I haven't made a thread for hundreds of years so I thought I should start one.

What's your favourite/ least favourite war movies. Here's mine-

(Note: Wartime movies like Schindler's List or The Pianist don't count. Neither does sci-fi or fantasy stuff like Star Wars or Lord Of The Rings)

Favourite:

Saving Private Ryan

Braveheart

Last Samuria

Last of the Mohicans

Forrest Gump (the bit in 'Nam)

Good War movies:

Platoon

Apocalypse Now

Glory

A Bridge Too Far

Black Hawk Down

Master And Commander

Rules of Engagement

We Were Soldiers

Three Kings

OK/Average War movies;

The Patriot (too simplistic and overly patriotic, but has it's good points)

Enemy At The Gates (I couldn't sympathise with the characters)

Crap War Movies:

Pearl Harbor (Boring and sanitized)

Lawrence of Arabia (I can see why some consider it a classic, and I enjoyed the music and desert scenery, but I found it boring)

The Thin Red Line (starts of all right, but become more an more boring)

There are some more but I can't think of them now.

#1 - Band of Brothers (not a movie but a mini-series... but still perhaps the best I have come across since it is all based on real life soldiers and events. Very realistic.)

Platoon

Where Eagles Dare

Three Kings

The Dirty Dozen

The Great Escape

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (the bridge sequence)

I liked The Thin Red Line

best war movie IMO: THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN - superbly researched and brilliantly filmed featuring some of the best names in the history of cinema.

war movies i like (in no particular order):

The Great Escape

Saving Private Ryan

All The Kings Men

All Quiet On The Western Front

Enemy at The Gates

Master And Commander

Good Morning Vietnam

war movie i hate: PEARL HARBOR - a disgrace of a film its various errors too numerous to list. and the bits featuring the British RAF are a slap in the face to those who prevented a nazi invaison of the United Kingdom

war movies i do not like:

The Patriot

Three Kings

Last Samurai

The Thin Red Line

These are my favorite types of movies. As for favorites, I'll agree with ed that Band of Brothers was great. I also like Black Hawk Down alot. Full Metal Jacket...man I could type all day about all the war movies I like.

As for everyones contempt for Pearl Harbor, I won't say it qualifies as one of favorite war movies. But what people fail to realize its that it was a friggin' movie. Everyone got all pissed that it wasn't historically accurate. Why? It wasn't a documentary. It was a Hollywood popcorn movie.

Damned right! The movie as a whole was a great commentary on the Civil War.

Anyway, favourite war movies would have to include:

Where Eagles Dare

Kelly's Heroes

Battle Of The Bulge

Apocalypse Now

Das Boot

Cross Of Iron

A Bridge Too Far

Ice Cold in Alex

Braveheart

The Longest Day

Saving Private Ryan

Seven Samurai (if one person can include it, so can I :p )

I also liked

The Deerhunter

The Dam Busters

The Guns Of Navarone

We Were Soldiers

Platoon

Full Metal Jacket

The Wild Geese

Last Of The Mohicans

The Patriot

Five Graves To Cairo

Dirty War

The Hill

Rules Of Engagement

The Great Escape (seen it too many times now)

The Dirty Dozen

The Bridge On The River Kwai

The Last Samurai

The Battle Of Britain

Zeppelin

Zulu

Gallipoli

55 Days In Peking

From Here to Eternity

Master And Commander (though I'm not sure it really qualifies as a War movie)

I've never seen:

Enemy At The Gates

Stalingrad

The Thin Red Line

Blackhawk Down

Pearl Harbour

Glory

Three Kings

There are undoubtedly others that I can't remember right now.

it was bad is a major contributer, and the real icing on the cake was that as ive said above, it was disrespectful to people i owe my freedom to.

I only like one War movie really, ive seen only a few and this is the one I like...

Saving Private Ryan (my middle name is Ryan)

It has great realistic images, great storyline, and blood, guts, and gore. Plus it has the best starting opening battle ive ever seen since "Gangs Of New York". It also has real great War strategies and numerous battles.

I give it a 10/10!

It was disrespectful to Americans? How? j/k.

I guess I didn't notice the "disrespectful" part. Other than the RAF was hardly in it...I'm not too big on the movie more for its length and all the romance crap. But I can't believe nobody thought the part with the Japanese bombing the harbor was cool. Great effects, visual and sound.

the bit where the "british" pilot comes up to the guy and says "if you all fly like that god help anyone who goes to war with america" like this guys presence is the sole reason for Britain remaining in the fight.

Yeah, pearl harbor was a huge cheese fest. Not exactly the best setting for a crummy love triangle ala "Titanic" since it's in a war and not on a boat I guess. I have to say though, that it had/has the absolute best, most intense air to air fight scenes in any movie I have ever seen. For that, I give it a 5/10.

Best war movies, in order:

Braveheart (what else needs said about it)

The Last Samauri (squeezed a good believable love story into a fantastic plot with characters that you can't help but sympathise with. Amazing action sequences too.)

Saving Private Ryan (true war movie that shows the grit and blood and sacrifice of the men and women who fought for the freedom and safety of not just America, but the world as well.)

Band of Brothers. (see above)

Not a huge war movie buff, so can't really think of really bad ones I have seen. (other than Pearl Harbor.)
