Reclaimer Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 Do you think online petitions are good or bad? I think the are a bad way of getting something or something done. Like anyone reads them or even pays attention to them.
Achilles Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 I'm all about 1st Ammendment rights, but I think online petitions can be a big waste of time. The ones that are legit and should be examples of why online petitions should be a good thing are frequently peppered with childish comments posted by people with opposing view points. All the rest seem to fall into a category that could be labelled "are you sure you don't have anything else to do with your time?".
Emperor Devon Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Neither. Online petitions have almost no power to influence anything, and show that the starter of it wants something done, but is too lazy to do it in real life. If you're serious about a petition, go make a real one. It'll get much better results.
Det. Bart Lasiter Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I loved the one some lazy soccer mom set up to try and ban Maddox (http://maddox.xmission.net) though. It was so useless and futile I signed it myself.
stingerhs Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 the problem with online petitions is that there isn't really a way to confirm nor deny a person's "signature". although you might sign it once, there might be others that sign it 50+ times. a physical petition is quite different in that each person's signature can be (in some way or another) verified for accuracy which limits duplicates. the problem with that method is exposure. unless you have a large group of people that are willing to raise awareness of the issue and seek the necessary signatures, they tend to have little success outside of small communities. i'm definately not against petitions, but i do think that they have too many limitations for reasons stated above.
Samnmax221 Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 A hard signature is so much more vaible, just not as likely of being signed
The Source Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 From a psychological stand point, I believe that online petitions are only useful as a stress releiver. Hehehe... Instead of people complaining, maybe they need to vent out externally. Since the online petitions have no bearing on anything, maybe the act in itself makes people feel fulfilled in some manner. I prefer to by one of those stress balls. Hehehe... I wonder if anyone truely takes them seriously. If outsiders made a petition about something I created, and their intent is to get me to remove it from veiwing, I would blow off a online petition. ***Sigmund Freud Enters the Room*** So, what do you think Sigmund? The S-Man: I believe online petitions are to cover up a complex, which has occured beyond the Latency Stage of childhood development. Hehehe... Just adding some pathetic attempt at humor.
Alkonium Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I loved the one some lazy soccer mom set up to try and ban Maddox (http://maddox.xmission.net) though. It was so useless and futile I signed it myself. Ban him from what? That's another problem with these petitions: too vague.
Commander Obi-Wan Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I loved the one some lazy soccer mom set up to try and ban Maddox (http://maddox.xmission.net) though. It was so useless and futile I signed it myself. lol. Just read that. Meh? I could care less if they have them or not.
Det. Bart Lasiter Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Ban him from what? That's another problem with these petitions: too vague. Perhaps *I* should have clarified the issue: ban his site from being shown on the internet.
RaV™ Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Waste of time for Online petitions. There is no proof of your signature, so to me it's garbage.
Samnmax221 Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I beleive her name was Chairman Bitch, she later tried a Chinese tequnique and attempted to run down Maddox with her minivan
Det. Bart Lasiter Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I believe her site was http://www.DDOSd_to_death.net
Sabretooth Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Petition Power: Can convince a two-cred worker to quit. Online Petition Power: Can convince e-mail handler to quit. Armed Protest Power: Can convince the whole system to quit. Pun Power: Can kill.
Reclaimer Posted March 31, 2006 Author Posted March 31, 2006 I beleive her name was Chairman Bitch, she later tried a Chinese tequnique and attempted to run down Maddox with her minivan OMG!! lol Back on topic...I feel more and more online petitions are also getting stupid like, "Get George Lucas to make Episodes 7 - 25" <---That will never happen (at least by Lucas)
Astrotoy7 Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I loved the one some lazy soccer mom set up to try and ban Maddox (http://maddox.xmission.net) though. It was so useless and futile I signed it myself. mmmm......soccer moms online petitions come in varouis forms. Some international agencies have member registers, which vote on actions to be presented. That isnt as bad. But as a general rule, online petitions are mis-representative and are often a means for scammers to get names to sell to mailing lists. mtfbwya
Prime Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Online petitions are the most useless things on the Internet, or anywhere else for that matter...
