THAT WAS F'N BULL****!!! It's just like how people believe that Tolkien illustrated Mordor (in the East) as the communists (Russia, in the East). Lord of the Rings is fictional!! Tolkien could've written it in any form of way and you can guarantee people will deliberately go SEARCHING for links between the modern world and Lord of the Rings.

"Being part of a European family that has lived on the North American continent for 400 years I've been lucky enough to gain perspective that when you create an evil character (Uruk-hai) that resembles native Americans as they have done in the Lord of the Rings films a great deal of cultural and racial alienation will occur. "

What a twit. I'm sure he's the only person that's made a connection between the Uruk-hai and native Americans. Nobody else even thought of that, but he's not a racist . I'm sure also, that native Americans everywhere are very appreciative of this nimrod championing their cause, right after saying he thinks they're monsters in a movie.

 I can't stand people that think they need to stand up for everyone when they weren't asked to in the first place. People need to quit trying to be so pc. Just shut up and watch the fookin' movie, and like it. Or don't. But ffs don't try to read so deeply into everything, and if you just HAVE to make $#!+ up to be offended by, for the love of humanity keep it to yourself, and don't write an article about it. There. I feel alot better. :D

This kind of stuff, when it surfaces, really angers me.

In fact, the rise of Nazism (and the battle against it) is one of the major issues that Lord of the Rings addresses. Tolkien's son fought in WW2, and it has been suggested by many a critic that JRR saw his son as a "Frodo" type figure - one man fighting against all the odds. Ultimately, good triumphs over evil - and that is one of many messages in LOTR. God knows where people get this racism thing from. It's just like the idiots who suggested that "The Two Towers" title should be changed, as "it was a clear attack on those who had lost family members on September 11th". It didn't seem to occur to these people that the book had been written well over 50 years prior to the attacks on the WTC, and that they were the "Twin Towers" anyway, and not "The Two Towers".

Some people will never learn.

I read the first few lines before figuring that it wasn't worth the time to read.

Tolkien historians make it clear in The Fellowship extended DVD that Tolkien hated allegory in all way, shape and form. Though he probably drew on his own life experiences to write his books, (The World Wars, interest in Norman/Anglo-Saxon culture and literature) he never consciously wrote anything in order to "represent" anything in real life. He simply felt that England had no great fantasy epic, so he wrote one, plain and simple.

You don't hear anything about discrimination against whites in LotR. You can't get much whiter than Saruman the White, yet you don't hear any whites complaining about him.

I think LotR does a marvelous job condemning racism. The hero of the story is a halfling, showing that no matter the size, bravery can be found in all. And who can forget

Eowyn slaying the Witch King and Arwyn's victory over the Nazgul in the river by Rivendell? That's real girl power there! :D

People really need to stop being so uptight about things. Do what George Lucas said and "get a life" and just enjoy the movies/books without trying to find excuses to boycot them. Heck, with the article's reasoning, you'd think even Star Wars was racist.

I can see it now:

[sARCASM]

"Lando betrays Han at Bespin and he has colored skin, so Star Wars MUST be racist! Tuskens are like Indians because the moisture farmers drove them off the land! And Hutts are fat! RACISM!!! RACISM!!!"

[/sARCASM]

Oh, and Jar-Jar was played by a black guy!

lol, some really funny stuff there Neverhoodian, although I don't think the sarcasm tags were really needed

oh, and I belive the politically correct version would be "And the Hutts are suffering from a severe case of obesity!" but fat works fine too

Welcome to the planet earth.

I bet this guy dosen't even know the book exists and is basing it off the movies. As if they were racist.

I dunno if this has already been said, but I read that some people had claimed EP1 was racist because Jar Jar was impersonating black people. Load of bull if you ask me.

Actually, he was aware, he even mentioned in his little rant that Peter Jackson should have changed things around to add 'colored heros' and he didn't think that J.R.R Tolkien would have minded.

That guys just plain stupid, that's all there is to say about him

Though perhaps not his intention, he offended particular groups/people in his essay, and at least because of this the flames are expected. I'm not trying to degrade Tolkien in any way, but the world does not know what exactly his mind and intentions were, but the evidence does point in the direction that what this essay is trying to prove is false.

I guess, the author of that article didn't read LOTR, this was all Tolkien's ideas, Jackson just put them on the screen...

True, but the descriptions of many races and groups in LOTR (Orcs, Haradrim) were largely in question because Tolkien didn't go into them very deeply in his writings. PJ had to make some of it up during his production of LOTR, despite all the resources he had. What I don't like about the article is that it puts the blame more upon Tolkien, which from his writings didn't even come up with much of the things about Middle-Earth PJ and his crew made them to be.

Um. The Uruk-hai resemble native Americans? News to me.

I'm so glad that the Dwarfs, Elves and Hobits finally got their due but unfortunately this was washed away by the lack of heroic images of people of skin color.

It's a freaking fantasy epic for England. Of course everyone resembles a white Englishman (after a fashion :p tee hee).

It looks like the guy just wrote it to stir up feelings anyways. Not very attention-worthy.
