@CalisDraws, I found something that might help you make the ultimate LucasArts Big Box facsimile! I found these ZakMcKracken uncut box print plates online. They were on Ebay, but they're long sold now. The seller claimed they were real. Maybe you can use them to get the exact dimensions, or to get a feel of how the boxes are when they're unfolded.

Thanks for clearing that up. I like this idea! If this was executed right, it could work brilliantly! In part one Guybrush was an innocent youth, but in part two you can already see his ego getting the best of him. Old Guybrush could be a cynical old man, eaten away by the ego he developed in the years. The goal could be to, through flashbacks that may be very exaggerated, get him to let go of his ego and regain his innocence and purity. In the process this could make the player doubt everything that Guybrush has experienced in the previous games. What is true? And what is make belief? When done right, it could be more Mulholland Drive than Twin Peaks.

Iβm not to keen on the βGuybrush revisits the old gamesβ theme that keeps popping up the last couple of pages. While itβs a nice homage to the series, itβs again nothing new. Itβs recycling old ideas for a couple of cents of nostalgia. And while that obviously scores (looking at you Spider-Man), it does not make for something new, and it doesnβt make a good story most of the time. And come on, if you were Ron Gilbert, and youβd finally be able to make a Monkey Island again after 30 years, would you spend that time looking back at old games, most of which you had nothing to do with? I think whatever is coming is going to be totally unique for MI, and there will be very little nostalgia involved, aside from the recurring themes, islands and characters.

I never had a problem with the mazes and I remember the swamp puzzle as one of the highlights of the otherwise very flawed EMI. Actually Lucre Island was pretty fun as a whole if I remember correctly. I can do without insult swordfighting (or any variation on it) in RMI. I enjoyed it in SMI and CMI, but it would feel stale if it turned up again.

Nice reference there. Werenβt there three Zelda timelines? Too bad the Ocarina of Time split was an afterthought of Nintendo trying to glue together a hurdle of games with mostly their own stories. I donβt think any sane story teller would tell a story that way. Anyway, if this is the case, Iβd rather have them keep the timeline a secretβ¦ of Monkey Islandβ¦ (sorry, had to make that pun.) Let the players speculate about it for years to come.

LucasArts Extended Universe confirmed!
-
What I know is that in movies and tv productions it's not done to mix and match union and non union actors. That's why Sonic the Hedgehog keeps changing voice actors, between games and series. Video game land seems to have a kind of a wild west thing going on, although I'm not sure how come. LucasArts have always hired union va's as far as I can remember, so maybe it was just standard protocol, but Telltale clearly used non union VA's in the early days (that's why Sam and Max changed their VA's), and if I remember correctly some of those are in TMI too. (@Jake, even though you weren't involved in casting, maybe you can shed some light on this?)
-
I've heard that term fly around a lot about the first SE, but are we sure there were budget constraints? Because if there were, why hire grade A Los Angeles based union VO talent? They could've just gone the Telltale route and mix and match the established LA based talent with unknowns who didn't have to be payed union scale. That would've been an easier and better way to cut costs than on voice direction. I think a Steve Purcell cover art isn't very likely either, but I don't think it has anything to do with the backlash (which is still a small minority of the fan base). It probably has more to do with the reason Bill Tiller did the COMI backgrounds, to fit the game's style. Steve's style doesn't really match with Rex's, so I'm sure Rex will do the cover art (which I'm really curious about btw!)

Thatβs actually VERY interesting, and it explains a lot of things (particularly why Boenβs recordings stand out.) I could never have imagined the SEβs being directed by Darragh OβFarrell, heβs way to good a director for that. Based on his other works, he wouldβve never made the mistakes they did. I also remember a throwaway line from Rob Paulsen from one of his Talking Toons podcasts, where he said something like, βif you thought that was bad, try being directed by a LucasArts internβ. I always found it oddly specific, and I think he was referencing the MI:SE recordings. I donβt remember the episode number though, nor who the guest was.

Funny you said that, my first encounter with Monkey Island was that same demo. It was love at first sight. I donβt have any beef with the casting of the main characters in the SEβs, though I think they too couldβve benefited from better direction. Itβs most of the side characters that were newly cast that I donβt like for above mentioned reasons. Compare it to the diverse characters from CMI and how every voice and performance just *clicks*, that just never happens in the SEβs. Thatβs why I played them once and never touched them again. (Come to think of it, I think I didnβt even finish the first one.) This sums it up very well, and good example!
-
True, but thatβs no excuse for lazy casting and bad direction.

Sorry if I post too much about the voice direction of the SEβs. I work in the dubbing industry, so itβs professional deformation. If someone in my field delivered a product in that fashion heβd be butchered, and I just canβt stand that it happened to Monkey Island, something thatβs so dear to me.
-
Iβve said it before and Iβll say it again, the voice direction was the worst!! What did you think of it in MI2:SE? I recently looked at some footage of Bart and Fink and thereβs the generic pirate accents again. (βSo, who is this character that Iβm playing? Whatβs his backstory? What does he feel?β βHeβs a pirate! Just go AARRR!β) And then the singingβ¦ the singing!!! Itβs bad enough with Bart and Fink (99 bottles of beer on the wall is totally off, like they put the first take where the last one should be), but as if that wasnβt bad enough, they completely butchered the bone song! Where in the original, I could almost here the voices due to the perfect combination of music and text, the sung version in the SE is out of tune, out of rhythm and plain ugly! And donβt get me started on the voice of Largoβ¦ If I could make that second SE of those games (see last page), Iβd throw almost all the voices out (except main cast and a few exceptions) and rerecord them.

In the endβ¦ I gave up and just wrote FARTSβ¦ Thatβs the low, low level Iβve now sunk to, Remiβ¦ I want you to know that. Eep ook ack! I failed at #Mojole. π€π€πππ€ πππ€ππ€ π€ππ€π€π π€π€πππ π€ππ€π€π π€π€π€ππ€ https://funzone.mixnmojo.com/Mojole/

While on the topic of Thimbleweed Park (who was? I was!) and the MI:SEβs (who was? Zaxx was!), thatβs actually how Iβd like a remaster (or SE) of Monkey Island 1 and 2 to look and play. Use the original sprites and assets, but make them shine with modern shiny new polishy goodness. Add a global lighting system that lights the characters and objects. Make pixeled grass and other details sway in the foreground. Let the water flow with nice Mark Ferrari-ish pallette cycles! Make tiny pixelated moths circle the lights and those kinds of things. Let the soundtracks be remastered by Michael Land, Clint Bajakian and Peter McConnel, and add some more athmospheric sound effects here and there. Those things would be enough to make the game breathe, and make it seem a bit more alive, while still staying true to itβs roots. (Of course the whole thing should be voiced, but they could just use the current SEβs voice assetsβ¦ (or rerecord everything except the main parts with better casting and direction.))

Iβm sorry to hear that, Vainamoinen. I hope youβll find someone who can help with your eyes. I just had surgery last january to add extra lenses to mine, both my eyes were -7. Anyway, I hope things look up for you too! This is such a positive community, and I feel awful hearing that people feel down. β€οΈ Iβm currently watching a walkthrough of the first 60 minutes of Thimbleweed Park with Ron Gilbert, and Iβm falling completely in love with that game and his writing again! If RtMI is half as amusing, Iβm sold!
