Nobody wants it so nobody will steal it :) and its stylish, fuel efficient. I'm thinking of painting it black or somet wierd colour. Right now its bright yellow.

Thanks Wolfman NCSU.

I got a great link to eopinions.com and read a whole bunch of opinions on the Neon, Cavalier, and Sunfire.

A lot of the Cavalier and Sunfire opinions were mixed, but the Neon had quite a lot of positive ones. Which was a plus because i'm mostly attraced to that one anyways.

I think i'm gonna go with the Neon but we'll see i'm still gonna test drive 'em to see if it's the right fit for me or not.

Thanks for all the help guys. ;)

Out of those you listed, I'd go for the cavalier or the neon. they are both pretty good on gas, and as long as you keep up with servicing them, they can last a long time. another possibility would be looking at a 94-98 Nissan Altima, they are great cars, good mileage, not too expensive, and they'll last.

I own a 2000 cavalier two door.

It currently has 11,000 miles and i have never had a SINGLE bit of trouble with it. The gas mileage is GREAT, 160 mile trip barely takes a quarter of a tank. Although I haven't checked the size of my tank, I believe I get around 30+ miles to the gallon, so the cost of keeping it fueled is low.

I know nothing about the Neon, so I can only recommend the Cavalier as it is a great car.......at least for me.

Go down to walmart and buy a skateboard:D

I don't know, all I know is my car is a Darkstar with Metallic blue Phantom 2's and the fastest bearings ever made!!!

I love my skateboard. I got it for mainly transportation, and am starting to learn tricks:D

I can make it down the street to the 7-11 and back in like 5 minutes:)

Please just give me info on the 3 car's above or a Honda Civic.

Piece of crap?

Obviously you know nothing about old muscle cars and so then you should then be condemned to ride in some lame ass rice turd.

It takes a real man to handle a 1968-1970 Nova with a 427 wedged between the frame rails with a 4 speed so your propably right. Go for the limp wristed turd bucket you mentioned.

I owned a Neon 1998. It was great. Its a good car especially if you want something economical but one that has some pep. Actually the Neon has more horses than the Civic. I personally own a Toyota Corolla, which is in the class you are looking for as well. I love my 'rolla. You should check into it as well - if it is affordable.

I currently drive a '98 Saturn which is a car I now hate. I bought it because soooooo many people went on about how good of a car it was. They must have been lying. I have talked to other Saturn dealers since, who are also dissapointed. I suppose at one time it was a good car, but I found that it gives me nothing but trouble. I bought the car at a time when I had low credit, so my payments are kind of high. The biggest mistake I made was trading in my '93 Nissan Sentra, for the Saturn. I drove the Sentra for 5 years without a single problem other than minor maintenance and regular oil changes. I had 130,000 miles on it when I sold it, and I still see it being driven around town by it's new owner. The car wasn't much to look at, but it sure took care of me and itself.

Now that my credit is better, I am looking into trading off the Saturn for another Nissan Sentra. The only major changes on the new Sentra's are on the exterior. The new ones look much better.

 That brought a tear to my eye. I'd kill for a car like that.

I'm more of a Mustang guy, myself. The 302 in my '85 5.0 GT isn't quite up there with that Nova's 427 block. But it hauls some decent ass. What I'd really kill for though is a 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1.
