Alegis
Source: Neowin (who's source is CNN When Gabe Newell, founder of Valve Software, confirmed last October that hackers had wormed their way into the developer's network and stolen the source code to "Half-Life 2," it sent shock waves through the gaming industry. "Half-Life 2," you see, wasn't just a title any gamer worth his or her salt was drooling over, it was the title industry insiders were counting on to help revive the struggling PC gaming business. As Valve developers gathered their wits, an executive from publisher Vivendi Universal Games told media outlets that the theft would delay the game until April 2004. That date was nothing more than a blind guess, though. Valve, the only company that really had a firm grasp on the impact of the theft, wrapped itself in a cocoon, refusing all questions from the media and not saying a word about when the game would hit shelves – until now. While still shying away from giving a firm date, Doug Lombardi, Valve's director of marketing, told me the company "is currently targeting this summer for the completion of Half-Life 2". heh..well we'll see if they can live up to that promise aye? i guess they do this because of losing interest

ExcelsioN
I heard about this from Gamespot. They'll be delaying it forever. At least it's not like Rome:Total War. That's been delayed for a whole year.

Datheus
Summer. ...OF THE YEAR 2525! *enter upbeat synth music* No, if Valve is smart, they'll release it this summer, no matter what the cost. If they delay again, it would probably mean total loss...

I've been out of the games loop for a while (yes, I've been living in a box in a box, shut up . Games are all but banned from my home...being 16 is BLAH! ). Cripes. What do you thinks they're doing with the source code (make a "home-made" Half-Life2?)
The_One
To be honest, the delays for HL2 have not been that bad. The average game is delayed for far longer than HL2 has been - look at Doom 3 as a prime example. The only difference with HL2 is that they worked the game up to that September 30th release date with extraordinary hype, and when it inevitably did not surface, the vast majority of people were surprised. If you are going to look at it from a realist's perspective, the delay isn't really a big deal. It's Valve/Vivendi's marketing department's fault for hyping the game up so much last Summer. Personally, I wouldn't expect the game until the Summer, at least. Since many people have now lost interest, a big plug at E3 will surely help Valve, and re-ignite hype for the game. A steady release of screenshots, movies etc. after that up until the release would make perfect sense.

Mike Windu
heh, I think that the makers of Half Life 2 should just release the stupid game already I want to look at the cover in the stores and have my friends tell me how good it is... I mean its not like the hackers are doing anything with the source code oh dear god they can mod the game now... but I could see why vivendi would stall the release of half life now halo 2 on the other hand... should not have been delayed... which is what I figured this thread was about:p jk
jokemaster
^they can use it to infect your computer with a virus.
Mike Windu
wow, I've never heard of a game source code infecting computers with a virus O.o that's kinda scary... ah well I'm sure it would still be ok if they just released it... I'm sure those hackers just wanted some information and they were too eager to get the game and couldn't wait... [/end run on]
jokemaster
Well, naybe not a virus, but they can hack your computer with it. I'd rather have a delay, than a virus or hack when I play MP.
Zappa_0
I hope they release this thing soon, im getting alittle tired of waiting for this game. Yea, I guess I can wait, but all those screenshots they put out awhile back look awesome. I loved the first game and cant want for the sequal to finally be released. Well I just i'll have to play JA and Max Payne 2 til then! And also a HL2 Demo would be great!
Tyrion
Little explanation on the source code. Source code is what games are run on. They include all of the variables, all of the different commands. They carry the physics system, the damage system, virtually everything. They have two forms, a programmable friendly version and a binary-only version. The first can be used by developers easily to create the game(uses english, usually in C++). However, before the game is shipped out, the game is transformed into a non-reversable binary version. The computer can still read and use it, but trying to change it with human abilities is nigh improbable unless you're neo. The hackers stole the programming version, and thus could do a large variety of things that would make multiplayer extremely aggrivating, and almost impossible on public servers. Gabrobot
Yeah, the source code is pretty important and stuff, but it ('it' being the particular code that could be taken advantage of) really isn't so big that it would take nearly a year to fix. From what I've heard, the game was nowhere near complete, and the source code theft is just something they're putting the whole blame on to try to direct the attention elsewhere... Pie™
Are you kidding whats not interesting about it? No I'm not kidding... It's just that the first game didnt appeal that much to me... Also, with all the hype, this game couldn't possible be as good as people expect, no matter how good it is, people is gonna expect better... Thats only my opinion of course
